Apple’s aggressive iPhone trade-ins in India could include try-and-buy

India Today on Monday said Apple has partnered with India's local distributors (Apple Stores don't operate in the country) on a smartphone trade-in program against new iPhone 5c and iPhone 4s purchases in an attempt to boost sales of the colorful new iPhone that has largely failed to attract buyers compared to the flagship iPhone 5s.

The Times of India today shared some additional tidbits about the initiative and it seems the country's would-be iPhone buyers can now bring in their old iPhone or one of non-Apple handsets to claim lower prices against new iPhone 4s/5c purchases, and other benefits. More on that right below...

Apple relaxing water damage restrictions for iPhone trade-ins this week

Do you have an old iPhone that has suffered light water damage, but still works just fine? Looking to trade it in towards the purchase of a newer model? Well up until now, you couldn't do that at an Apple Store. But that might be changing soon.

According to a new report from 9to5Mac, Apple will be relaxing its water damage restrictions for iPhone trade-ins this week. The site says that the trade-in value for handsets will no longer be affected by the device's Liquid Contact Indicators...

Best Buy to offer $100 for old phones towards purchase of iPhone 5s, 5c

It appears that Best Buy is on the verge of launching another smartphone trade-in promotion next week. According to a new report, the retailer will begin offering a minimum of $100 for select older, working handsets.

The catch here is that this trade-in money must be used to purchase a new iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c at the subsidized price—meaning you'll have to sign a new two-year agreement with one of Best Buy's carrier partners...

Forbes on Wednesday reported that Microsoft will be extending its existing $200 iPad trade-in offer to Apple's iPhone as well. Sure enough, today the promotion has gone live. It's part of Microsoft's running #timetoswitch Windows Phone and Windows 8 campaign that encompasses television, print, online and social media channels.

Similar to the iPad promotion, the Windows giant has partnered with recycle firm CExchange to lure would-be switchers into bringing in their existing iPhone handset in good working condition for up to $200 credit, redeemable against Microsoft Store purchases...

Despite Tim Cook dodging questions about the then-supposed iPhone trade-in program during June's earnings call, the rumors have turned out true after all.

Apple on Friday officially launched the new iPhone Reuse and Recycling Program, basically a trade-in initiative aimed at boosting iPhone sales at Apple's own retail stores, which currently comprise only twenty percent of iPhones sold (Cook wants to sell half of all iPhones at company stores).

Yesterday, a flurry of details was released regarding Apple's upcoming iPhone trade-in program, a sales initiative in partnership with the recycling firm BrightStar aimed at boosting iPhone sales and upgrades at company-run retail outlets across the United States. Sources stepped forward today, offering new details concerning the official name, availability, launch date and terms and conditions.

As suspected all along, the trade-ins will be handled through Apple's existing Reuse and Recycle Program, which has been available for quite some time. Furthermore, the same program will serve as Apple’s new in-store recycling program.

Flurry of details about Apple’s upcoming iPhone trade-in program emerge

Bloomberg in June asserted that Apple was gearing up to launch a trade-in program for iPhones at its own retail stores. While the company has been accepting trade-ins through its Reuse and Recycle program for quite some time, this would mark the first time it's made trade-in offers first hand, via its rumored partnership with the recycling firm Brightstar.

More details have surface Monday on the long-expected initiative designed to allow would-be buyers to earn instant credit for their old iPhones as a way of driving upgrades to newer models. According to one source, Apple will refurbish traded-in iPhones and potentially resell them, while clearing up Genius Bar to focus on non-swappable devices.

Retail giant Walmart is putting its own spin on the growing trend toward trade-ins. Ahead of the expected September 10 unveiling of Apple's next smartphone, the retailer is offering credit toward in-store purchases.
