Those of you on a 3.0 or 3.0.1 jailbroken iPhone who were anticipating the iPhone MMS release last week might have been disappointed by the fact that you have to be on the latest 3.1 firmware to download and install the carrier update. Rejoice because there is a simple hack that will allow you to have MMS on your iPhone.

1. First, download the AT&T Profile .IPCC 5.5.

2. Make sure iTunes is closed and run one of these commands, depending on your operating system:

On Windows: Note that it took me a few minutes to get this to work… It seems I was always typing something wrong.

  • Windows XP: Go to “Start”, click on “Run” and type “cmd” then hit Enter. Now type the following: cd C:\Program Files\iTunes\ and hit ENTER then type iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 and hit ENTER
  • Windows Vista: Go to “Start” and type “Command Prompt” in search and then hit ENTER. Now type the following: cd C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\ and hit ENTER then type: iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 and hit ENTER

On Mac OS X:

Open Terminal by going to Applications > Utilities. Type the following: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE and hit ENTER.

3. Launch iTunes and plug your iPhone. PC users should hold the SHIFT key on their keyboard (Mac users should hold the ALT key) and click on CHECK FOR UPDATE, while still holding the SHIFT or ALT key. A windows will pop up.

4. Navigate to the .IPCC file we downloaded in step 1.

5. It will update your iPhone, which should take just a few seconds.

6. Unplug your iPhone and reboot it.

7. You should now have MMS enabled.

Some people report loss of cellular data network and loss of visual voicemail. I haven’t experienced any of that but if you do, here is how to fix it.

Go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network to update your configuration.

  • Visual Voicemail change wap.cingular to acds.voicemail
  • MMS settings should match the following (leave blank fields blank):

APN: wap.cingular
Username:
Password:
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 066.209.011.32
MMS Max Message Size: 614400
MMS UA Prof URL:

Those receiving the 0xE800003D error: Did you install a carrier theme from Cydia? Like the AT&T logo or MakeitMine? If so remove that and try again. It seems that others before were getting that error because of this.

That’s it. As usual, since this is a hack, you are taking the risk of messing up your iPhone…

  • Taryn

Might be a stupid question, but I don’t have an option for CHECK FOR UPDATE. Do I just click on UPDATE? I just want to confirm before I do it because my unlocked/jailbroken iPhone is still on 3.0.1 and I’m afraid it will accidentally update it to the 3.1 firmware which I do not want. Thanks for your help!!

  • Tony

    Will this disable tethering?

  • Juan

    @Tony: No, it will not.

  • Juan

This ipcc version, 5.5, does not provide Cellular Data. In fact, it seems to delete it if available from previous versions.

  • Kyle

    @juan: so, don’t do this?

like taryn, i don’t have the “check for update” box, it just says update.

  • Tony

@Juan – Thanks! It works great!

  • Old Gold

I am getting an error message: Iphone could not be updated. UnKnown error occoured 0xE800003D

I am using Windows 7 by the way, not Vista. Could this be the issue?

    Anyone else have this issue?

  • MJ316

Shoddy instructions. While holding ‘Shift’ and selecting Check for Updates, all that does is check that I already have iTunes 9.0 and then prompts me to install 3.1 (ummm, no thanks). So, I held down on ‘Shift’ and clicked ‘Update’, which gives me a windows file dialog box, but what the hell to do from there??? Are we to extract the contents of the .zip file? I’ve done that and there isn’t a .ispw file within the .zip file (which is the ONLY thing the aforementioned Shift/Update combination allows me to do)…Any ideas?

  • MJ316

Ok, got it figured out how to locate the .ipcc file from the windows file box, but all that does is allow me to navigate through the folders within the .ipcc file…it didn’t update my phone. Am I missing something here?

  • @MJ316 did you download this with Safari??? You should just get one IPCC file, no zip or any subfolder. If you downloaded this with Safari (which by the way is crappy), then try again with Firefox or simply remove the .zip extension to your file so you just have an .ipcc file.
    s

  • MJ316

    Indeed…Safari was the problem…much thanks!!!

  • daniel

I got to step 4 and can not locate the file, it says its downloaded but when I’m in the window in itunes its not there. I’ve downloaded it in FireFox 3 times and still cant find it.

  • A.J.

    worked perfectly!! Thanks SP

  • Kyle

i’m having the same problem as old gold. “The iPhone could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (0xE800003D).”

