How to Get Back on AT&T’s Unlimited Data Plan

By , Jun 28, 2011

AT&T no longer offers its new or existing customer’s unlimited data. This is unfortunate, but not permanent. This method will allow you to have unlimited data for use with any phone on any account on the AT&T Wireless network.

This guide is the culmination of several people’s struggles in getting AT&T to give them back something they deserve. Originally posted back in October and updated a little while after, we’re back to give it to you again! This time with an easier to follow guide!

The following is a guest post by my good Twitter friend Mathew Rice.

Prerequisites

  • One first generation iPhone (aka iPhone 2G)
  • One unactivated or valid (working) microSIM card or Standard SIM card (deactivated SIM cards will not work)
  • Free time to deal with potential issues that may arise (resolutions detailed below article)

The Process

The first thing you need to do is obtain a First Generation iPhone, commonly known as the iPhone 2G and how we will refer to it from here on out.
Once you’ve obtained an iPhone 2G, you’ll want to give it a full restore in iTunes. You can do this with your SIM card installed or without. You’ll have to put your SIM card in later anyways, so if you don’t need to use your actual phone while the process completes, then install your SIM and save yourself a step later.

Once the restore has completed, iTunes will bring you to the phone activation screen (assuming your SIM card is installed, if it’s not, disconnect your iPhone, insert the SIM card and reconnect your iPhone). Fill in the required account info and proceed. Whatever options you choose during activation won’t really matter as certain account features you already have will override, like unlimited family messaging and the likes. As well, the great part about this portion of the process is that Unlimited data is non-optional :p – At the end of the activation process, iTunes should tell you something like, “You’ll receive an email when your activation is complete”. Once you’ve got the email, all is well and you now have an Unlimited Data plan.

You can verify this many ways like dialing *DATA# from your phone. You’ll then receive a text message with details about your data plan where it will indicate you have unlimited data. You can also log-in to your AT&T account online and go to the features portion of your account to see unlimited data for whichever phone line you used during activation.

Read on for info on known issues and for answers to frequently asked questions.

Known Issues

If the iPhone 2G you are using is still assigned to another AT&T account, activation might not complete, you might not receive the activation complete email and after a long wait, you will get an, “unable to complete activation email”. This is the most common reason for failed activations. If you know the account assignment status of the iPhone 2G, make sure you replace the iPhone 2G on that account with another phone first. This means AT&T has to have the replacement phone on-file for the account that once had the iPhone 2G you are using.

Resolution – You’ll need to call AT&T and have them manually activate the phone for you. It helps to tell them you were trying to activate your unlimited data iPhone plan through iTunes with your iPhone. As well, you can go to any company owned AT&T store and they can get you setup as well. Make sure to bring the iPhone 2G with you and that you are or have with you, the primary account holder.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What if I am on a Family Plan?
Answer: The process is the same, just make sure you are or know the account info of the primary account holder

What if I am on an Employee Plan?
Answer: The process is the same, just make sure you are or know the account info of the primary account holder

My microSIM card does not fit in this iPhone 2G!
Answer: That’s right; you’ll need to get a microSIM adapter or a Standard SIM card. You can get the latter from any company owned AT&T store. They can also take care of the whole process for you too. So if you go that route, have them set you up. Make sure to bring the iPhone 2G with you.

I got a text message from AT&T telling me they switched my data plan!
Answer: This is normal, if you place your SIM card into an AT&T known smartphone like an iPhone 3G or newer, AT&T will automatically switch you to the $30 unlimited data plan. This is because the iTunes quoted $20 unlimited data plan is only qualified for iPhone 2G devices. No worries though, you still have unlimited data! Go on, check, dial *DATA# :p

Your Guide Sucks, it didn’t work for me!
Answer: This guide is for reference only. There are no guarantees nor where there any given. However, are you sure you followed all the steps and read carefully? Are you or do you have the primary account holders info? Make sure you are or do! You can also check out the original article and sift through the comments to see if anyone else has had a similar issue like yours.

    Hello everyone,
I just wanted to let you all know that things are backed up a little bit. I am happy to have the business but I didn’t think I would be getting 5-10 (sometimes more!) activation requests per day. As such I can’t promise instant activation as I once did. part of it is also that ATT isn’t always instant (have had to wait as long as 48 hours for things to go through). I have multiple 2G iPhones that I run these with but can still get overwhelmed at times.

Anyway, just wanted to give everyone a heads up. Trying to stock up on more units to serve my customers more!

