On the universe of negativity Apple now lives in…

Stop me if you've already heard this one: Apple is doomed, doomed, DOOMED. Didn't you get the memo? Investors have been displeased with Apple's slowing growth since the dawn of time, saying iPhones and other Apple gadgets ought to be even more expensive than they already are.

Analysts think the company is embarked on a “decade-long malaise” because it supposedly “lacks the courage to lead the innovation”. And biased media with its collapsing ad revenues continue churning out click-friendly headlines which accuse Apple of anything you could think of, from falling behind Google in artificial intelligence to Donald Trump winning the U.S. presidential election.

I guess that's one way of looking at things.

Here's what Apple's world looks like from my vantage point.

Analyst: Apple poised for a “decade-long malaise” as it “lacks the courage to lead innovation”

Apple's reliance on the iPhone is well documented, but that didn't stop analysts at Oppenheimer from issuing an unusually scathing investor memo describing “strategic issues” at the Cupertino firm.

In the note, a copy of which was obtained by Business Insider, analyst Andrew Uerkwitz and his team charge Apple for being too reliant on the iPhone and headed in the wrong direction, saying the company “lacks the courage to lead the next generation of innovation”.

Apple issues iOS 10.2 beta 5 to developers

Apple on Friday released a fifth beta of iOS 10.2 (build 14C89) to its registered developers enrolled in the Apple Developer Program. The updated beta software can be deployed over-the-air through Settings → General → Software Update on an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad which has installed a prior iOS 10.2 beta and an appropriate configuration profile. The full installer can be downloaded from Apple's dedicated portal for developers at developer.apple.com.

Apple: unexpected iPhone 6s battery shutdowns caused by a manufacturing issue

iPhone 7 battery

Two weeks ago, Apple issued a global battery replacement program to address a problem where some iPhone 6s handsets manufactured between September and October 2015 may unexpectedly shut down (see if your phone is eligible for a free battery via Apple's web tool).

While the company originally did not say why these devices are shutting down when the battery indicator drops below the 30 percent mark, MacRumors points us to a message posted in a support document on Apple's website in China which blames the problem on a manufacturing issue.

Apple is switching App Store pricing from USD to regional currencies in 9 countries

Apple's emailed its registered developers to inform them of some upcoming App Store pricing policy changes in Egypt, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Tanzania and Vietnam.

No longer will prices of paid downloads on these local App Stores be shown in US dollars. According to the communique, the App Store in these markets will now show prices of apps and In-App Purchases in their domestic currency.

iOS 10.1.1 bug allows researchers to bypass Activation Lock protection on iPhone and iPad

Back in November, India-based security researcher Hemanth Joseph discovered a bug in iOS 10.1 which permitted him to bypass Apple's anti-theft Activation Lock feature by entering an excessively long string of characters in the Wi-Fi setup text fields.

Apple has patched the flaw in iOS 10.1.1 but now, as noted by SecurityWeek, researchers at Vulnerability Lab have managed to find another method of bypassing Activation Lock protection on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS 10.1.1 and they posted video evidence to prove it.

How to hide specific mounted volumes from your Mac’s desktop

We've already covered how to completely prevent partitions from mounting under macOS, but sometimes you want a partition mounted and ready to use but still want the benefit of it not cluttering up your desktop. For example, many people want their Time Machine partition constantly mounted and backing up throughout the day but don't need it to be visible at all.

Finder's preferences allow for hiding all volumes from the desktop but offer no control on a volume-by-volume basis. Therefore, we'll show you how to use the Terminal to hide mounted volumes on a case-by-case basis.

iHeartRadio launches two on-demand subscription tiers in beta

iHeartRadio started out in April 2008 as a simple Internet radio service at the website iheartmusic.com before becoming both a music recommendations system and a radio network that aggregates content from hundreds of local radio stations across the U.S. On Thursday, the company stepped into on-demand streaming with a pair of subscription tiers, launching in beta, that let listeners create playlists from tracks, listen to music offline, play songs in any order, skip tracks and more.