You see. Sebastien probably forget to give credit to the persons who gave him this hack. Not to worry….. here is my orininal post dated on this site under headline (MMS for iPhone Now Available) on September 25th……

    WRONG!!!!

For anybody who wans MMS on their jailbroken iphone WITHOUT updating to 3.1 (which will render your iphone un-jailbreakable) You will need to download the AT&T carrier v5.5 only.

Here ya go…. Thanks savior1974 at MacRumors

    WINDOWS VERSION
    1. Download this carrier update file (v5.5)
    http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/29849/ATT_US.ipcc

    2. Close iTunes (if it is already open)

    3a. Click Start > Run > type:cmd then press enter. Run this command: “C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

    3b. (If you’re on x64 Windows) Click Start > Run > type:cmd then press enter. Run this command: “C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

    4. Open iTunes.

    5. Hold the shift key while clicking update under your iPhone in iTunes.

    6. Change the file type to “iPhone Carrier Configuration files” by clicking in the the bottom right corner and switching to *.ipcc. filetype

    7. Find the file of the carrier update you just saved to your computer in step 1, select it and click open.

    8. Your iPhone is now updated. Make sure to reset your phone, and when it restarts, MMS should be working.

    Mac/OS X Instructions

    1. Download this carrier update file (v5.5)
    http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/29849/ATT_US.ipcc

    2. Close iTunes.

    3. Open the Terminal Application and run this command: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

    4. Open iTunes

    5. Hold the Alt (Option) key while clicking update under your iPhone in iTunes.

    6. Find your file of the carrier update you downloaded and select it.

    7. Wait for the update. Once it’s done, turn off your iPhone and turn it back on.

    8. Your iPhone is now updated and MMS should be working fine.

@since os7, thanks. i’m all set now. i had the at&t carrier logo changed.

Shame it took the Author almost a week before copying this workaround off my original post.

I wonder how many jailbroken iphones he is responsible for rendering un-jailbreakable after informing that “you have to be on OS 3.1 to be able to download the carrier update”.

Not to mention leaving the most important piece of the instructions (0xE800003D error) out from the original post.

  • Since OS7

    Will this disable tethering?

IF YOU WANT MMS/TETHERING/AND VISUAL VOICEMAIL http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5QLYW0PL (ATT_US_STEALTH.ipcc 6.0ipcc) MUST BE ON 3.0/3.0.1

Also, rember to hit “make my life easier” (ECID storage) in Cydia when you are next time prompted to do so.

  • Sebastien

    @Since OS 7,

Hey, no offense but this hack has been around for weeks. So no, you were not the one who told me about it. Note that whenever credit is deserved, I give it to the appropriate person/site/blog/forum/reader of this blog. In this case, I saw this hack a few weeks ago and started writing about it, then kinda forgot. I don’t even know where I found it in the first place, but I am sure it wasn’t from you or Mac Rumors.

I do appreciate your participation in these comments and I hope you will keep doing it but I won’t give you credit for this post. HOWEVER, I will certainly edit this post and tell about your 0xE800003D error fix. I hadn’t seen this before and was not aware of it. You deserve full credit for this.

Now about the jailbreak part. You say I am wrong to say that you have to update to 3.1 if you want MMS. I am right! You do have to be on 3.1 if you want to be able to download the “official” MMS carrier update. I do say there is a hack that allows people not to be on 3.1 though, heck, that’s the whole purpose of this article!

I hope you understand and will keep writing these helpful comments 🙂

    Thanks

    Sebastien

  • daniel

Awesome, that fixed it. I had the AT&T logo also, thanks for the help!!

  • T-Will

This only works for iPhones on AT&T, right?

The previous MMS hack I used on my 2G caused a HUGE battery drain.

    • Hey T-Will, where have you been? I hadn’t seen a comment from you in a while 😉

Yes, this hack is only for AT&T. I haven’t noticed any extra battery drain. My battery sucks anyways…

  • T-Will

What’s up? Just been lurking lately…

Yeah, my GF’s 3GS just chomps through the battery. I noticed when I had turned on Gmail Push email, my battery was nearly empty by the end of the day. After turning off Push email, my battery rarely gets below 70% even with usage. Not sure if she’s installed MMS yet and noticed any difference in battery life.

  • Yep, Gpush killed my battery too. So does Google Sync, which is why I stopped using push for this.

Sebastien, “Hey, no offense but this hack has been around for weeks.”…… “I saw this hack a few weeks ago and started writing about it, then kinda forgot.”

