A Periscope app is being developed for the new Apple TV

I think that there’s enough smoke to state with confidence that a new Apple TV will be launched tomorrow, and it’ll bring with it an SDK, which in turn means third-party apps on your TV screen.

As expected, we’ve yet to hear any developers go on record to state that they are in the process of making an app for Apple’s soon-to-be-released set top box. But TechCrunch’s Josh Constine has it on good authority that Twitter-owned Periscope, a live streaming app that allows users to broadcast from anywhere using their phone, is secretly building an app for the Apple TV.

According to TechCrunch’s source, the Periscope App for Apple TV “will allow users to watch live streams on their television that are broadcasted from Twitter’s Periscope app.”

Although the source didn’t divulge exact details on what the app would do, chances are it will work similarly to Periscope’s website, which allows viewers to passively watch streamed content.

You will likely be able to launch the Periscope app and view popular streams, replays, or search for specific streams. Depending on how extensive the cooperation is between the iPhone and Apple TV, it may even be possible to watch a live stream on the iPhone, and hand it off to be watched on the Apple TV without skipping a beat.

TechCrunch says that the Periscope Apple TV app may be previewed during tomorrow’s event, but they didn’t have specifics and Twitter representatives didn’t respond to inquiries before the post went live.

It’s highly likely that quite a few of the more high profile developers already have their hands on at least some preliminary information needed to develop apps for the Apple TV. After all, Apple needs to be able to showcase some of the things that are possible with the Apple TV if it plans on launching an SDK. I think that Periscope is as good of a candidate as any for showing off what the Apple TV can do.

Would you enjoy the possibility of watching Periscope live streams from the comforts of your living room couch? What types of apps do you hope to see demonstrated at tomorrow’s big event?
