Thor: The Dark World coming to iOS this fall

Gameloft and Marvel announced the official tie-in game for the upcoming Thor sequel this weekend. It's called 'Thor: The Dark World - The Official Game' (that's it's real name), and it will be arriving on iOS and Android platforms this November.

We don't know much about the game, outside of its title. But judging by this trailer Gameloft posted this afternoon, it looks like it's going to feature gorgeous graphics, and the usual hack-and-slash gameplay. We've posted the clip after the fold...

Apple refunds father $6000 for App Store purchases made by 8-year-old daughter

I don't have kids yet. But when I do, I'm going to make sure that I take all of the necessary steps to prevent them from making purchases in the App Store. There are various ways to do this, and for me it's just common sense—I wouldn't leave them with real money.

But apparently, it's not such a cut-and-dry matter for some folks. Take this story by UK's Mirror publication, which went viral this weekend, about an 8-year-old girl racking up a staggering $6000 App Store bill on her father's iPad by making several in-app purchases...

AT&T introduces new 300MB and 2GB data plans

AT&T has introduced two new Mobile Share plans this morning, rounding out its family of Mobile Share rate options it first introduced in the summer of last year. The offerings are designed to allow users to share monthly data allotments across multiple devices.

Previously, the plans started at 1GB of data per month and then jumped straight to 4GB. But today, AT&T announced that it would be adding 300MB and 2GB plans to the mix, giving users that don't require much data a wider selection of options to choose from...

Researcher claims he alerted Apple of developer center vulnerability

As you've probably heard by now, Apple's developer center was hacked. The portal has been down for over 4 days now, as the company says it is completely overhauling its systems, updating its server software, and rebuilding its entire database.

A statement from Apple claims ‘an intruder’ attempted to secure personal information about developers from the site, but it provided no further details about the incident. Now, a security researcher is claiming responsibility for the attack...

WSJ: Apple testing 13-inch iPad, larger iPhones

Apple and its suppliers are testing larger screens for iPhones and tablets, according to a new report by The Wall Street Journal. The outlet claims the Cupertino company has asked its Asian partners for a wide range of screen sizes for prototype devices.

In recent months, Apple has requested smartphone screens larger than 4 inches—the size of the displays on its current iPhone and iPod, as well as screen designs for a new tablet device that is said to measure slightly less than 13 inches diagonally...

Would you pay again for iOS 7 versions of apps you already own?

In a few months, Apple will release the largest update to its mobile operating system since the original iPhone debuted in 2007: iOS 7. The software has been virtually rebuilt from the ground-up, with new features and an all-new user interface.

Because this new version of iOS is so different than its predecessor, developers will have to spend a serious amount of time bringing their app code and UI elements up to speed. The question is, should they charge users for these major updates?

Apple developer site hacked, some info may have been exposed

On Friday, we noted that Apple's developer center—where it hosts downloads, documentation and other resources—had been down for a record 48 hours. Well here it is Sunday, and the dev portal appears to still be out of commission.

At first, the company was mum on the outage, saying only that it was sorry that "maintenance was taking longer than expected," and that it would make up for the lost time. But today, it broke the silence, announcing it has been hacked...

Saurik posts exploit and fix for ‘Master Key’ Android vulnerability

Jay Freeman, also known as Saurik, is well known by iOS users for his work in the jailbreak community. Not only does he run Cydia, the definitive jailbreak store, but he also develops tweaks and handles a number of other aspects.

But Saurik is also making a name for himself among Android users as well. Back in May, he released a working form of his Cydia substrate for Google's platform, and this weekend he's posted a fix for a major security vulnerability...

Over 700 million phones could be vulnerable to SIM card flaw

A German security researcher has discovered a massive vulnerability—one of the first of its kind—in the encryption used by some mobile SIM cards that could potentially allow hackers to remotely take control of their host handsets.

According to a report by The New York Times, the flaw relates to cards using DES (Data Encryption Standard)—an older standard that's being phased out by a number of manufacturers, but is still used by hundreds of millions of SIMs...

Apple Store app to be redesigned with free iTunes content in iPhone sales push

Apple will release a new version of its Apple Store application for the iPhone and iPod touch next week, according to a new report. The update will include a redesigned interface and a handful of new features, including free downloadable iTunes content.

The move is said to be part of Tim Cook's goal to sell more iPhones direct from Apple's direct sales channels. Apparently, the plan is to get the app installed on as many device's as possible so that more people are exposed to the company's choice products...

Consumer Reports weighs in on device upgrade plans

Earlier this week, we took a comparative look at the various new device upgrade plans that carriers have introduced over the last several days. There's T-Mobile's 'Jump' plan, AT&T Next, and Verizon's 'Edge' program.

After crunching some numbers, we found that T-Mobile's offering was the better of the three, as it doesn't include device subsidy costs in its rate plans. And it looks like Consumer Reports, who did its own math, agrees...

Popular RPG ‘Shadowrun Returns’ coming to iOS next week

A little over a year ago, game developer Jordan Weisman took to Kickstarter to help fund the development of Shadowrun Returns—an RPG game for Mac, PC and mobile devices. Shadowrun has made an appearance on a number of consoles since it first debuted on the SNES back in 1993.

Needless to say, Weisman's Kickstarter project was successful. In fact, it surpassed its goal of $400,000 within the first 48 hours, and went on to garner nearly $2 million from over 36,000 backers. And after several months of rigorous development, the team is finally ready to launch...
