After quite a long time trying, T-Mobile and Sprint finally completed their merger earlier this year. It’s all been surface-level changes since then, but the more sweeping changes will start rolling out later this summer.
That’s according to Fierce Wireless (via The Verge), which reports that the new T-Mobile will start wiping away the Sprint brand beginning this summer. That’s coming from T-Mobile’s new CEO, Mike Sievert, who relayed the information on a recent investor event. Apparently the initial plan was to have all this start happening sooner, but it got “delayed”, and now the Sprint brand will start getting wiped away from marketing materials and retail buildings this summer.
On the consumer side, “we’ve always been planning a summer timeframe,” Sievert said. “With COVID-19, we moved it out into the mid-summer instead of the early summer, and this is when we will essentially be advertising one flagship postpaid T-Mobile brand as well as operating a unified fleet of retail. The retail piece is why we slowed down just a little bit.”
Things haven’t been exactly smooth sailing for Sprint customers following the merger’s finalization. Some customers have noted that their 5G-enabled devices, which typically work on Sprint’s network (in supported areas, of course) are no longer working as they should. This is due to the fact that T-Mobile and Sprint are currently in the process of merging their networks, which will inevitably lead to some bumps in the road along the way.
And it all leads towards even bigger things for the new T-Mobile. The company has already articulated its big plans following the merger, all part of the “5G for Good” initiative.
Still, Sprint customers should not see any major changes to their bill, or plan, for the near future. So that has to be a bit of good news, even as we’re about to start waving goodbye to the Sprint brand.
