iPad Pro and iPad mini 4 allegedly in tow for Apple media event next Wednesday

Contrary to prior rumors, 9to5Mac is reporting that Apple's long-expected oversized 'iPad Pro' will be formally announced at the iPhone 6s press event after all. The event's been confirmed to take place a week from today, on next Wednesday, September 9, at San Francisco's Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

The publication learned from sources that the forthcoming presentation is set to be one of largest events in Apple's history. In addition to the iPad Pro and the iPhone 6s/6s Plus, it should serve as a launchpad for a fourth-generation iPad mini, a substantially refreshed Apple TV set top box and new Apple Watch Sport bands.

Why I’m super excited about the gaming potential of the new Apple TV

At this point, I think we can all agree that the state of gaming on the current generation Apple TV leaves a lot to be desired. Yes, it’s possible in some respects, through AirPlay, but it’s clunky, laggy, and never quite lived up to its potential.

With the new Apple TV, however, things will surely get better. In fact, I think that gaming is going to really hit its stride on Apple platforms with the advent of the new gaming-centric features on Apple’s upcoming refresh to its set top box.

As we discussed in the last episode of Let’s Talk iOS, gaming is set to take a gigantic leap with Apple TV gen-4. In this post, I’ll outline 5 reasons why avid gamers should start licking their chops at the potential of the device that Apple is set to reveal next Wednesday.

Claimed iPhone 6s storage tiers and prices revealed ahead of Apple event next Wednesday

Revered gadget leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer recently published a photo of claimed iPhone 6s packaging which suggests that Apple's upcoming iPhones will continue to offer just sixteen gigabytes of storage in baseline models.

A new report Wednesday by 9to5Mac's well-connected Mark Gurman reaffirms claims that Apple won't be ditching the 16-gigabyte tier.

Moreover, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus should have unchanged on-contract pricing as the 2014 models: $199/$299/$399 for the 16/64/128GB iPhone 6s and $299/$399/$499 for the 16/64/128GB iPhone 6s Plus.

Report: Apple TV lacks 4K video streaming, 8/16GB prototypes tested and more

The allegedly upcoming Apple TV refresh will file as the most detailed overhaul of the device's hardware, but it doesn't seem that the new box will support 4K streaming, as per 9to5Mac's sources.

The publication reported today that even though the fourth-generation Apple TV will be powered by Apple's sped-up A8 processor (likely overclocked, as there will be no battery bottlenecks), it purportedly won't support video streaming and AirPlay in 4K.

This is something of a surprise considering that the A8 processor inside the iPhone 6 was found capable of rendering 4K 3,840-by-2,160 pixel footage without a hiccup.

For $12 a month, you can now enjoy Hulu completely ad free

Unlike Amazon and Netflix who stream commercial-free movies and television shows in exchange for a monthly fee, Hulu's existing $7.99 per month plan includes limited advertising. Wednesday, Hulu unveiled a new monthly plan that gets rid of all advertising for an extra $4 a month.

As noted in Hulu's media release, commercial-free viewing is available to both new and existing customers for a monthly fee of $11.99.

Crisp drone footage narrated by Steve Jobs offers a detailed look at iSpaceship progress

The Apple Campus 2 project, a future 2.8 million square foot home for approximately 12,000 Apple employees, is coming along nicely. The structure, affectionally dubbed the iSpaceship due to its ring-shaped design, was recently filmed from above by Silicon Valley-based videographer Duncan Sinfield who shared his footage with MacRumors.

The high-quality aerial video includes segments of Steve Jobs' 2011 project pitch to the Cupertino City Council as a voiceover. The video is well worth watching as it gives details on the different buildings Apple is constructing while offering progress comparisons with the previous footage from early August.

New Apple TV has universal search, $149 priced reaffirmed by credible report

Following a recent report by 9to5Mac's reliable blogger Mark Gurman that a fourth-generation Apple TV will cost between $149 and $199, BuzzFeed's John Paczkowski has corroborated that information, adding that the set-top box will also include a universal search feature.

Billed as another tentpole feature, universal search will allow owners of the forthcoming set-top box to search for a show or movie once “and see results from all sorts of different sources.”

iOS 8 now powers 87 percent of active devices

After struggling to gain a single percentage point over a four-week period, the adoption rate of iOS 8 now appears to have accelerated as iOS 8 now powers 87 percent of the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices in the wild, as measured by the App Store on Monday, August 31, 2015.

That growth came at the expense of iOS 7, which has gone from powering thirteen percent of iOS devices two weeks ago to accounting for twelve percent of hardware in active use.

A month ago, iOS 8 adoption sat at 85 percent and iOS 7 comprised thirteen percent of iOS gadgets in the wild. Pre-iOS hardware continues to scrape out a mere two percent.

Imgur for iOS gains search and revamped interface

After relaunching its iOS app and introducing an all-new interface in the Android client three months ago, Imgur today announced a major revamp of its iPhone and iPod touch application, a free download in the App Store.

For starters, the app has at last gained a Search feature so you can search for specific viral posts on the service. The app's grid view has been redesigned to show bigger thumbnails, push notifications have been improved and profile screens revamped for a more pleasing appearance.

Huawei announces a new Android phone with a Force Touch-inspired pressure-sensitive screen

The IFA trade show in Berlin is well under way, and Huawei, Chinese OEM of Android smartphones, just announced its Mate S—a new smartphone with Force Touch-esque technology incorporated into the screen. Of course, Huawei isn't officially calling it "Force Touch" in its press materials, but it is doing so via hashtags in tweets from its official Twitter account.

During its press event, Huawei took the opportunity to show off its new force-sensing screen weighing an orange by placing the piece of fruit on top of the Mate S' screen. I have to admit, that's kind of cool, but it also seems a bit odd at the same time.

iPhone 7 rumored to switch back to using glass-on-glass screen technology

Unhappy with the in-cell screen process used in production of iPhone displays which is plagued with lower touch sensitivity on screen edges, Apple is reportedly considering a return to glass-on-glass (G/G) touchscreen panels for an 'iPhone 7,' a technology it ditched with the release of the iPhone 5 in the fall of 2012.

According to a somewhat sketchy report published Wednesday by DigiTimes, Apple is currently sampling glass-on-glass touch samples for 2016 iPhones.

If true, the iPhone 7—or whatever a 2016 iPhone ends up being named—will feature better touch accuracy, improved Multi-Touch performance and better touch detection on screen edges. In addition, glass-on-glass technology would permit the company to develop a bezel-free iPhone and support 4K resolutions.
