List of Jailbreak Apps Compatible With iOS 4

With iOS 4 coming up, jailbreakers might wonder what Cydia apps will or will not be compatible with their iPhone. iDB reader Ed left a comment in my article about how to make sure your iPhone is ready for iOS 4 in which he linked to a spreadsheet of apps that are compatible with iOS 4.

Check out the list and contribute to it if you can. The more the merrier.

Facebook for iPhone Gets An Update. You Can Now Watch Facebook Videos

Facebook for iPhone has been updated to version 3.1.3. From the largest social networking in the world, you would expect more than this disappointing update that brings very few new features:

You can now watch Facebook videos. You can now view and write on walls of events. Uploaded photos are now 720px wide.

Facebook still hasn't updated their application to be compatible with the iPad. It's not a big deal to me as I usually go to Facebook directly from Safari to get the full experience.

Proswitcher for iPad Alpha Release Available

Proswitcher for iPad is now available in alpha release. Ryan Petrich, most likely my favorite jailbreak developer, just informed me that he made Proswitcher for iPad available to the general public instead of pushing the alpha to just a few users.

For those of you who don't know Proswitcher, it is a great jailbreak app that gives a nice and simple UI to Backgrounder, the app that first brought multitasking to the iPhone.

You can get Proswitcher HD (or whatever it will be called) on your iPad by adding the following source to Cydia: http://rpetri.ch/repo.

Be warned! This is an alpha release which means it can be very buggy. As soon as I installed the app, my screen froze, I hard rebooted several times until the issue finally disappeared. Other than that, I haven't had any issue.

I'm very excited to get Proswitcher on my iPad. That is one jailbreak app I was really missing.

Give it a try and tell us what you think.

Thanks to @MikeErickson for the tip.

iMovie for iPhone Will Only Run on the iPhone 4

When Apple revealed the iPhone 4 last week, they also announced iMovie for iPhone, a video editing application that goes beyond the trimming option of the iPhone 3GS. Much was left unknown about iMovie, with many people asking about the capabilities of this soon-to-be-released application.

Jeff Carlson of TiBits got a bit more information about iMovie from one of his sources at Apple:

iMovie for iPhone will be for the iPhone 4 only. It will not be compatible with the 3GS or older models because it requires the A4 chip iMovie will not be able to run on the iPad Edited movies can be transferred to iTunes but they can't be further edited on iMovie on the Mac.

At $4.99, that is an application I will make sure to download as soon as I get my hands on the iPhone 4.

Apple Now Accepting iOS 4 Apps Submissions

Apple started sending emails to developers to let them now they can submit their iOS 4 apps for review and approval. iOS 4 contains many new features that require developers to update their applications to make sure they will be compatible.

Previously known as iPhone OS, Apple decided to rebrand this operating system that runs on the iPhone, the iPad and the iPod Touch. I think the big new feature of iOS 4 is the long-awaited multitasking support that will allow applications to run in the background, as long as they follow Apple's guidelines of course...

What's your favorite new feature of iOS 4? Are you looking forward to trying on specific apps on iOS 4?

How to Password Protect Specific iPhone Apps

LockDown is a new application available in Cydia that lets you protect individual applications with a password. If like me your iPhone gets into many hands, there might be some applications you'd like to use LockDown with.

If you have an iPhone and your kids are used to play with it, installing LockDown on a few of your apps might be helpful to prevent them from accidentally delete some of your stuff.

LockDown gives another layer of protection to your sensitive data, even though we saw that anyone willing to can easily steal your iPhone data.

You can download LockDown from Cydia for free. One advice though, don't do the mistake I just did... Don't install this on your iPad (at least not as of today) because it is not compatible and will get you into trouble...

App Switcher Circuitous Updated for iPad

The excellent Circuitous has been updated for the iPad. For those of you who don't know Circuitous, it is a custom app switcher that shows your open applications in a dock on top of your springboard from where you can easily and quickly launch and exit apps.

To get Circuitous to work at its best, you will need to install Backgrounder and Activator.

