Upcoming tweak puts customizable app shortcuts to your iOS lock screen

The iPhone's lock screen has got to be the source of endless inspiration for jailbreak developers and conceptual artists who are constantly coming up with new ways to broaden functionality of your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. UI designer @Sentry_NC of the Auxo fame thought long and hard about juicing up the iPhone's lock screen and came up with this concept showing how the iOS lock screen pulley grabber could be for more than just the camera app.

What's best, we heard that jailbreak developer Rudolf Lichtner is already working on turning his idea into a reality. As always, our own Jeff Benjamin will be monitoring the progress of this tweak and sharing his hands-on impressions as soon as the finished code hits Cydia...

How to change your iPhone carrier logo without jailbreaking

There's still no way to jailbreak the iPhone 5, or other post-A5 devices running iOS 6, and that makes a lot of people sad, us included. But the lack of a jailbreak hasn't totally stifled the flow of creativity, as it's given rise to a bunch of popular "no jailbreak required" hacks and tweaks.

The latest such example is CarrierEditor — an app that runs on OS X that allows you to easily change your iPhone or cellular enabled iPad's carrier logo without being jailbroken.

There are, of course, plenty of ways to alter the carrier logon on a jailbroken device, but if you're like many who have the iPhone 5, or a non-jailbroken iPhone 4S, then CarrierEditor is a great workaround until a jailbreak finally touches down. Auxo for iOS 5.1.x now available on Cydia

Auxo — the popular jailbreak tweak we covered in depth last week — is now available on Cydia with iOS 5.1 support in tow. As you may recall, the initial version only supported iOS 6 out of the gate, and many users, pined for iOS 5.1 support, since a great majority of jailbreakers have chosen to remain on 5.1 firmware for obvious reasons.

Thanks to developer, Kyle Howells, who assisted with porting the tweak, the team behind Auxo was able to meet its turnaround time for adding support for the older iOS firmware. Samsung facing $15B fine for asserting standard-essential patents against Apple

Reuters reported last week that the European Union would “very soon” formally charge Samsung for asserting standard essential patents against Apple.

Smelling danger, just days prior to the development the Galaxy maker had withdrawn all its injunction requests in European courts.

Friday morning, UK's The Guardian newspaper reported that the European Commission could now slap the South Korean conglomerate - the world's top cell phone maker by volume - with a substantial fine of up to ten percent of its global revenue, amounting to as much as fifteen billion dollars based on Samsung's 2011 revenue of $148.9 billion...

Android and iOS may have been all the rage in 2012 - and especially on Christmas Day when App Store downloads surged 87 percent versus the December 2012 average - but what about Microsoft?

While sales of Windows 8 tablets and Windows Phones have yet to reach a critical mass, the Redmond firm understands it needs more quality apps to lure users.

Quite an interesting get-together recently happened at Microsoft's headquarters as the firm met with a cherry-picked group of iOS developers in an attempt to encourage them to produce versions of their apps for the Windows Phone platform. Is Microsoft throwing money at iOS devs' feet? This reminds us of how the firm spent millions in the gaming space to steal PlayStation exclusives, much to its advantage...

YouTube, Google Maps top list of most downloaded apps on Christmas Day

New report shows labor conditions at Foxconn improving
