Google accelerating plans to launch Siri competitor code-named Majel

We've known for awhile that Google's been working on improving Voice Actions in Android. Needless to say, last October's release of the iPhone 4S and its headline voice assistant feature dubbed Siri sent Google's engineers back to the drawing board in an attempt to re-envision what conversing with an Android device should be like. According to the well-informed Wall Street Journal, the search giant has now "accelerated" plans to bring Siri competitor to the market.

Here’s Microsoft’s keynote with Surface tablet demo crashing

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer yesterday took the stage to unveil his company's iPad challenger named Surface at a Los Angeles presser.

Vice president Steven Sinofsky was on hand to show off the product and of course it wouldn't be a Microsoft event without a system crash.

If you're wondering about the features Microsoft's device brings to the table, here's the full keynote video...

iOS 6 tidbits: Spotlight folder labels, iTunes and wallpaper previews

Not a day goes by without discovering subtle touches in Apple's iOS 6 software. We covered most of the big and little things already. Perhaps unsurprisingly, cool nice-to-haves still get discovered on a daily basis, proving iOS 6 is the most well-rounded release to date.

iDB told you yesterday how the virtual keyboard is now clever enough to capitalize after quotes and emojis (iOS 6 also sports a bunch of new emojis). We even proposed how Apple could make sharing between third-party apps simpler and more akin to Android's comprehensive Action Menu.

Today, I wanna talk about some noteworthy store tweaks and cosmetic changes in Spotlight and Wallpaper settings...

Apple starts airing new “Do It All” iPad commercial

Apple has started airing a new iPad commercial this evening entitled "Do It All." As the name suggests, the ad gives examples of some of the many things you can do with the tablet.

The spot covers everything from sending an email to creating a presentation. And the commercial ends with the tagline "Do it all more beautifully, with the Retina display on iPad..."

Why you shouldn’t count Apple’s Maps out just yet

The iOS 6 portion of Apple's WWDC keynote last week was headlined by its all new mapping software. As predicted, the company unveiled a completely rebuilt Maps application with 3D city views and other features.

The app is available in the recently-released iOS 6 beta, and so far, it has yet to impress. On top of missing popular features like Street View and transit directions, it also appears to be missing a ton of street data.

But don't count Apple's Maps out just yet...

A major update to the Facebook SDK for iOS “coming soon”

The social networking behemoth Facebook just announced in a post over at its Facebook Developers blog that it is working on a major update to the Facebook SDK for iOS that will launch "soon".

The company also confirmed its acquisition of the Face.com startup that should result in a more accurate facial recognition when you upload and share your photos...

Apple begins removing traces of upcoming products from iOS

It looks like Tim Cook wasn't joking underscoring Apple would "double down on secrecy" during his fireside chat with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the D10: All Things D conference. As noted by TUAW, the latest beta of iOS 6 lacks certain references to future Apple devices that have long been the staple of the rumor mill's crystal ball peering. Not like this changes anything, mind you...

Survey confirms: devs prefer iOS over Android

Despite what Google's Eric Schmidt would have you believe, developers still prefer Apple's iOS platform over any other mobile operating system. More importantly, the vast majority of programmers don't think a rumored introduction of a taller iPhone this fall will complicate their life as adapting their apps to a larger canvas shouldn't be a biggie...

Display Recorder hits App Store, records your device screen in real time

You'll wanna act on this one right now. Display Recorder, an app by Bugun Software which lets you record your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad screen in real time, has just hit the App Store, priced at two bucks a pop (not to be confused with Ryan Petrich's app of the same name available for jailbroken devices). If I were you, I'd act now: Apple's likely to pull Display Recorder at a moment's notice...

Foxconn wants more Sharp shares, aims to beat Samsung displays on clearness

In another hint that Hon Hai Precision Industry, also known in the Western world as Foxconn, could be gearing up for mass production of a rumored Apple television set, Reuters now reports that Foxconn is in talks with the Japanese multinational corporation Sharp about increasing its stake.

This is interesting development as Foxconn in March bought an eleven percent stake in Sharp worth $844 million. The two companies now run Sharp’s cutting-edge display plant in Sakai, Osaka, leading some to speculate that Foxconn made the move on behalf of its biggest customer, Apple of California, which has long been rumored to be readying production of a full-blown television set, which Foxconn publicly denied...
