The Home screen is something you interface with every single day. That said, wouldn’t it be nice if Apple allowed you to do more with it than simply change the wallpaper image and move the app icons around?
If you’re onboard with the aforementioned idea, then you’ll probably take a liking to a new jailbreak tweak called IconTweak by iOS developer ichitaso. With it, you can customize your Home screen’s app icons in new and exciting ways.
As you might’ve discerned already in the screenshot examples above, IconTweak lets you:
- Rename any app icon to anything you want
- Set a custom icon badge of any value
- Copy the app’s Bundle ID
- Open the app in the Filza file browser
- Open the app’s data in the Filza file browser
- And more…
To use IconTweak, you’ll simply swipe on the app icon in question or tap on it while your handset is in Home screen editing mode (which we commonly refer to as ‘jiggle’ mode). Once the prompt appears, you can choose from the list of options and go from there. If you opt to change an app’s name or set a custom badge, for example, you’ll receive an input prompt where you can enter your preferred value.
For those interested, here’s a demonstration video of IconTweak in action, which has been graciously provided by the developer:
After you install IconTweak, you’ll find a dedicated preference pane in the Settings app where you can configure it any way you’d like:
Here, you can:
- Toggle IconTweak on or off on demand
- Choose how you invoke IconTweak:
- Swipe up on the app icon
- Swipe down on the app icon
- Tap on the app icon while in Home screen editing mode
- Choose which items appear in the IconTweak menu:
- Rename app
- Set custom badges
- Copy Bundle ID
- Open in Filza
- Open app
- Reset settings to their defaults
In my honest opinion, the best features included in IconTweak are renaming apps and setting custom badges. These two options can be used to create some particularly interesting appearances. The rest of the features seem, at least to me, superfluous.
