GrowingBadges causes your apps’ missed notification badges to grow in size as they pile up

Sometimes when receiving a slew of iPhone or iPad notifications while you’re away, you might feel inclined to simply ignore them rather than marking them as read. That’s a bad habit that iOS developer wrp1002 hopes to break with the release of a new and free jailbreak tweak dubbed GrowingBadges.

Just as the tweak’s somewhat conspicuous name implies, GrowingBadges causes your apps’ missed notification badges to grow as the number of missed notifications for those apps increases.

For example, while a notification badge representing 1-10 missed notifications may appear regularly sized, a badge representing 70 missed notifications would be nearly 50% larger, while a badge representing more than 3,400 missed notifications takes up almost the entire app icon, as depicted in the screenshot example above.

The concept is sort of neat, as it offers a gentle nudge for procrastinators who like to let their missed notification counts grow to open those apps and read them.

The developer took special care to make the tweak configurable, so users will find a dedicated preference pane in the Settings app post-installation where they can set up a few different options to their liking:

Things you can do here include:

  • Toggle GrowingBadges on or off on demand
  • Limit the badge size so it doesn’t get too large
  • Configure the maximum number of notifications (used for the limiting option above)
  • Reset all settings to their defaults
  • Respring your device to save any changes

Obviously, if you let your notifications get out of hand, then the limit badge size option might come in handy for so that you can still see your app icon(s) under the notification badge(s). Fortunately, the developer thought about this case scenario and built in this safety net.

If you think that GrowingBadges might help you kick the bad habit of letting missed notifications stack up, then you can download the tweak for free from wrp1002’s personal repository via your favorite package manager app. The tweak supports jailbroken iOS & iPadOS 14 devices and is open source on the developer’s GitHub page.

Those not already taking advantage of wrp1002’s personal repository can add it to their package manager app of choice by using the URL provided below:
