When scouting out external drives, there is a lot to consider. Speed, durability, size, and so much more. We've found (and tested) the best HDDs and SSDs for your Mac or PC.
LaCie, the premium brand of Seagate, makes some fantastic products. I've used their Rugged Drive (the same one you can say many an Apple Store employee toting around) for years. Recently, I've been using their updated 2Big Thunderbolt 3 Dock that not only offers plenty of storage, but a multitude of ports and expansion options as well.
Usually we see Thunderbolt 3 devices belong to one of two categories. The first being storage, the second being docking station. There are very few that fall in the middle of that Venn diagram. The CalDigit AV Pro II belongs there, as well as LaCie's 2Big Thunderbolt 3 Dock.
As per usual, to get the best look at this desktop beast, check out my in-depth video.
Most major manufacturers have been steadily upgrading their external drives to take advantage of USB-C and Thunderbolt 3. Now that Apple has replaced all their ports on their latest machines, we've seen more and more hit the market. One of the earliest adopters is LaCie who brought their chic Porsche design to their USB-C mobile drive.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been testing out the Neil Poulton designed LaCie Rugged RAID portable hard drive. This drive, with its can’t-miss color, is specifically designed to stand up to tough environments.
The Rugged RAID features a rubber non-slip casing that will help it absorb impacts and stand up to harsh conditions. In fact, it’s dust, water, and shock resistant. If you’re someone who travels with an external hard drive, then you’re automatically more susceptible to all three of these potential failure-inducing scenarios. This can make the LaCie drive an attractive prospect.
Not to be confused with similar-looking drives in the LaCie lineup, this Rugged RAID drive actually ships with two independent hard drives pre-configured with RAID 0 for a total of 4TB of space. This provides end users with lots of headroom and extremely fast read and write speeds.
But hard drive speed isn’t the only thing fast about this drive. The LaCie Rugged RAID is also equipped with a USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connection for high speed I/O up to 240MB/s. Even better is the fact that the Thunderbolt connection is bus powered, which makes it easy to travel with.
Needless to say, I’ve had high expectations for this hard drive ever since it was first announced. Does the LaCie Rugged RAID live up to this OS X user’s expectations? Read and watch the full review to find out.
Following a bit of backlash that Apple has only chosen to include a USB-C port on the new MacBook, LaCie is working to appease customers with the first external hard drive and accessory for the new Apple creation. Unveiled on Tuesday, the Porsche Design Mobile Drive has been updated to perfectly suit the new Mac with USB-C.
LaCie unveiled its new LaCie Mirror external hard drive on Sunday, a designer-inspired creation wrapped in Gorilla Glass, ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show kicking off in Las Vegas this week.
LaCie, a Seagate Technology brand that makes premium storage solutions and accessories, has refreshed its Fuel external wireless hard drive with an expanded capacity of two terabytes.
That's double the storage of the previous Fuel and LaCie claims the updated product now offers "more storage than any 2.5-inch wireless hard drive on the market."
It uses Seagate's free Media app to make available your files to Apple devices over a Wi-Fi network.
The Fuel also includes a built-in ten-hour battery and plays nice with AirPlay so you can mirror content on your big screen TV through the Apple TV.
