Foundation announces complete E.O. Wilson’s Life on Earth for iPad

Following-up on Apple's announcement of the forthcoming iTunes U 2.0 update with new creation tools and discussion feature on iPads, Foundation - a non-profit behind E.O. Wilson’s "Life on Earth" - today announced launch of the complete series on iTunes U and the iBooks Store.

Provided free of charge, the first seven chapters in the 41-chapter series released today as interactive iBooks textbooks, with the remaining materials to be rolled out throughout 2014. The new iTunes U 2.0 app, due July 8, will enable teachers to create, edit and manage entire courses directly on iPad for the first time, while students will get to take advantage of some interesting new collaboration capabilities, including the ability to start class discussions and ask questions right from their iPad...

Apple adds ‘Best New Game Updates’ section to App Store

Apple has introduced a new section on the App Store called "Best New Game Updates" for showcasing recently updated games for iPhone and iPad. The new category accompanies the long-existing "Best New Games" section, which is now exclusively for promoting new game releases. Plants vs. Zombies 2 and FarmVille 2 are among the first lineup of updated games featured.

App Store discovery has been a growing problem for developers, as the total number of apps available has eclipsed the 1 million mark and counting. This new section should provide at least one additional way for iOS gamers to uncover the best new content updates, and I personally recommend reading our daily App Recap roundup on top. Today only: PayPal offering $10 iTunes Gift card for $5

Last December, PayPal started selling iTunes gift cards and other digital vouchers through its new Digital Gifts Store.

It's perhaps the most convenient and hassle-free option to quickly top up your iTunes credit via PayPal, provided you're in the United States.

The problem is, every now and then other retailers discount iTunes vouchers.

Typically, 20 percent off is the best deal you can find and 30 percent or more off is pretty rare, but we've never seen a discount of 50 percent or more on iTunes Gift cards.

Good today only and while supplies last, PayPal is now offering a $10 iTunes Gift card for just five bucks...

App Store, iTunes and iBooks are down for some users [update: it’s back to normal]

There are multiple reports on Twitter and elsewhere indicating that the App Store, iTunes and iBooks services are either down or functioning erratically. The downtime appears to be affecting users in the United States, Sweden and possibly other regions. On top of that, the App Store appears to be loading incorrectly for some users as well. I'm a big spender on digital warez sold on Apple's content stores. Typically, I would pick up various digital books and iOS/Mac apps on a regular basis - music not so much, that's what Spotify is for.

I'd also rent TV shows and buy movie downloads from time to time. You couldn't go as far as to say that I'd buy anything because I'm very particular and as such purchase only items that have really piqued my curiosity. The problem is, my interests are very diverse and my wallet can only bear so much.

But if you're a movie buff and don't mind having your movies tied to Apple devices (hello, FairPlay DRM!), you must have spotted Apple's movie bundles before, some of which are sold at a deep discount.

In this not-to-be-missed opportunity the California firm is currently offering several memorable movie trilogies in high-definition, including The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings and more, priced at $14.99 each...

Traces of Preview, TextEdit, standalone iTunes Radio and Siri API discovered in iOS 8 code

As a prominent iOS developer noted on Twitter, looks like Apple is actually toying with a standalone iTunes Radio app, as previously suspected.

In addition, Apple looks to be prepping new stock iOS 8 apps - TextEdit and Preview - as well as potentially enabling third-party Siri access.

Code hooks and hidden assets discovered in the iOS 8 Beta code seem to support these findings, largely corroborating much of the earlier findings by prominent Apple blogger Mark Gurman.

Note that this is no guarantee that Apple will roll out these features - that is, it will only introduce them when they're ready for prime time. For example, The New York Times previously reported that split-screen functionality didn't make the cut in iOS 8. With that in mind, it's fairly safe to speculate that Preview, TextEdit, third-party Siri access and a standalone iTunes Radio could be slated for the iOS 8.1 update...

Beats buy and iTunes Radio limitations blamed on Apple’s ‘arrogance’ and incompetent managers

According to two Apple sources familiar with the development of iTunes Radio, current limitations of the free service and the $3 billion acquisition of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre's Beats talent, brand, headphone business and streaming service is all the result of the firm's "arrogance" and shortsightedness of its managers.

Worse, some high-ranked members of Apple's music teams reportedly didn’t even know that Spotify was an on-demand streaming service and not an Internet radio service akin to Pandora and iTunes Radio...

Shortly after wrapping up Monday's two-hour keynote talk, Apple made the entire presentation available for streaming through its WWDC iOS app, via the Apple TV and on its website on any Mac or Windows PC with QuickTime installed.

If you want to keep the keynote video, plan on watching it on multiple devices or just have a lousy Internet connection to stream in high-definition, you can now download the entire presentation to your computer for later watching...

Broadcast radio stations and locally targeted ads reportedly planned for iTunes Radio

According to The Information, a technology blog run by the former Wall Street Journal star reporter Jessica Lessin, Apple is about to bring broadcast radio stations to its iTunes Radio service and permit advertisers to target listeners with greater granularity than before.

These latest strides, said to materialize later this year, are believed to be aimed squarely at the likes of Pandora as Apple moves to make its service more competitive versus established Internet radio offerings...

Apple reportedly in talks with retailers over mobile payment service

According to a new report from 9to5Mac, Apple executives are in discussions with directors from retail chains over a mobile payment service. Citing sources familiar with the project, the site says the talks have taken place over the past few months at 'high profile' retailers.

Apple has long been said to be interested in the mobile payments space, which has several players right now but no clear leader. It's believed the Cupertino company could leverage its 800 million iTunes accounts and iPhone user base to come in and disrupt the market...
