Apple investigating new methods to detect water damage in iOS devices

The current method for detecting water damage on an iOS device is pretty ancient. Like other electronics, most of Apple's mobile products have liquid contact indicators that change colors when the device comes in contact with excessive moisture.

The problem with these indicators is that they can sometimes change colors without ever being submerged in water. For instance, heavy humidity can cause a device to appear as if it has suffered severe water damage. So Apple is looking to change things...

Apple settles ‘Antennagate’ lawsuit: free iPhone bumper or $15 for iPhone 4 owners

After the iPhone 4 was first launched, many users began to notice 3G reception issues when placing their palm over the antenna part of their iPhone 4. The issue was quickly dubbed the "antennagate" by bloggers.

While also receiving many complaints from customers and a few lawsuits, Apple quickly made free iPhone bumper cases available to everyone, which they said remedied the issue. The issue was fixed in iPhone 4s manufactured later.

One of those US class-action lawsuits is finally seeing a settlement, reports Cnet...

Apple posts guide to help new developers start creating apps

For those who have never dove into building iOS apps, it can be quite a difficult experience when first starting out. Apple has strict rules about what apps can and can't do that can be easily broken. Luckily, Apple is pretty good about giving assistance to new developers.

To help new developers move onto the iOS platform, Apple has posted a stylish guide titled "Start Developing iOS Apps Today", introducing them to what it takes to build an iOS app...

Facing criticism, Foxconn raises worker wages by as much as 25%

Apple and its overseas manufacturing partners have been taking quite a bit of heat over the last month. Reports of underage employees, 60+ hour work weeks and other poor working conditions have been constantly grabbing headlines.

But just as we have reported on the bad things, we must also report the good. It appears that in the face of criticism, Foxconn, Apple's largest supply chain partner, has decided to substantially increase its workers' wages...

Apple seeking to sue the already bankrupt Kodak

Back in January we ran a story regarding the on-going legal issues between Apple and the 131 year old photography company Kodak. Back then, Kodak intended to file a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple, concerning 4 Kodak owned patents.

Just a little over a month on and the tables have well and truly been turned. According to the Rochester Business Journal, Apple is now seeking permission to file new patent-infringement claims against Eastman Kodak Co. Apple's counter-claim is that Kodak actually stole the idea for these patents in the first place...

Apple sold more iOS devices last year than it ever sold Macs

We don't really need more proof that the iPhone and iPad are a success, but every now and then we still like to be reminded of it. This time, it's Horace Dediu from Asymco that shares some incredible stats about the success of iOS.

To put things into perspective, Dediu created a graph that shows the cumulative sales of Apple computing products over the years since their launch. The conclusion is just breathtaking. More iOS devices were sold in 2011 than all the Macs ever sold...

Google caught overriding Safari users’ privacy settings

User privacy has been a hot button issue over the past few months thanks to high profile scandals like the CarrierIQ fallout, and the more recent Path debacle. And now it looks like we can add Google to the list of violators.

In a recent investigative report, The Wall Street Journal claims that the search giant has been intentionally overriding the privacy settings of both desktop and iOS Safari users to better track their web browsing activity...

When an iPhone meets a Samsung Note

A couple weeks ago, Samsung spent big bucks to play a commercial during the Super Bowl for their latest device: the Galaxy Note, a 5.3-inch phablet (phone/tablet), powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, and 16GB of built-in memory. Oh yes, and I almost forgot. It also comes with a stylus!

The guys over at Joy of Tech imagined what would happen if an iPhone met a Samsung Note. Quite entertaining, and perfect to start the day on a funny note...

Why Apple won’t give the iPhone or iPad an LTE radio. Yet.

Right, I'm going to come right out and say this before I go any further: I'm going to get a lot of stick for this, and the rest of the iDB team thinks that I've lost my mind, but I'm going to write this anyway. I don't think the iPad or iPhone is going to get an LTE radio. At least, not yet.

Now I know this flies in the face of what we are being told by just about everyone, including a very recent article by the Wall Street Journal. The general consensus is that Apple will indeed bring an iPad 3 to market during the coming weeks, and that said iPad 3 will be the first Apple device to come packed with an LTE radio for hooking up to super-fast 4G networks.

I, however, think you're all wrong. Here's why...

Apple granted 19 new patents covering switches, Airplane Mode and more

Apple is known for throwing as many patents onto the wall as possible with the aim of getting at least a few to stick. That has never been more true than since the arrival of the iOS platform with iPads and iPhones seeing more than their fair share of patent applications.

Now the US Patent and Trademark Office has laid out nineteen new patents which have been granted to Apple, and while some are Mac related, others have a distinctly iOS bent to them.

One such patent covers something that we all take for granted - the Airplane Mode feature that is built into all iOS devices, and is a God-send if you happen to use an old FM-transmitter with an iPhone...