    • psywzrd

What do people do about having a phone to use when it takes 48 hours for the phone to activate? I want to do this for a friend (I have a 2G to use and he currently has an iphone 4s that is activated). If I try to activate the 2g on his account with a new sim, his 4s will be useless until the 2g is activated with the new sim (and the unlimited plan) and I can give him that new sim. Is there any way around this? I only have one 2g and I’d like to be able to do this for him and other people as well but if it’s going to take 48 hours to activate the 2g with the new sim, I don’t think people are going to be very happy waiting for the activation process to go through.

      • stamp2k1

It was done on my phone 2 days ago and the entire process took 15 minutes and that included me calling AT&T to activate my new sim card because I had lordofthereef do it for me on eBay and I didn’t want to wait for him to mail me the sim he used.

      • Bela

It’s a crap shoot. Sometimes an AT&T generates an email along the lines of “you activation is processing”. Other times you (the contract holder) will be required to call AT&T up to “push” the activation. In this scenario they also may require going to an AT&T store and showing ID. Lastly, it may be instant. Truly is tough to say.

  • Enrique

No Fabiola, it won’t mess it up. I went from an LG Shine to a Samsung Galaxy S2 and my unlimited plan stayed.

  • stamp2k1

Just an update on lordofthereef…… He was right on the money with his communication. He was backed up and filled me in on when he could get to me and came through flawless….. On a side note, I didn’t want to wait for him to mail me his updated Sim Card so I had an Unregistered one waiting that I got on eBay for $1.39 incl shipping. Once he did his thing and updated my account info I could see it immediately on my AT&T account, I called AT&T and told them I needed to activate a sim card for my iPhone and no questions asked they activated it immediately. It literally took 15 minutes and the iPhone is up and running with unlimited data….. So excited.

    • stamp2k1

“thegizmotrader” is the name of the seller that is selling those unregistered AT&T sim cards….

Someone pleaseeee Help meeee, I had already jailbroken my phone but I restored it and now I need to activate it with a new sim card but when I plug in my iphone 2 into itunes it recognizes the phone but no “lets get started screen” is there, but only a screen that says iPhone on it… PLEASE HELP

    Hi,
I have an iphone 4S. Can I use a micro sim adapter to activate the iphone 2G with that sim or I really have to get a new sim ?

  • Eric

Why can’t I view the older comments. I am trying to find Manny’s contact information, I have been following this blog for a while and was able to do the hack with a 2g iPhone back in February, but since then i sold my 2g.. Just wondering if Manny is still around. I got some business for him if he is.

    • stamp2k1

Look just below this post and to the left or it is also located at the top of the page in small blue letter it says “older posts” with a little blue arrow. You might have to click back a few pages to find the posts you are looking for but you should be able to go all the way back to the first page of posts….

    • stamp2k1

Sorry it says “older comments” not older posts.

  • AllstarE4

    Sal,
It will only work with a new sim card. If you try it with a currently active sim card the system will override it and put you on the limited data plan and you’re stuck back at square one.

  • Andy

    AllstarE4

Is there another way to do this if you just activated an iPhone 4S to get the unlimited Data Plan?

    • stamp2k1

@Andy….. In order to do this you have to eliminate your existing DATA plan. For that to happen, you have to put your Sim Card into a phone that does not require a Data Plan aka. a Dumb Phone. But because the iPhone 4s uses a Micro Sim you should get an adapter that allows it to fit into the Dumb Phone. When you switch your Sim to a DUMB PHONE, you can go into your AT&T account and eliminate your data plan. Once you don’t have the DATA Plan, then you can put your Sim into the iPhone 2g and activate it through iTunes (You might have to use an earlier version like 9.0) with your AT&T account information. In iTunes it allows you to select the $20/Month Unlimited Data plan because it detects the iPhone 2g. After you get your account info set up you can take your Sim Card and put it into your iPhone 4s……. You will need the original iPhone to do this though. If you don’t have one it might be easier to get an UNREGISTERED MICRO SIM CARD and have lordofthereef on eBay do it for you. He did it for me and it took no more than 15 minutes. If you have any questions, just ask. He was professional throughout the entire process…… Good Luck.

  • AllstarE4

There is no other way to do it. The process is the same no matter what phone you want to use in the end. You have to temporarily use a dumb phone, take off data plan, then do the iphone 2G trick. Once those steps are done you put that new sim in the iphone 4S and you’re good to go.

  • lordofthereef

    Just a quick note guys,

I am all caught up so delays, if any, should be MUCH shorter, so take a look at my eBay page! ;)

Thanks again for all the kind words and references. Keep enjoying that unlimited data!

