Rootful palera1n ending support for Substitute tweak injection in next update, switching to ElleKit advised

If you’re using palera1n, the checkm8 bootrom exploit-based jailbreak tool for arm64 devices (iPhone X and earlier) running iOS & iPadOS 15.0 and later, then you may want to know about some important changes that are coming in a future update.

The rootful palera1n jailbreak will end support for Substitute tweak injection.

The aforementioned changes will impact users of the rootful edition of palera1n in particular, as highlighted by a post on X (formerly Twitter) by @MasterMike88 that was re-posted by the palera1n team.

As it would seem, anyone who is still using Substitute for tweak injection on the rootful edition of palera1n is now urged to either switch to the rootless edition of palera1n, which is now the best way to experience jailbreaks on modern firmware, or to uninstall Substitute and install ElleKit for tweak injection instead.

ElleKit is the latest and most actively maintained tweak injection method to date, so this change isn’t exactly bad news.

And while some people still prefer their rootful jailbreak over rootless, it should be stated that most jailbreak tweak developers are now developing for rootless jailbreaks — not rootful — so making the switch to rootless is our recommended remedy since it helps future-proof your jailbreak for future tweak releases.

As of now, Substitute has been removed from the rootful palera1n repository, so it is no longer available to download. This is to help facilitate the switch to ElleKit, which is now the recommended tweak injection method.

Should users fail to switch from Substitute to ElleKit, they will likely stumble upon problems with compatibility when the next palera1n update comes out. Users could always avoid updating, but since jailbreak updates are usually important to the jailbreak’s stability and user experience, we strongly advise against this and recommend instead either installing ElleKit or switching to rootless.

At this time, the palera1n update that will introduce these Substitute-related problems is not yet live, but will be soon. So this should be considered an early warning to get your software prepared before updating to the latest rootful palera1n build to avoid any issues with system stability.
