Apple on Black Friday added six Galaxy devices to its Samsung suit

Following Samsung's motion asking Judge Paul S. Grewal for permission to amend its infringement contentions against Apple with the iPad mini, iPhone 5 and the latest iPod touch, Apple on Black Friday conveniently brought a motion seeking to add latest Galaxy devices to its California suit, including the Galaxy S III running Android Jelly Bean and the four-inch Galaxy S III Mini. The filing adds a total of six recently-released Galaxy gadgets to Apple's ongoing patent lawsuit against Samsung...

The Glif for iPhone 5 is here

Sooner than later, avid iPhone photographers yearn for a tripod mount to help frame their shots perfectly. That's why we were so excited about the Glif, an all-in-one tripod mount that launched two years ago. And now, from the minds of the original creators Dan Provost and Thomas Gerhardt - the duo behind Studio Neat - comes the Glif for your iPhone 5.

First batch of this awesome accessory is on its way to the warehouse and will begin shipping early next week. If you're serious about iPhoneography, this could be your must-have holiday item. If you're interested in the Glif, I've included more info and a making-of video right after the break...

Analyst: no Black Friday iPad mini discounts means huge demand exists

While Black Friday discounts abound at Apple and around the web, one product where deals are absent is Apple's iPad mini. The reason: people want to buy the smaller iPad deal or no deal, one analyst opines. According to Wells Fargo's Maynard Um, "early checks suggest demand continues to be robust with strong store traffic through the week and early Friday". That ship times remain two weeks for both the Wi-Fi and Cellular models points to the iPad mini becoming a must-have holiday item (kids agree)...

Apple picks new battery supplier, drops Samsung

Apple has chosen two China-based battery companies to supply the iPad and MacBook, says a Friday report. Amperex Technology Limited and Tianjin Lishen Battery would replace Samsung SDI, a subsidiary of the South Korean firm that is both Apple's chief rival and largest supplier. The report is just the latest indicating Samsung and Apple are reconsidering their close relationship.

As the two smartphone giants attempt to out-compete each other in the courtroom and store shelves, Samsung's role appears to be shifting from major supplier to important manufacturer...

Analyst calls for a cheap iPhone in two years

Piper Jaffray's resident Apple analyst Gene Munster - you know, one of the iTV fame - is back at it predicting Apple's gonna launch an inexpensive iPhone model in two years time. Recognizing Apple's tiny market share in emerging markets like Russia, India, Brazil and China (collectively referred to as BRIC territories), he's calling for an unsubsidized, sub-$200 iPhone around 2014. Currently, Apple's handset is a high-end play, with older models selling at reduced price points.

As carriers pay big bucks to subsidy its high cost, users typically must sign on a dotted line. But not everyone is willing to accept contractual commitment in exchange for an iPhone. Meanwhile, competitors are successfully exploiting Apple's price weaknesses, churning out Android cheapos that have pushed the platform in places like China to as much as an astounding 90 percent smartphone share...

Apple’s Black Friday sale now live in the US

Ok folks, Apple's Black Friday sale has now officially begun here in the US. After being down for several hours, the company's Stateside online store has returned with discounts on several popular products.

As usual, the price cuts are modest. But for a company that rarely puts its products — particularly current gen models — on sale, it's a fairly big deal. We've got all of the best deals and details after the fold...

Meet Slope, a stylish aluminum clad stand that uses suction to hold your iPad

http://vimeo.com/53816268

Ever since I got my first iPad back in 2010, I've been constantly looking for the perfect stand. For a guy who's all about minimalism (you should see my office), simply leaving the iPad lying flat on the table just feels wrong. Cases help, but I prefer stands that suspend the tablet mid-air, iMac style. That's why I'm so excited about a new Kickstarter project. Dubbed the Slope, it's an iPad stand with a twist, one that perfectly blends with your Apple-branded work environment...

Why Apple is just plain mediocre in web services

Recently, a pattern has begun taking shape that I fear signals something worryingly awful is afoot as excellence takes a back seat at Apple in favor of mediocre web services. It's always been that way, critics might add. Indeed, here we are, at the end of 2012, and yet weekly outages of key iCloud services such as iMessage and FaceTime are still a norm rather than a rare exception.

While iCloud storm is raining on users, Apple seemingly struggles in figuring out how to sprinkle its magic dust on Internet software. With over half a billion iOS and Mac devices straining its data centers, something clearly had to give. The iPhone maker isn't an isolated example: competitors experience outages, too. But Apple's different in that its online woes are symptomatic of a much larger set of problems the company faces.

Cupertino's infrastructure is lacking. For all the computational power its array of super data centers provide, Apple's software underpinnings are outdated and increasingly incapable of handling high load. Software shortcomings are putting Apple at risk at a time when competitors like Google tap their massive scale and expertise to successfully marry hardware to Internet software in ways Apple cannot...

Apple’s Black Friday deals go live in Australia and New Zealand

Apple's online stores in New Zealand and Australia went offline earlier this morning in preparation of the previously teased Black Friday deals. The one-day shopping event offers a $100 discount on select MacBook Pro and Air models and various savings on the newest iOS devices and accessories like EarBuds and Smart Covers. The Black Friday deals page is now live on Apple's online stores in New Zealand and Australia. We're expecting the deals to go live on the US Apple Store soon and will updated this article accordingly...

Google complains Apple is withholding iOS 6 source code

Just as Samsung added the iPad mini, fifth-gen iPod touch and fourth-gen iPad to its suit, claiming Apple's latest gadgets violate its patents, news broke that Google's handset arm Motorola Mobility is thinking about doing the same in its litigation against Apple in the Southern District of Miami, Florida. And in order to establish that Apple's devices violate Motorola patents, Google is moving to perform some infringement analysis and has filed a motion complaining that Apple is withholding the source code for iOS 6, which powers the latest iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices...

Samsung adds iPad mini, iPad 4 and more to latest patent suit

Though the current US patent trial between Apple and Samsung, the one that resulted in a $1 billion verdict, is still far from over, another Stateside court battle between the two companies is already heating up.

Unlike the previous case, this new set of lawsuits pertains to more recent products from both sides including Samsung's family of Nexus devices, Apple's iPhone 5, and now the new iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini...

Judge orders Apple to reveal full HTC patent deal to Samsung

On Friday last week, Samsung asked the court to force Apple to turn over the full details of its recently announced patent settlement with HTC. It feels the terms of the deal could be useful in its ongoing legal battle with the iPad-maker.

Apple has since agreed to allow Samsung to see the pact in a heavily redacted document — leaving all of about 33 words. But tonight, a judge has granted Samsung's motion to compel. So Apple will have to reveal the entire agreement...
