New iPhone and iPod Touch Models Show Up in Apple’s Inventory

By , Sep 28, 2011

We are still trying to piece together some sort of picture of what Apple will be unveiling next week. The Cupertino company has done a pretty good job so far of keeping its Fall plans a secret. The stuff we think we know at this point is only based on speculation.

9to5Mac added some more pieces to the puzzle this morning by reporting that 5 new products have turned up in Apple’s inventory. The first three devices appear to be new iPod touches, and the other two? Well, the other two are new iPhone models…

The new iPod touches show up in Apple’s system with the product SKU N81A. For those who don’t know, SKUs are short codes used in large inventory systems to quickly identify merchandise. And as 9to5Mac points out, the code matches up with previous models.

“Three new iPod touch models have appeared in the system with the codename n81A. N81 is the codename for the fourth-generation black iPod touch, so the A likely represents the string of the three new white models. Since there are only three new models  – at this time – it’s likely that the black models won’t be updated.”

We’ve seen evidence that a white iPod touch exists. Last month we saw a white faceplate surface for Apple’s popular media player. And if you think about it, it almost makes sense for Apple to leave the black model alone. Nobody has a white iPod touch. (Unless you buy a conversion kit, of course.)

Now, for the new iPhones:

“Even more interesting are the two new iPhone SKUs that have showed up in the system. The catch is that these two SKUs are actually marked as tweaked iPhone 4s. The new device’s codename is N90A and this represents very minor changes from the iPhone 4 — which is the N90. In fact, this may be an iPhone 4 — an 8GB version as previously rumored.”

Great. So now we have the N94 device that was discovered in iOS months ago, hundreds of mysterious cases that appear to be based on a completely redesigned iPhone, and these N90A handsets. Yeah, October 4th can’t come soon enough.

Apple fan will be disappointed if the announcement on 10/4 is the availability of the stripped down version of iPhone 4

  • Timmy Tim Tim Cook

    HA not first!

    • Burge

      Look at the name..

.ive said from the start that there will be a striped down iPhone 4 ..the 8 gig. That’s apples way of going for the cheaper market..strip down the last model and make it cheaper…there is only one new device coming out the other is this 8 gig iPhone which in away is a new device

      • James

They don’t need to strip it down, they could release the iPhone 4 as is at a vastly reduced price and still make profit but like everything Apple, it has a hugely inflated price tag … They say you pay for what you get and that may be true but you also pay what Apple tell you to pay.

I can’t afford to change a new model iPhone every year :(

    • Imy0UrdaDDy

Why can’t you afford, be smart about it. Last year I sold my iPhone 3GS & 3G before that. Both for 150.00 a piece bucks to a friend. He was on T-Mobile Jailbroke & Unlocked it for him. All he did was put in his Sim Card & he was done. I bought my iPhone 4 that same day only having to put 50.00 of my own money. Keep your devices clean & protected than resell them, either to a store, online, or friend. I plan on do the same for the iPhone 5.

If you go and buy it directly from an Apple or AT&T Store, of course you can’t. Buy it from other third party suppliers. This year I had both the 3G and 3GS (+ iPod Touch 3G) for less than $400 = a new iPhone 4.

You just gotta know where and WHEN to buy it. You won’t always be able to keep up with Apple, but YOU WILL eventually get what you want.

For example, the iPhone 4 on Christmas 2011 would be a GREAT choice. Whether it’s used or new, I assure you you will still love the phone.

WTF is up with these double posts?

  • RG

what a whole lot of bull and speculation.. wait til 10/4 !!

What now its going to be 10th April ?!! Lol

      • DrunkenTramp

He’s just written it the British (correct) way round. dd/mm/yyyy is more logical than mm/dd/yyyy

Frankly I’m just waiting for the thing to be revealed. If it’s just a cheaper iPhone 4 I’m not getting it, simple as that. With dual-core 1.5 GHz being the norm for high-end phones, Apple might be behind with a dual-core 1GHz processor, let alone a single-core.

    • Josh

I have just ONE question. When you use a phone, DO YOU ACTUALLY THINK: “Oh, I’m texting from my Android dual-core 1.5GHz processor phone”.

I DONT THINK SO. Maybe that attracted customers in the past, but now all they want is SIMPLICITY (this is not opposed to freedom with your device). And that is exactly what Apple is doing.

      • kurt

just because you love apple doesn’t mean you have to manipulate your thinking into saying, superior specs is bad. i bet you are the same person who would say not have flash is a positive. you can’t get to every site. and if you dont like flash being on as default you can click on them to make them active, as is the case with webOS.

if you love apple, fine. but dont give us garbage that it’s better to have a slower phone and start talking about simplicity. stupid stupid stupid

  • Frank

    SKU = Stock keeping unit

  • Scaredy Shroom

I HIGHLY doubt Apple would wait this long just to disappoint. It’s run by a whole bunch of people who are much more qualified and intelligent than any of us, so I wouldn’t make silly assumptions.

    • James

You just contradicted yourself twice there:

      1) Making assumptions about the readers of this blogs intelligence.

      2) Making “silly assumptions”, check my point 1.

With regards to the phone, i’m quite happy to wait as my contract isn’t up for renewal until March and I certainly won’t be rushing out to buy a new 1 like some fanboy .. When my contract expires I will get the best phone out and that certainly won’t be the iPhone as iPhones only reign supreme for 1 or 2 months tops.

U think! Is dat why dey hired Jailbreakers coz they can’t seemed to have d same brain & freedom of creativity dat dey have to copy it from cydia tweaks!!! Get real!
Btw, lots of iPhone 5/4S r popping out for sale! Seems like its almost d same as iphone4, just some copied tweaks from cydia that has been out in jailbreak community, sorry but it doesn’t really excite me to spend more than wat I already have :)

  • fdxgncgfn

It will probBLY BE A BIG difference because of the delay

    • kurt

it better be. or they will suffer from bad publicity. their OS is already boring to so many people. i used to absoutly love iOS. i had it since iPhone OS 1.1.4 so i’m in the need of something new. and webOS is awesome! i love it.

  • Augusto

Well, you don’t need to have EVERY new model of iphone. New versions of everything come all the time. You may have a 3G iphone and then the iphone 5. Or first the iphone 4 which will worlk flawlessly a couple of years to come. You can upgrade to iphone 6 or 7. Don’t sweat it, you may upgrade phone every 2 or 3 years if you want; you’ll still have nice functionality. The more versions you skip, the sweeter the upgrade! Just sayin’

    • gabe

I so agree with you :)

Eyephone implanted in your eye? Like in futurama…anybody else watch that? I thought it was funny.
