Apple has filed for dozens upon dozens of California-themed trademark applications for macOS names over the years, some of which like Yosemite, Sierra and Mojave were indeed used for major macOS releases. And today at the WWDC 2020 keynote, software engineering chief Craig Federighi announced that the official code-name for macOS 10.16 is “Big Sur”.
This is the same name that reliable Twitter leaker @l0vetodream floated earlier this morning. In fact, some folks thought Apple will pick one of the four unused names whose trademark applications have remained active to this date: Mammoth, Monterey, Rincon and Skyline.
It’s unclear whether or not Apple might have recently filed for the Big Sure trademark that no one was able to spot. No matter how you look at it, “Big Sur” it is so start familiarizing yourself with it as this is the macOS name that you’ll be hearing a lot in the next year or so.

For our non-US readers, Big Sur is a rugged stretch of California’s central coast located between Carmel and San Simeon, bordered to the east by the Santa Lucia Mountains and the west by the Pacific Ocean. Aside from state parks for hiking, camping and beachcombing, the area is traversed by a state route featuring winding turns and seaside cliffs.