Circuitous previously made it in our list of best jailbreak apps for iPhone. Something tells me it's now going to make it in our list of best jailbreak apps for iPad.

Mover+ Transfers Videos, Photos, Contacts and More Between iPhones Over The Air

Last week I told you about myPhoneDesktop, an application that can send images, URLs, phone numbers and text wirelessly to your iPhone from a desktop computer. Today I want to briefly introduce a somewhat similar app called Mover+.

Mover+ is an application that lets you transfer videos, photos, contacts, web bookmarks and text clippings from an iPhone to another, or from an iPhone to an iPad, all this over the air.

If for example you shoot a video at a dinner party with friends, instead of showing the video on the tiny iPhone screen, you can just move it to your iPad for everyone to watch it on a larger screen.

In order for this to work, you have to have Mover+ installed and running on both devices. Put what you want to send on the Mover table, connect via wifi or Bluetooth, and flick it offscreen where you want it to go!

You can download Mover+ from the App Store for $1.99.

Quickly Change Wifi Network With YFiSelect

Do you hate the fact that you have to exit out of your app and go into the settings just to change your wifi network? Well now there’s an app for that!

From the developer that brought you jailbreak apps such as Music Controls, Calendar Pro and Resupported comes his latest app called YFiSelect. YFiSelect gives you quick access to your wifi network options from anywhere.

In order to get YFiSelect to work you just simply hold your carrier down until you get prompted to change your wifi network or you hold down the wifi button in SBSettings. It is also compatible with Activator and WiCarrier.

YFiSelect is available on Cydia for $0.99. It is compatible with the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Netflix App Hacked to Work on iPhone

Until now you could only play the Netflix application on the iPad but a smart MMI reader figured out a way to port the app to the iPhone.

Here are the instructions on how to set up Netflix on the iPhone:

Get the Netflix app from iTunes Locate and rename the .ipa file to .zip and extract it Go into the .app file, located at /appname/Payload/appname.app, (show package contents) and open the info.plist Edit all references of OS version to show iphone OS 3.1.3 (or your respective version). Save and close

Now, just copied over SSH (with permissions repair and a respring) this will show up on the phone. With Netflix though, it required the mediaplayer frameworks from the iPad.

SSH, get the mediaplayer frameworks folder from an iPad, located at /System/Library/Frameworks/MediaPlayer.framework Copy that to the same location on an iPhone (don't forget to back up the original from your iPhone just in case). Change permissions to 755 recursive for directories, and then go inside the folder and change the individual file permissions to 644. (Or just recursive 755 to all files/folders on the MediaPlayer.framework folder)

Now the mediaplayer frameworks are in place, all that's left is a manual install of the app.

SSH, go to /private/var/stash/Applications Copy the appname.app file there and change permissions. (I used 777 recursive for simplicity's sake, but I'm sure the normal 775 would work). Launch and have fun.

These instructions were copied from MMI and slightly altered for reading purposes.

This great hack has some downsides. Apparently Netflix on the iPhone will drain your battery, crash repetitively and will be very slow on 3G, which is not very surprising. Maybe these reasons are why Netflix hasn't released an official iPhone app yet.

I'm currently in France and I can't get Netflix to work here but I'd love to hear your feedback if you try it on. [via MMI]

ProSwitcher HD for iPad to be Released Soon

ProSwitcher, one of the best jailbreak apps that brought multitasking to the iPhone is about to be updated for the iPad. Ryan Petrich, the developer of ProSwitcher sent a tweet a few hours ago announcing the future release of the application.

For those of you who aren't familiar with ProSwitcher yet, it is a multitasking app for the iPhone that kinda replicates the Palm Pre “cards” feature by adding a very nice UI to Backrounder, the jailbreak app that allows you to run apps in the background.

I'm a big fan of Ryan Petrich's work in general, and specially of ProSwitcher which I consider a must-have application. I'm definitely looking forward the iPad release. So far, there is no estimated time of arrival but I doubt it will take too long.
