Wooden iPhone Case

So we've all seen the diamond bezeled iPhones over the years, as well as gold plated. Usually they are thousands upon thousands of dollars and don't even look that nice. If you're more of an outdoors kind of geek, then look no further for the first wooden iPhone 4!

Case maker KARVT has come out with these surprisingly good looking skins, for the iPhone 4 and 3GS. Pre-orders for the lumber looking protectors start at $25 for your iPhone 4, and $14 for the 3GS. I can't accurately inform you as to how well they work, but they don't seem to be oak, so no throwing your devices to test them. As to whether or not the case helps or hurts your signal, you better just knock on wood!

Oh Look What I Just Received in the Mail

I just received my free iPhone Bumper in the mail today, courtesy of Steve Jobs and everybody at Apple.

First impressions? Meh. I don't like cases and the Bumper is no exception. The iPhone 4 is such a beautiful device that it kills me to trap it in a case. I put it on, took it off and gave it to Tina so she can protect her very first iPhone. She'll definitely need it more than I will.

If you haven't yet, here is how to claim your free case from Apple, or simply browse our iPhone Accessories Store to choose from hundreds of different iPhone cases.

Apple’s Free Bumpers Shipping

I ordered my free black Bumper last week and it initially said the item wouldn't ship until late August. I received an email from Apple yesterday night telling me my order had shipped. I suppose I will receive it by tomorrow.

If you have an iPhone 4, you're entitled to receive a free case from Apple so make sure you check out these instructions on how to get it. If you've already ordered your free case from Apple, you should start receiving a shipment notice soon as well.

How to Get Your iPhone Case Refunded

If you purchased a Bumper from Apple or AT&T, you can get it refunded. This is part of a move aimed at appeasing angry iPhone 4 owners who are having reception issues with their iPhones.

How to Get Your iPhone Bumper Refunded

If you bought your Bumper by Credit Card, you should have already received a refund. Apple notes it may take one full billing cycle for the refund to appear on your banking statement. If you want to check for yourself, you can always check the status of your refund here.

If you bought your Bumper by cash, check, or gift card at an Apple Store, return to the Apple Store with your receipt by September 30th to get your refund. If like me you don't keep receipts, I suppose that showing them your Bumper case might be good enough to get a refund, but don't quote me on that.

If you bought your Bumper from the online Apple Store with a gift card, Apple will automatically mail you a new gift card for the total amount of the refund.

If you bought your Bumper from AT&T, fill out this form and mail it to Apple by September 30th. They will process your refund as soon as they receive your claim.

Note that only Bumpers will be refunded. If you bought a third-party case, you are not eligible for a refund. However if that's the case, you are eligible for a free Bumper and here is how to get it.

How to Get Your Free iPhone 4 Case

Those of you who purchased an iPhone 4 can claim your free case now. Following last week conference, Apple decided to give away free cases to every iPhone 4 owner to fix the antenna "non-problem"...

How to Get Your Free iPhone 4 Case

Step 1: Download the iPhone Case Program app from the App Store.

Step 2: Launch the app and login with your iTunes credentials.

Step 3: Select the case of your choice.

Step 4: Wait 3-4 weeks to receive your case.

I just ordered a black Bumper. There isn't much selection and I assume shipping time will go up and up as you wait, so hurry up!

Free iPhone Cases Will Cost Apple $175 Million

Since the antenna debacle is kind of calming down, I thought I would revive it by throwing some big numbers at you.

During today’s Q3 earnings conference call, Apple revealed that it predicts that the free iPhone 4 cases and bumpers will result in $175 million in deferred revenue. It hits Apple’s books as a liability — essentially a debt or a negative balance on the bottom line. Apple says that it will expense the cost of the cases, which will help mitigate the overall cost on the bottom line.

In other words, Apple is accounting for $175 million in lost revenue on its Q4 balance sheet, all due to free bumpers and cases.

It sure sounds like a lot of money but when you think about it, it's actually not much compared to what the antenna issue could have really cost Apple if they had kept being silent about it.

Poll: Are You Satisfied With Apple Giving Away Free Cases With the iPhone 4?

Yesterday Steve Jobs announced that Apple will be giving away free cases to iPhone 4 owners, a move that will certainly appease most of us. I'd like to get your feeling about the whole situation though. Could you please take the poll below and tell us what you think. Make sure to leave a comment if you have more to say.

Apple Giving Away Cases to Every iPhone 4 Owner

I guess I was right... once again. In a move aimed at pleasing every iPhone 4 customer, Apple just announced they are giving away cases to every iPhone 4 owner.

Apple doesn't make enough Bumpers to satisfy the demand so instead of giving us Bumpers, they will give us the option to choose from several cases (including the Bumper). If you bought a Bumper before, guess what, you will get a refund!

You'll be able to apply on Apple's website to order your free case starting at the end of next week.

Review: Case-Mate Gelli Checkmate for iPad

I don't like cases. I really don't, especially on Apple products where the design and the look and feel are a big part of the experience. However, I've been changing my mind about cases over the past week after I received the Case-Mate Gelli Checkmate case for iPad.

Although I've never wanted to stick my iPhone into a case, I feel it's a bit different with the iPad. Unlike my iPhone, the iPad is big, doesn't fit in my pocket, and goes around many hands. For these reasons, I felt my iPad was actually much more vulnerable than my iPhone was so I decided to give it some protection.

The Case-Mate Gelli comes in 3 translucent colors and gives your iPad case a funky design that will definitely set it apart from the rest. I got mine in grey which actually is more "clear" than "grey". You can also get it in a flashy green or blue, but these colors are definitely too much for me.

Not only do I like the look of the Gelli but I also like the feel of it. It feels really good in my hands as the thermoplastic material used gives me more grip and prevents my iPad from sliding off my hands or off my legs, depending on my position.

It's very simple to put on, and once on, it obviously gives you easy access to every port or button. The case goes all the way to the front of the iPad to cover just about a millimeter past the bezel. This way, even if the iPad falls flat on the screen, it will be protected, that is assuming the ground would be completely flat of course.

I feel a little let down that Case-Mate didn't throw in a free screen protector in the box. That's no big deal though, we will use the InvisibleShield for iPad.

Pros:

Perfect for every day usage Light Stylish, elegant Not "bulky" Feels good in your hands Adds grip Provides great protection Relatively inexpensive ($36.95)

Cons:

Not a heavy duty case Doesn't come with a screen protector

Is the Case-Mate Gelli a heavy duty case for iPad? No, it's not. It is however a light and stylish case that will do a great job at protecting your iPad in average every day usage. The Gelli completely sold me on iPad cases and I'm glad I now have it to protect my iPad from those awful scratches I would get from putting it on the coffee table.

I'm still not sure I would want it for my iPhone because I don't feel my iPhone needs protection. However, my fiancee Tina will be getting the Case-Mate Gelli for iPhone 4 as soon as she gets her white iPhone. She's much less careful with her devices than I am and will need something like this to protect her iPhone.

At $36.95 from our iPhone Store, the Case-Mate Gelli case for iPad is a product I highly recommend. You can order the Case-Mate Gelli here.
