Buy More Tones. That’s an order. At least that’s what Apple’s saying in iOS 4.3 GM.

I’ve always despised the fact that people continue to buy ringtones via iTunes, keeping it relevant. It’s so easy to make them yourself, why would anyone pay a dollar to download a snippet of a song they most likely already own?

Personal bias aside, there’s no doubt that ringtones are a big money maker these days, though it must not be bringing in enough coin to satisfy Apple — going by the verbiage contained in iOS 4.3 GM…

That’s right, in the ringtone portion of the sounds section in the iPhone’s Settings.app, the following three words are stated at the top of the page; Buy More Tones.

Tapping the button unsurprisingly takes you to the ringtones section of the iTunes store. Once there, you can purchase the snippets of songs you already own.

With apps like Ringtone Maker available for free on the App Store, who really needs this?

People should check the app store and type in “ringtones”. You could get an app that lets you make your own ringers for text and phone calls.

^^^very true @Manuel…or jus go on a site such as myxer.com and cut what part of the song you want, save it as m4r and play through itunes>sync>enjoy..

  • SillyBear

Or jailbreak and do whatever you want with any tones on the phone.

  • Jlowry

While there are easier ways to make your own I think this is a good idea for basic users. Rather than having to close settings > open iTunes and search, they provide a link to go directly to ringtones.

  • Lupin

Its easy to make your own ringtones just use the file extension m4r but what extension do you need for text tones? I will feel pretty dumb if it’s as simple as m4t

  • KiraXD

uh yeah.. i suggest jailbreak + anyring… theres nothing, NOTHING better.

  • mohgui

this feature are for those who are pretty lazy to create their own ringtones.

  • Ben

I also would like to know how to create text tones.

  • manuel

For those of you who want text message ringtones, you have to know something. When you make one, the longest a text tone can be is up to 3 seconds. To make one, just make a sound that’s around 1 – 3 seconds and name it

sms-received1.caf the caf part is what type of file it’s going to be.

Then put it into the system/library/Audio/UISounds and drop it in there. Than go to text messages and click the first one and it should work. You can also change a lot of other stuff there as well.

Just another way for Apple to nickle and dime us.

  • Fascinating blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere? A design like yours with a few simple tweeks would really make my blog stand out. Please let me know where you got your design. Many thanks
