Will in-app audio recording in iOS 18’s Notes sherlock the Voice Memos app?

Apple’s Notes app on iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 allegedly lets you record audio and capture voice notes on the go, much like the built-in Voice Memos app.

Fix voice memos not syncing via iCloud from iPhone to Mac

AppleInsider has learned from sources familiar with iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 that support for audio recording will be built in at the application level.

“The new in-app audio recording feature will let users record, save and play audio recordings directly from the Notes app,” AppleInsider reports. This information wasn’t corroborated by other sources at press time.

iOS 18’s Notes app is your portable audio recorder

Marko Zivkovic, AppleInsider:

Recordings made within the app get embedded within individual notes, meaning that users will have the option to include additional text or images alongside their audio recordings. This would allow users to, for example, add descriptions or context to an audio recording made within the app.

And:

The audio recording feature has the potential to benefit a wide array of Apple users. With it, students could record their classes or lectures and then add notes or screenshots of the whiteboard—all in one note. The same use case and overall concept could be applied to business meetings as well.

And:

People who travel could record a guided tour of an area and later add screenshots of the things mentioned in the recording. This information would, once again, all be stored in a single note, making navigation relatively easy.

Everything you store in the Notes app syncs across your other devices via iCloud; voice recordings will be no exception.

This could sherlock the Voice Memos app

AppleInsider hasn’t seen the interface around the audio recording feature but was told that it looks much like the stock Voice Memos app. The report doesn’t mention it, but this alleged new feature could obsolete the built-in Voice Memos app for capturing and sharing audio recordings on the go.

Doing so would undoubtedly make perfect sense. Voice Memos is an extremely straightforward app, so much so that one could easily imagine its audio recording and editing tools being integrated into the improved Notes app.

Notes on iOS 18 could also support mathematic notation

AppleInsider claims iOS 18 brings another new feature, Math Notes, which reportedly supports proper mathematic notation in your notes.
Apple Notes app iconMath Notes will be available as a new option from within the Notes app, joining the existing types of notes. It’s said to integrate with Apple’s Calculator app, which will see some changes in iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15.

Apparently, there’s a dedicated option in the Calculator app to open math notes.

We’ll soon know more as the first public betas of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15 and other prerelease software from Apple will drop following the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote on June 10.