  • lordofthereef

I also just quickly wanted to add a few notes, since some buyers tend to get eager, worried (or I like to say plain impatient).

This is not my sole means of income. I am a student and I also work 30 hours a week. If I don’t get to working on your account the instant you pay, PLEASE BE PATIENT. Just like you, I have a life.

If you want up-to-the-minute updates on your account, just log in at att.com and check if the data plan is on the line(s) in question. If not, it’s still processing. No need to ask me. When I have 10+ activations pending, it is a lot easier to have each buyer check THEIR OWN status than me keep checking for them. (Hint: I am notified when things are complete, so you will get a message from me when they are done as well).

I provide a google voice TEXTING number as a courtesy to my buyers. Messages are forwarded to my mobile and I try and respond as quickly as possible (generally instantly unless you are texting me at some ungodly hour – which some people have around 3am). I am unable to take voice calls. I do not have the time. It’s as simple as that.

If you are worried about being without a phone for any amount of time, go grab a $10 gophone from Best Buy. It’s a Samsung flip phone, and it really is a good option. I will not be able to expedite your order simply because “you need the phone for business” or any other reasons. If you need it that bad, pay the extra $10 for the phone. Unless I get a massive number of orders, I am generally able to get you taken care of the same day. Please also be aware that sometimes ATT call centers, servers, etc. undergo maintenance and can be down for some period of time.

If there are any questions, reach me through TEXT at my google voice (515) nine8one sixty-eight twenty-six or message me through eBay (seller lordofthereef).

  • WHyWontItWork

Okay, I went to AT&T store, opened a line without contract (just voice service). I have an iPhone 2G, inserted new Sim Card, plugged it into iTunes 9.0 and went through the activation. The last step where iTunes was communicating with AT&T, there was an error and it said something about No Network Connection and now iTunes just says iPhone when the phone is plugged in. AT&T says it’s activated but the phone still asking me to plug it into iTunes. When I do it says “We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection timed out…” Can someone help me?

    • Maria Romano

I could have written this post because the SAME thing just happened to me!

Trying to google some answers…. If anyone knows of anything I could try, please post…

      • Bela

Are you guys actually wanting to use the 2G? I had someone ask me about this. If so, just “hacktivate” it (google it, easier than explaining here). If not, and the data plan is on your account, there really is no reason to even worry about it. It seems like iTunes isn’t activating the phones, but if they are activating the data that is the only step that really matters (in my eyes anyway)

      • WHyWontItWork

I went to Apple store today and they told me that the iPhone 2g can’t be activated FOR USE over itunes, but instead, they have to take all the phones information and send it to corporate and corporate will activate the phone in 48 hour of submitting the phones information. I asked them will it be activated over the air or plugging into iTunes. The LEAD GENIUS told me he didn’t know. He just knows corporate activates the phones.

I have been reading this for a few days. I cannot get this to work. I have put itunes 9.0, 10.5 and 10.3 on my pc.I’m currently on 9. The iphone was jailbroken so I restored immediately. When I put in an unactivated sim card (or mine) it goes straight to the screen on the iphone to unlock. It doesn’t ask me to go through the iphone att set up process. I have tried on 2 computers and I can’t seem to get it. It asks if I want to sync, but nothing about setting it up on Att. Could this be because it is unlocked? I have done a DFU restore and a regular restore at least 15 times each. Just want this to work haha. Thanks in advance.

  • LORDOFTHEREEF

Another word on respect here guys,
I provided my number for those who wish to buy my service, not as a 24/7 help line. I am happy to answer questions when I am browsing forums here, but I am not going to be open for questions about how to do this yourself 24/7. I had been answering these hoping they wouldn’t be frequent, but this morning I got my 5th person in two days just asking me to walk them through this. I am simply going to stop answering such inquiries.

I have an iphone 4s but I don’t have unlimited data right now. A friend with an iphone 2g is going to do this for me but I have a few questions. Once he does what he has to do, how do I get a new sim from att? If I just walk into an att store, will they just give me a new micro sim if I ask for it? Won’t they ask why I need it? If not, are they going to ask me to give them my 4s so that they can activate the micro sim with it? Unfortunately, my friend doesn’t live close to me so getting the sim card from him isn’t possible. Basically I want to know what I need to do on my end once my friend activates the 2g on my account. I know I need a new sim but I want to know how to get it from at&t and activate it properly so that I get unlimited data on my 4s. Thank you.

