Rumor: iPhone 7 has a thinner Lightning port, flush camera and stereo speakers

The fairly reliable Japanese blog Mac Otakara today shared some new details pertaining to Apple’s iPhone 7 refresh, which we’re expecting around its usual September timeframe.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Mac Otakara says that the next iPhone will be 1mm thinner than the current iPhone 6s, which measures 7.1mm in depth, making the new phone the same 6.1mm thickness as the sixth-generation iPod touch.

Somewhat surprisingly, the iPhone 7 won’t be waterproof after all and should also incorporate a thinner Lightning port. The camera bulge on the back will be gone because the phone’s iSight camera is now flush with the chassis. Oh, and the new iPhone will come outfitted with stereo speakers—for the first time in iPhone history.

In addition to a flush camera, there will be no antenna bands across the rear of the device, the site claims. As for a thinner Lightning port, Mac Otakara explains that only the cutout is smaller so the port itself will remain fully compatible with current Lightning cables, meaning you won’t have to buy any adapters to use your existing Lightning accessories on the new phone.

The upcoming iPhones won’t be waterproof because Apple has opted to reuse the current model’s aluminum alloy, meaning the iPhone 7 should be as water resistant as the iPhone 6s. Using the same material might also mean that the iPhone 7 is unlikely to look fundamentally different from its predecessor.

Last but not least, the site writes that the regular iPhone 7 won’t have dual cameras, as rumored, but has left open the possibility that such a feature could make an appearance in the iPhone 7 Plus. A Chinese website yesterday claimed a dual-camera iPhone 7 Plus will be marketed as ‘iPhone 7 Pro’.

And now, aquick look at the thickness of several iOS devices:

  • iPod touch 6th generation — 0.24 inch (6.1 mm)
  • iPad Air 2 — 0.24 inch (6.1 mm)
  • iPhone 6 — 0.27 inch (6.9 mm)
  • iPhone 6 plus — 0.28 inch (7.1 mm)
  • Original iPhone — 0.46 inch (11.6 mm)

In other words, the iPhone 7 should be almost half as thick as the original iPhone.

Last September, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in a note to clients that the next iPhone will be iPod touch-thin.

Wow finally stereo this will change the game oh wait..

  • babiloe

i prefer larger battery. new lightning? maybe because anyone now can produce it? oh so apple…

    • Did you read the article?

      • tiltdown

        For sure he didn’t

  • Ashutoshkhurana5

Off topic . But soundhound’s hound is available in the app store.

  • :D

The names might start to get confusing

  • diggitydang

    Very underwhelmed… Hope this isn’t true…

  • JayDee917

So the highlight of the new iPhone is that it’s thinner, removed the headphone jack but has stereo speakers?

Thinner means smaller battery, removed head jack means reduced functionality, and who the hell cares about stereo speakers?!

Give me a slightly thicker iPhone with a huge battery, waterproof casing, fast wireless charging, edge to edge AMOLED qHD screen, smaller bezels, and 32GB of storage for the entry level iPhone 7.

Basically I’m asking for the Samsung S7 but made by Apple and running iOS.

    • Rowan09

Thinner does not mean smaller battery where did you get that from?

      • JayDee917

It doesn’t always have to mean smaller battery but it usually does.

And it definitely does mean it won’t have a significantly larger battery, which is what I was hoping for.

    • Valinor

No headphone jack is also bullshit. They wont remove it. Especially if the phone is gonna be as thin as the ipod touch. It still fits.
I guess what you can expect from the iphone 7 is that its thinner (OMG) a new processor(as always), better graphics (as always) stereo speakers (that are useless because they are still on the bottom) and flush camera with Very slighty improved photos. (offcourse Apple will say:OMG look how thin the camera is.)
      And omg no antenna bands!!!

