How to Run iPad Apps on the iPhone

Did you know that you can run iPad apps on the iPhone? If your iPhone is jailbroken, there's a new way to run iPad-specific apps on the iPhone and iPod touch.

It's been technically possible to port iPad apps to the iPhone for quite some time, but not until now has it become a relatively straightforward process.

How to Jailbreak iPad 4.3.2 with PwnageTool

Just like RedSn0w earlier this week, PwnageTool has been updated to support the new firmware 4.3.2 for iOS. As previously stated, there wasn't much reason for folks on the original iPad to update to this latest software.

But for the people that did, PwnageTool is recommended to jailbreak your iPad. It is simple and about as solid as it gets when it comes to jailbreak applications. If you've never done this before, or need a quick refresher, check out the tutorial below.

If you are looking for reasons to hack your iPad, check out our article, The Top 5 Reasons to Jailbreak here.

Important note: PwnageTool is for Mac OS only, for those that use Windows and want to jailbreak, check out our RedSn0w tutorial. Again this jailbreak is only for original iPads, the iPad 2 has not yet been jailbroken.

Step 1. Obviously make sure your iTunes is up to date and your iPad is on the latest firmware (4.3.2). You're also going to need to download the latest version of PwnageTool from here.

Step 2. It's a torrent, meaning you'll need a client like uTorrent to open the file once it's downloaded. After it's installed, open it up and select iPad and Expert Mode and click next. Browse to HD/Users/$urname$/Library/iTunes/iPadSoftwareUpdates and select the 4.3.2 firmware.

Step 3. If PwnageTool likes the firmware you picked, it'll take you to a menu where you can tweak the jailbreak. If you choose Cydia packages, you can preinstall tweaks and apps so when the jailbreak gets loaded onto your iPhone, its already set up.

Step 4. Once you are done tinkering, select the build option and click next. This is where PwnageTool does its magic. It'll take a bit, so be patient.

Step 5. After the custom firmware is done building, PwnageTool will have you put your iPad in DFU Mode, but don't worry, the software walks you through this.

Step 6. If you do it successfully, iTunes should recognize that you have a device plugged in and ask you to restore. Hold down the Option key while clicking restore to get the option to choose your custom firmware. Once it installs, your iPad reboots and you are finished!

How to Downgrade iPhone iOS 4.3.2

With the release of iOS 4.3.2 this late last week, and the new iOS 4.3.2 redsn0w jailbreak still not completely stable, some of you might not want to wait any longer for a stable jailbreak, or maybe you’re having additional issues with the new OS. Whatever the reason might be, you can downgrade from your current iOS version to an earlier version using your SHSH blobs on file.

It is important you have your SHSH blobs on file for the iOS version you want to downgrade to. If you don’t have your SHSH blobs on file for the iOS you want to downgrade to, you will not be able to downgrade. You can check which SHSH blobs on file you’ve got by launching Cydia and looking at the top of the Cydia homepage where it lists all your saved SHSH blobs.

How to Jailbreak iPad 4.3.2 with RedSn0w

Original iPad owners didn't have much reason to update to the new 4.3.2 firmware released by Apple last week. The upgrade fixed FaceTime issues and the Verizon iPad 2 connectivity problem, but didn't contain any improvements for 1st generation tablets.

However if you did update, or would like to, there is a jailbreak available. RedSn0w was recently updated to support the new software. So for folks that have an original iPad on iOS 4.3.2, let me show you how easy it is to jailbreak it.

This is a simplified tutorial. For a full step by step guide, see the full RedSn0w Tutorial. Just make sure to get the latest version of RedSn0w. This is only for original iPad owners, as there is still no iPad 2 jailbreak available.

Step 1: Make sure your iPad is on the latest firmware, and that you have the newest version of iTunes.

Step 2: Download the latest version of RedSn0w (rc14) here. Download it to your desktop to make it easier to find.

Step 3: Launch the application and follow the on screen instructions, they're super simple.

Step 4: After selecting your 4.3.2 firmware and letting the software do its thing, you'll need to put your iPad into DFU mode. Power + Home button for 10 seconds and then Home button alone for 10 seconds.

Step 5: If you do this correctly, RedSn0w will work its magic. After it's done, your iPad will restart and you should see the Cydia icon!

Troubleshooting Cydia: Problems with Broken Repos

I had a scary experience last night. As I was searching for a certain tweak in Cydia, I noticed that I wasn't getting the results I was looking for. So I searched for a few more apps and tweaks, and I kept getting no results. I thought about it for a minute, and then realized that every item I had searched for was from the BigBoss repo.

I've recently upgraded to the iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak, and I haven't gotten to play around with my main iPhone setup that much yet.

To my surprise, the BigBoss repo was broken in Cydia. BigBoss is a pre-installed repo in Cydia, so it's very odd that it wasn't working. The good news is that there's a way to re-add default Cydia repos without re-jailbreaking the iPhone...

How to Access Your Apple TV’s File System With CyberDuck

Yesterday we showed you folks how to SSH into your jailbroken Apple TV2 through your desktop OS' command line prompt. Today we are going to show you how to create a connection with your hacked Apple TV2 in a much more user friendly way.

All you need is CyberDuck for Mac or Windows, and your Apple TV's IP Address. Of course you'll also need a jailbroken Apple TV2, and both it and your computer must be on the same Wi-Fi network. For those new to the game, you can find your IP in your Apple TV2's main menu, Settings > General > Network > IP Address.

Once CyberDuck is done downloading, fire it up. Your going to want to choose to create a new connection.

From the drop down menu, select SFTP. In the Server field type your IP Address that we had you get earlier.

In the Username section type root and for the password, type alpine.

Then just click Connect.

You should now be looking at your Apple TV's root directory. Besides the ability to view your ATV2's folder sub system, you also have write privileges. This is one way to install Plex or Firecore's ATV Flash.

How to SSH into Your Jailbroken Apple TV2 to Install Apps

If you have recently jailbroken your Apple TV2 for the first time, you might find yourself wondering what to do next. Sure the default NitoTV is cool, but there's only so much you can do with it.

If you are seriously looking to venture into the world of Apple TV hacking, you might want to pay attention. One of the best ways to access your Apple TV and install files is through SSH. This is just basically a secure connection between 2 devices.

In this case it is between your computer and your Apple TV2. OpenSSH, written by Saurik is installed during the jailbreak process. This is what allows your Apple TV to make a connection with your computer.

I'm on a Mac but I assume it is basically the same process for Windows users with its command line prompt app. Mac users open spotlight and type in Terminal. Once open you want to enter the following:

ssh root@192.168.x.x

Obviously you want to fill in the x's with your Apple TV2 IP address. To find it, just open the main Apple TV menu and go to Settings > General > Network > IP address.

Don't get discouraged if you don't get it right away, it took me a few minutes before I finally got prompted for a password. Also you must make sure you are on the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV.

The default Apple password is alpine, like on all of their other iOS devices.  Type it in and hit enter. You should now see Apple-TV:~root# which means you have write access to Apple TV's hard disk.

For an example I will give you the commands to install XBMC on your AppleTV2 which is a popular home theatre PC software.

echo "deb http://mirrors.xbmc.org/apt/atv2 ./" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.list

apt-get update

apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2

After the last line is entered, you should see some code scrolling across your Apple TV2 and your machine will restart. After it reboots, you should see XBMC in your Apple TV Main Menu. You have successfully SSH'd into your Apple TV!
