Latest iOS Beta Easter Egg Fools Us All With Fake Apple Product References

You have got to love Apple's sense of humor. The folks in Cupertino have left a nice easter egg in the latest iOS 5.1 beta. 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman went looking inside the 5.1 beta 2's .plist files and came across something that made us chuckle.

Apple knows how the blogosphere works, and the rumor mill typically predicts future product names based off internal references in iOS beta SDKs. It looks like we all just hit the jackpot.

Apple Announces 500,000 Apps in the App Store

Apple has announced over 500,000 apps in the App Store. In a press release this morning the Cupertino company also reported that the Mac App Store has seen 100,000 million downloads since its launch in January.

After three years the App Store has become the most successful mobile marketplace to date, and Apple has served over 18 billion downloads to customers.

iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak Will Work on 5.0.1

Another quick update on the state of the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak: French hacker pod2g has confirmed that the iOS 5 untether will in fact work on iOS 5.0.1.

It was originally thought that 5.0.1 had patched the untethered jailbreak, and we recommended that jailbreakers stay on 5.0 if they wanted an untether in the near future. We're pleased to report that potential jailbreakers on iOS 5.0.1 can breathe a sigh of relief.

Chronic Dev Team Shows Off iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak On Video

We've been waiting for months to see evidence that an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is indeed ready for prime time, and pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team has just released a demo video of the iOS 5 untether to wet our appetites.

The simple video indicates that the highly-anticipated jailbreak is nearly ready. However, we don't have an exact ETA on when it will arrive.

Google Releases Currents in the App Store to Compete with Flipboard

Google has just released a new app called Currents. The app offers a magazine-like interface for reading the web, including Google Reader.

With Google announcing its new Currents app on both the iOS and Android platforms, the search giant is set to take on similar apps that offer a personalized reading experience on mobile devices.

Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City are two popular games for consoles like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The two games have also been made available on the Mac and PC.

Apple’s Phil Schiller Endorses Flipboard for iPhone, App Already Installed on 1 in 10 iPads

We told you about the release of Flipboard's highly-anticpated iPhone app last night, and the release has been rocking the blogosphere this morning. Flipboard is such a big deal that even Apple's own Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, has endorsed the app on his public Twitter account.

Flipboard's success on the iPad is also phenomenal, as the app has already been download 4.5 million times and is currently installed on 1 in every 10 iPads.
