New report claims we may not see Apple Watch 2 in March

Apple Watch Edition back Wired 002

Don’t get your hopes up for new Apple Watch hardware in March, reports TechCrunch. Citing several sources with knowledge of the company’s plans, the outlet said on Friday that it believes the oft-rumored March unveiling is a bit too soon for Watch 2.0.

The scoop goes directly against a recent report that the second-gen Apple Watch is set to begin production later this month. It also contradicts a December report from the reliable 9to5Mac, which said that Apple had been planning a Watch event for March.

I’m not so sure that we’ll be seeing it that early. Several things that I’ve heard (from several sources) indicate to me that we won’t see a new hardware model of the Apple Watch in March. Design partnerships, accessories, that kind of thing maybe but not a “Watch 2.0” with a bunch of new hardware features like a camera. I could be wrong, of course, but I’ve heard enough to put it out there.

The report goes on to point to lack of supply chain movement as evidence that a new Apple Watch isn’t nearing production—several Apple suppliers have warned of soft earnings. It also notes that there hasn’t been any “major action” from Watch software teams.

That said, it still sounds like a March event is likely. The iPad Air 2 is long overdue for a refresh, and smoke for a 4-inch iPhone continues to billow. Apple could then save the Watch for September, giving it more breathing room and attention ahead of the holidays.

  • Err… why did you think it would be released in March?? Apple never release anything early. Apple Watch 2 will be released the same period Apple Watch 1 was, which is end of April.

    • Blip dude

Umm actually, they don’t have to release in April, they can do it when it pleases them. See iPhone: 1st gen – 4th gen: Late June/Early July release, 5th Gen: Mid-October release, 6th Gen – Present – Mid-September release.

      See iPad: 1st Gen – 3rd Gen: Early/Mid-March Release, 4th Gen – Present: Late October/Early November release.

The point is, I wouldn’t trust history in Apple’s case. They can just as easily release an iPad Air 3 tomorrow just as likely as they can release it in Fall.

      • Apple will not release Apple Watch 2 earlier than late April. I knew that a year ago.

The change in release date for the iPhone was due to the Japanese tsunami.

    i cried a little

    • My first gen Apple watch did not. It wants to last for more than a year before being replaced lol.

  • Can we stop with rumormill reporting? I mean who really cares when it gets released? There’s nothing anyone can do about it until then.

This is why I wasn’t hellbent on grabbing a watch the first time I heard it. It’s obvious they would make another, but I thought the first one was a good step in the right direction. The second or third watch would bring more to the table for the user, and the first Apple Watch felt like a test model for early to late adapters to the device. If they pushed them every 2 years it would have been a better idea, but a watch a year makes me think of those who don’t update their iPads each year.

I recievied my apple watch Christmas 2015 as a gift. Even though i use it often i would’nt be tempted to by another Atleast this year apple watch 3 maybe depending on what they change i’m waiting on a round apple watch

  • Yes it is, No it isn’t, Yes it is, No …… Just wait, let go, there will come one (or second one) one day…

  • Xee

Couldn’t care less if it was never released tbh. Zero interest in Apple Watch.

    • Me

      ok

I would hope for a later release. I’d like an announcement at WWDC and a launch within following months. I like to have the latest and greatest, but my watch is still fairly new to me and I’m not ready to shell out more cash.