    • stamp2k1

You can buy an Un-activated sim card off of eBay first. You can buy a regular sim card from gizmotrader for $1.24 free shipping and cut it down to fit or you can pay a little extra and buy an Un-activated micro sim card from other sellers. Before your friend does anything, YOU need to take your activated sim card and put it into a phone that does not require a data plan and go into your account on AT&T and take off the DATA Plan, this way when your friend does his thing and enters your account info it doesn’t show an existing data plan. Once your friend does his thing and he’s able to change your account settings to the $20/month Unlimited data plan, you can call AT&T with your Un-Activated sim card and tell them you want to activate it for your phone. I did mine this way and it took a total of 15 mins. from start to finish and my phone was fully activated. I told them I scratched my sim removing it from my phone and they didn’t ask any questions.

      Any questions, just ask…..

  • trent

Well we didn’t do the part about taking off the data plan but my friend told me that he had no problem selecting the unlimited data plan when he tried to activate the 2g in itunes; however, now he’s stuck on a screen that says “”Please wait while AT&T is processing your activation. This make take up to 3 minutes.”

  • IphoneMama

I spent all weekend trying this: had 2g iPhone, downloaded iTunes 9, got a new sim card from AT&T and had NO LUCK! It kep telling me I had a problem with my “Network”!

Went to Apple Store; I stumped the Geniuses! They tried with a new sim card and had me go back to AT&T. You know…Pass the Buck!

AT&T tried two new sim cards, saw the $20/mo. data plan on my account. They said the problem was with iTunes not letting the last activation step go forward! Both AT&T salesmen told me I should Jailbreak it; check you-tube for easy instructions.

I’m thinking iTunes is blocking people from activating any new accounts for iPhone 2G. Very frustrating g!

  • lordofthereef

Let me clear a few things up.

    1. This can be used with the latest version of iTunes. No need to downgrade. I use the latest version just fine

    2. If the $20 unlimited data plan is on your account, it is irrelevant whether you get the iPhone 2G actually activated or not. The goal here is just to get the plan on your line. If you are planning on actually using the 2G you will have to “hactivate” it (use a Google search) as of this writing. Apple is no longer activating 2G phones for whatever reason (this may change again in the future, I cannot say)

    3. If you are getting a “blank iPhone” screen, this seems to be a problem with iTunes connectivity. Try rebooting your computer, unplugging and replugging your iPhone cable, or using a different computer if possible. It will eventually work.

For those who do not want to go through the trouble, I do offer this service via eBay at an affordable price.

  • trent

    @lordofthereef:

Do you have to hactivate the 2g in order to activate the phone in itunes and add the unlimited data plan? Or do you only have to go through the process in itunes until it gets to the Processing Activation screen? Like I mentioned, my friend got stuck at the activation screen and it just stayed there until it timed out and the unlimited plan was never added to my account. Is he missing a step somewhere or messing it up somehow?

    • lordofthereef

A “hacktivated” phone will not get you to the activations screen. It needs to be restored and in the “plug into itunes” screen. I am not sure what happened with your friend’s line, but something else went wrong.

    • lordofthereef

Perhaps a bad IMEI or some such problem?

  • psywzrd

    @trent @lordofthereef

I got stuck at the same point trying to do this. I restored the 2g before I started, inserted a brand-new unactivated sim and then went through the steps (entering all of the required info, selecting the unlimited plan, etc.). Everything went smoothly until that last screen where it tells you to wait 3 minutes or whatever. It eventually timed out with a message saying:

“We could not complete your iTunes store request. The network connection was lost. There was an error in the iTunes store. Please try again later.”

Could this have anything to do with the itunes account? If I’m doing this for someone else, is it ok to be signed into my own itunes account and have my email address as the one that receives the activation emails? That’s the only thing I haven’t really seen mentioned but I can’t imagine that I would need my friend’s apple id and password.

When I plug in the iPhone iTunes comes up with a blank page that simply says iPhone. Any ideas how to get to an activation page?

    • J. Burns

I don’t know if there’s a definitive way to get the activate screen to show. It is off and on for me. Sometimes I open iTunes and plug my phone in with it off and sometimes with the phone on. You may have to restart the program a few times or reboot you computer to get the activation screen. Keep trying different ways and you’ll get it. Good Luck!

I got an iPhone off ebay, called att with a dumb phone and had them remove my smartphone plan. I logged in to check and it was indeed gone. Next, I put my sim in the iPhone and activated it through iTunes. It didn’t activate at first, so I installed the whited00r custom rom and it was good to go. Again, I checked the att webpage and it said I now had the $20/unlimited plan. I then took the sim out of my iPhone and put it in my Captivate. I never got a text saying I was upgraded to the $30 plan, so I checked the website again and it says I now have the $20/unlimited iPhone plan AND the $25 2GB smartphone plan. What can I do to fix this and get the $30 plan? Please help!