No offense taken Sebastien, it’s just that here we are on a site that for all intents and purposes is catering to Jailbroken iPhones and when I asked the question last week about the carrier update messing with the jailbreak you were nowhere to be found for reply.

Then, I visited again only to find you telling your readers they had to upgrade to 3.1 in order to get MMS. I can understand the hack slipping your mind at first but certainly something shoulda clicked by then. Hence my original post on the 25th (with credit to its origin).

Sebastien, ” will certainly edit this post and tell about your 0xE800003D error fix. I hadn’t seen this before and was not aware of it. You deserve full credit for this.”

I appreciate it but that credit goes to savior1974 at MacRumors as well. Message # 12 September 25th, 2009 at 6:12 pm ‘MMS for iPhone Now Available’ http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/2009/09/25/mms-available/

Sebastien, “Now about the jailbreak part. You say I am wrong to say that you have to update to 3.1 if you want MMS. I am right! You do have to be on 3.1 if you want to be able to download the “official” MMS carrier update.”

Actually, the link IS the “official” AT&T carrier update. All we’re doing is forcing the “official” carrier update in itunes without needing to update Apples package.

Simply put Sebastien…. I’m on your side. I do enjoy the updates on everything iPhone but it is crucial to be as informative (hand holding) as possible when jailbroken users are running in to problems. I’ve found that NOT to be the case here on several occasions.

Thanks for your understanding where I’m coming from.

    • Since OS 7,

I understand. But please keep in mind that I don’t pretend to have answers to everything. I sometimes just don’t know and I’d rather not say anything and wait for someone like you to come over and drop a comment than just say that I don’t know. Every day people ask me questions and I do my best to answer but sometimes, I just don’t know and I can’t spend all day writing comments saying “I don’t know”. Do you know what I mean?

Again, I do my best but I also make mistakes, and it’s really nice to have people like you come over and say what’s really going on.

Please keep visiting and commenting. You sound pretty knowledgeable so maybe you’d like to write for the blog from time to time?

Is this hack for a 2g iphone with o.s. 3.01 with at&t thats jailbroken?

You can give it a shot, worse case is you reset but just having the new 5.5 carrier update shouldn’t alter your phone at all.

I know people who have done the carrier update on their 3g and 3gs’s who at one time had a 2g iphone and for that reason alone they could not get MMS to work on their newer iphones. Seems AT&T has that info (and block) in their system so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t happen.

    Only other alternative for 2g……
ActivateMMS2G which is available in Cydia via the iSpazio repository.

Remember to Uninstall “asBattery” if you had installed it previously…..

Instructions to enable MMS on iPhone EDGE:
1st Step : into Cydia and download the package ActivateMMS2G “available in the repository of iSpazio.

2nd Step : Restart the iPhone.

3rd Step : Next go to Settings > Messages and make sure MMS Messaging is ON. If it’s not, restart your iPhone one more time.

4th Step (Updated): into Settings> General> Network> Cellular Data Network, and add the MMS info for your carrier. You can check out their website or just call them and ask them.

Note : Do not install the hack on Firmware 2.2.1 or view a black screen with the Apple logo and will have to restore.

I assume that the reports that the 2g would not be able to use mms even after the update is true. I managed to do the update but still have no mms. I tried the hack from cydia “activate mms” and followed the instructions that someone left in comment section. In the website where you create profile, I was never able to even check the tether box. It kept saying that if you did not have edge settings to not worry it would get to that, but it never did. So if anyone can give good instructions on how to get mms on 2g either post here, or feel free to email me.

Thanks for this bow I can activate mms on wife’s phone without waiting for a pc version of redsnOw.

  • sleeplessdwarf

NVM. Once I updated the carrier listed here, I now have mms with cydia’s “activate mms2g” no extra steps whatsoever. Just installed, rebooted and it was there. Thanks a ton for this thread.

  • sleeplessdwarf

Spoke too soon. I have the camera, I can take pics and they show up, but message makes it 3/4 sent and give red ! with fail to send message. Looks like no mms for me until I upgrade.

  • Alex

iPhone 3G with 3.0 jailbreak and the procedure worked flawlessly for me. I cut/pasted the command line for Windows XP to ensure no typos on my part.

DOes this work in other network?

how to enable MMS on other networks outside US? i live in middle east.

  • sleeplessdwarf

I did the upgrade posted here on my wifes 3g. She has the camera and the mms gets sent, but the other person does not receive the pic. Wonder if this could be at&ts fault or the phone.