I feel ya, I also want a Samsung s7 with IOS. Was planning to switch but played around with the s7 edge yesterday at the store. Dont like the feel of the OS (even though I actually do like touchwiz over stock android.)
      And the colors suck.
White feels cheap especially next to my white iphone 6.
      Gold is hideous.
Silver/chrome at first look, looks awesome but when you get used to it its annoying.
And the black looks awesome on all videos and photos, but in real life it looks like its been made of plastic. And omg the smudges everywhere.

So its gonna be another year of Apple disappointment.

      • JayDee917

I’m pretty confident that they’re going remove the headphone jack. Basically every credible leak/rumor released supports the notion that it’s being removed.

It’s okay, though. Apple will happily sell you a lightning to 3.5mm adapter for just $19.99

      • Valinor

Lol, 19,99 is still way to cheap.
Well its still early in the year so i think the no headphone jack leaks/rumors are not true.
I mean the last few years there were always rumors about a resolution bumb and more ram. Those also never happened. (Except for iphone 6s ram finally getting 2gb. But took them long enough)

      • Benedict

You can try a LG G5 instead. It has a unibody but a interchangeable battery etc. I will get it over the S7 too. I don’t like the glas back which glides from every surface. Also the G5 has iOS-like no app drawer by default (it can be turned on in the settings though)

    • therealjjohnson

Before we talk about the highlight of the phone, let’s let the phone come out first.

    • Benedict

If this is the case, it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for me because iOS is not too different from android.

  • tariq

I think S7 wins my vote this year tbh

    • Rowan09

How when we haven’t even seen the 7? The S7 didn’t add anything new besides always on display and brought back the SD card due to terrible space management on the S6 and camera upgrade (when I watched the unpacked event they didn’t mention it went back to 12mp, when they were always bragging about mp’s). They had a 3000mAH in the S6 Active and it was also water resistant.

      • iPhoneWINS

        It sound boring

      • Rowan09

So should the S7 if that’s the case is all I’m saying. We’ll have to wait and see because I don’t know what exactly would make a cellphone “not boring” anymore.

      • tariq

I like the 360 back design. Waterproof is big deal for me, that’s why Ive been a Sony fan for so long. And SD slot is much better than cloud space, and safer. Wireless charging is alright. And always on display will reduce the damaging buttons for some ppl.

      • Rowan09

It’s not waterproof and why is SD cards better than the cloud? If your saying it’s harder to get information from a SD card I understand, but SD cards can only hold media on the S7. Always on display won’t reduce anything because I’ve been fixing Samsung devices since the Note 2 and I’ve never had to fix a messed up power button.

      • tariq

IP67 is waterproof (30 minutes of submerged water). SD just for security reasons and makes other users easier too… And a lot of ppl turn there phone on and off just to see the time, multiple times a day, which can affect the buttons after some time.

      • Rowan09

I understand but people don’t keep there phones that long anymore to worry about button failures. I still own a Note 2 and nothing is wrong with it and I let my 1 year play with it all the time.

    • Alexander Figueroa

      Yup thinking the same

  • h4nd0fg0d

If it retains those god awful bezels, full-on failure.

    • JayDee917

According to the same report, it will have the same height and width as the 6. So unless they’re making the screen bigger, which is highly unlikely, it’s going to retain those god awful bezels.

  • Alexander Figueroa

Bahh I’m getting tired of Apple.

    • iPhoneWINS

Exactly .. apple is very boring now but no one wants too admit it..

    • tariq

I wouldn’t say Apple is boring, just the iPhone. But that’s just me

  • David Nowicki

LOL at the battery life this phone will have. WTF is the obsession with super thin phones ? I hate Touchwiz, but gotta give credit to Samsung for actually making their next gen phone thicker for a much bigger battery, and early word is the S7 Edge gets phenomenal battery life.

What kind of battery life will this 7 Plus get ?

    • Rowan09

The S7 Edge has the same battery as the S6 Active and the battery life wasn’t amazing on my S6 Active. It was the same as my 6+. They always say the same thing, but until you use it for real world usage, you won’t know.