  • Anonymous

I pretty much end up with the same thing, did you get a chance to call them and clear it up?

    • J. Burns

When you log into your AT&T account does it still show that you have the iPhone or does it show your dumb phone? If it still shows your iPhone you should be able to switch it by hitting the part that says “This is not my phone”. Maybe if you do that, then you can take off the data plan. If AT&T is asking for your IMIE number, I think they just want to verify that your sim is actually in a dumb phone. Just guessing though.

It seems to be working, but you’ll need to upgrade from the $20 unlimited to the $30 unlimited. AT&T will automatically do that for you if you don’t.

Prices have dropped some on eBay. Mention you found out about my service from here and receive an additional $5 off!

Is there anyway to tell if the 2g phone you have is activated or not before you start ?..and if so how do you deactivate it seems like if you know this it would take care of some of the problems. I’m going to be setting up 2 phones on unlimited so when I do the first phone and put the sim card in the 4g that should deactivatethe 2g again to set up number 2 phone ?

    • Anonymous

Whether it is activated or not is irrelevant. Just do a restore in iTunes. That way you will KNOW it is not longer activated by seeing the “plug into itunes” message.

Ok, I’ve been trying to get the $30 unlimited iphone plan on my account! Here’s the issue I can’t activate through itunes because my iphone 2g is broken, and won’t restore for the life of me. So, I called AT&T gave them imei number and they added the iPhone 2G to my account, but said they can’t manually add the data plan, and that I must go through iTunes. Every single representative, including the supervisors, keep telling me either they don’t offer the plan, they can’t add it on manually, or the only way to add it is through iTunes, I don’t know what to do. So far all I have is the iphone 2g on one of my lines without a data plan..

I always make note that original unlimited iphone data plan is the only plan that can be used for the original iphone because its a EDGE iphone, and some keeping saying that the other data packages 200mb, 2g, work with the phone.

I don’t know what to do at this point….

I successfully was switched from the $20 to the $30 plan the other day.

When I check my account on my iphone, my current data plan states “Data Unlimited for iphone” then selecting I get this, “Data Plan for Iphone, Automatically added for customers using iPhone without required plan.

I have the option of actually selecting an official $30 plan. Should I do it and select the official $30 plan, or should I just leave it alone as is and it will change on its own when my billing cycle starts over in a couple of weeks?

    lordofthereef,
Do you know when your ebay iPhone unlimited plan will be available again on ebay?

I do not know if/when ATT issues get resolved. Currently I am being told by ATT reps that “problems” should be resolved within 48 hours. Whether this is a legitimate outage or ATT closing the loophole, I literally have no way to know without letting some time pass.

I’ve never had a data plan with Att and currently have a family plan with 3 phones so I have some questions:

    1. If I do this will it force me into a contract with ATT?
    2. Will I be able to upgrade to a new smart phone other than an Iphone?

I was planning on getting a new smartphone with a data plan but want the unlimited should I order the new phone first then do this or do this then order the new phone with ATT to get the discounted rate?

      1. No
      2. Yes

This is IF ATT brings back activations. They have been down since the morning of 12/13/11

So right now I should hold off on trying this until we know if ATT has allowed activations again and it works? I haven’t been able to find an Iphone in my area either and I know most people want your entire account info to get you unlimited data which I’m not too comfortable giving.

Yes. Buy a phone on eBay. Problem solved. :)

Ebay wants like $135 for the phones but there are some for $50 but they say they don’t work for sending/recieving calls or texts. Does the phone actually have to be fully functional like that or just be able to connect to Itunes to get the unlimited data option?

does this process still work? i hope so. thanks guys!

lordofthereef reported that activations are down I dunno if that is activations through itunes or what. I was wondering the same thing if he was basically saying it’s been shutdown for now. Maybe it was maintanence? I hope it doesn’t effect the loophole.

Still no update if this loophole is still working or not?

    • Anonymous

Currently it is not. As I said, when it’s back, I WILL UPDATE here. If you see no updates, that means it’s not back yet. ATT reps still giving me the run around so I have no confirmation whether or not this is 100% officially closed or not.

Dang I found this too late…. I am already grandfathered in on the unlimited but I converted to a family plan and added a line to give my brother a phone for X-mas, was trying to figure a way to get him unlimited plan as well. As I left iPhone for the new S2 skyrocket.
