Apple Made 75% of All Mobile Phone Profits in the World Last Quarter

We've seen a lot of interesting data regarding Apple's latest quarterly earnings report over the last few weeks. What some are calling, "the quarter heard around the world," will go down in history as one of the most profitable three month periods of any company (not just technology-related) ever.

Popular Apple analyst Horace Dediu added to the pile of statistics this morning with a report about Apple's mobile profit earnings. Apparently, the Cupertino company raked 75% of all mobile phone profits (worldwide) last quarter...

Samsung Big Game Teaser Teases Apple Fanboys

You might have heard Samsung is spending big bucks to have a TV commercial air during the next Super Bowl. They're so excited that they can't help bragging about it all over the web, just like a high school girl who just scored a prom date with the star quarterback.

Trying to generate buzz prior to the big day, Samsung released a teaser that, as usual, makes fun of Apple fanboys for standing in line to get the new iPhone. Of course, Samsung wouldn't have such a problem since no one actually ever had to get in line to buy a Samsung phone. That's how popular they are...

EU Launches Antitrust Probe into Samsung

Apple may have struck a blow in its current battle with Samsung over wireless technology patents, without actually doing anything.

News broke today that the European Union is launching a formal investigation into Samsung and its potential breach of EU antitrust rules. The investigation itself will focus on FRAND patents which means patent appliciations related to standards must be “fair, reasonable, and on non-discriminatory terms.”

The EU obviously believes Samsung hasn't been acting entirely above board with regards to its current patent dealings with Apple...

Smartphone Makers Reportedly Delaying Handsets to Avoid iPhone 4S Competition

The iPhone 4S is selling so well that Digitimes believes the competition is running scared. So much so that the likes of HTC, Samsung, Nokia and LG apparently delaying the release of new handsets until the iPhone 4S sales have slowed.

All the big smartphone players except Apple are expected to show off their upcoming handsets at Mobile World Congress in Spain, but if Digitimes is correct, then we'll have to wait until the second quarter before we can buy them.

Apple's fourth quarter showing was particularly impressive, garnering 23.9% of the market share. Samsung took second place with 23.5%. Behind the big two, Nokia made up the top three with 12.6%...

Apple Now the Top Smartphone Manufacturer in the World

Earlier today we told you that iPhones made up over half of Verizon's smartphone sales last quarter, making Apple the top smartphone manufacturer on one of the world's largest wireless carriers.

But given Apple's record-breaking financial report today, it's achievements go far beyond that. With nearly 40 million iPhone's sold last quarter, Apple just became the top smartphone-maker in the world...

Dutch Judge Denies Apple Appeal, Deems Galaxy Tab Legal

Apple today lost the latest round of its legal battle with Samsung, with a Dutch appeal court siding with the Korean tablet and smartphone maker.

Apple had claimed that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet had infringed upon some of company's iPad patents, and sought a ban of the infringing hardware. At an appeal hearing today however, a Dutch judge at The Hague deemed the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to be a legal device, saying that it does not infringe on Apple's patents...

By now, most of you have heard Steve Jobs' infamous "war on Android" quote from his recently-released biography. It goes something like, "I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."

He wasn't kidding. The latest estimates suggest that Apple's litigation fees its incurred in its ongoing legal battles with Android manufacturers add up to more than $100 million dollars. And the war is far from over...

Apple Goes After Galaxy Nexus With Slide to Unlock Patent

A few months ago, Samsung's mobile president Shin Jong-kyun told reporters that Apple would have a hard time finding any of their intellectual property in his company's new Galaxy Nexus handset.

He obviously underestimated Apple's legal team. Reports are coming in that Apple has just filed another lawsuit in Germany against Samsung for the use of — get this — its patented 'Slide to Unlock' feature...

German Court Scuppers Samsung’s 3G Patent Lawsuit Against Apple

With Samsung and Apple locked in the middle of so many lawsuits these days, it can be difficult to keep up, but the latest movement in the saga sees the Korean smartphone maker receive a black-eye after a German court rejected one of its patent claims.

Samsung had claimed that Apple infringed upon one of its patents which pertained to 3G/UMTS technology and took the matter to the German courts. One of seven such claimed infringements, this one in particular has met an early death, with Germany's Mannheim Regional Court rejecting Samsung's claim of patent infringement.

Judge Andreas Voss made the decision although the reasons for it are currently a little opaque, with FOSS Patents left to venture a guess...

Apple Files More Lawsuits Against Samsung in Germany

It's been nearly a year now since Apple filed its original patent infringement suit against Samsung, and the battle is still far from over. In fact, Apple has just filed a new set of lawsuits against the Korean manufacturer.

Bloomberg is reporting that Apple has just filed two new design-related lawsuits against Samsung in Germany's Dusseldorf Regional Court. The suits call out several Samsung products including 10 smartphones, and 5 tablets...

Samsung Wants Apple to Reveal Its Contract with Qualcomm

Samsung has requested details of the contract between iPad and iPhone maker Apple and the company which provides the chipsets for those machines, Qualcomm.

With Samsung currently locked in a legal battle with Apple over the Cupertino firm's possible patent infringement, the nature of the deal between them and Qualcomm could leave Apple almost immune from Samsung's claims.

If Qualcomm has licensed its technology to Apple directly then the company effectively has the same deal as Samsung, meaning "Apple's buying Qualcomm chips is as good as paying for the patents" and neutralizing any litigation in the process...

Samsung Executive Says Apple’s Rumored TV Set is “Old News”

Just by looking around the showroom floor at this year's CES, you can see that Apple's rumored TV set has already made an impact on the industry. The electronics show is littered with voice-activated "smart" televisions, and the like.

But you wouldn't know it by listening to Samsung's Australian audio visual director Phillip Newton talk. The executive made some interesting comments recently in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald regarding Apple's TV set.
