Siri iOS 9

Remember the invitation that Apple sent out to invitees for tomorrow’s iPhone 6s event? The invitation contained the phrase “Hey Siri, give us a hint.”

According to the Apple Insider’s Mikey Campbell, this phrase alludes to a brand new feature shipping with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus—always-on “Hey Siri” functionality.

“Hey Siri” is a function that first debuted in iOS 8, which allows you to invoke Siri hands-free using only your voice. The only catch is that your device has to be plugged in and charging to take advantage of the feature. If Apple Insider’s report is true, then the iPhone 6s will be able to use Hey Siri functionality in an untethered fashion.

Since having an always-on Siri proves to be a hinderance to good battery life, Apple requires that your device be charging for Hey Siri to work on current-gen hardware. The addition of always-on Hey Siri functionality leads us to believe that Apple has additional hardware built into the new iPhone’s specifically designed to work around the issue of battery life.

Currently, some Android phones allow for always-on voice search functionality, but this is generally made possible by means of a special voice activation chip that allows the device to maintain decent battery life. If Apple is using a similar strategy with the iPhone 6s, then that means that always-on Hey Siri will likely remain an exclusive to the new iPhones.

I’ve always been a fan of Hey Siri, but have to admit that the charging stipulation severely limits its usefulness. If Apple has figured out a way to bring us untethered Hey Siri access, then this will be a huge win for iPhone users.

What do you think? Would you enjoy Hey Siri more if it could be used without having to be connected to a power source?

If this could be done without hurting battery life that’s awesome although I’d like for them to take it a step further and allow “Hey Siri” to be able to only respond to the owners voice.

  • ebernet

Yes, I would like this feature, and I mentioned it to people the day the “Hey Siri” invites went out. I was surprised this was not picked up sooner…

  • The new iPhones do have two separate microphones on their charging ports this could be part of the reason… can’t wait til tomorrow to find out..

  • Tony Trenkle Jr.

I thought this was an iOS 9 feature? I heard some rumor about that.

    • James G

Was in an early beta (1 I think) and then removed in later betas.

      • Tony Trenkle Jr.

Maybe it was. I was never on the beta.

  • Rook HD

I hope this feature is exclusive on the 6s and set the 6s apart from the current 6. And it’s very likely so since they probably implement a special chip for this task.

  • AOGV

Already have “UntetheredHeySiri” tweak. But still pretty cool it could potentially be a stock feature

    • If I’m not mistaken, it’s the same exact feature and the tweak just prematurely enables it as it’s already in the software.

I have it as well. Haven’t noticed any battery drain, either. Love it.

  • Trevnics

For some reason my iPhone 6 Plus running on the latest iOS 9 beta already has this ‘hey Siri’ feature without being connected to power. Maybe because I was jailbroken in the past? Anyways, weird..

    • mahe

If you had installed “UntetheredHeySiri”, didn’t disable it and didn’t make a clean install of the beta (used a backup), it got carried over.

  • askep3

    HECK YEAH!

And as another user mentioned, it would be amazing if it would only respond to the owners voice!

  • Sir.Rhommi

I really wish Siri didn’t require an Internet connection to enable timers, text people, & toggle settings… THAT would be an untethered Siri worthy of some hype

  • If this is true I hope there will be a kill switch since “Hey Siri” is just too inaccurate and triggers far too often when it shouldn’t.

  • ShawnTXDFW

Yet another tweak stolen from the JB community. I do hope Apple does include this. I’m JB and have this tweak installed and it’s always on. Siri is always there for me, even if she doesn’t do everything I ask of her. 😉

    • @sexyhamthing

uhhuh, JB didnt really have it first

    • johnsm

      “stolen”… stop being dramatic

  • Mattoligy

That sounds cool, but Siri on an Apple TV with always on Hey Siri, that would be sick.

  • 3vmike

This feature is what will keep me using the iPhone. For a few years now, I’ve seen my Moto X wielding friends use this functionality with great results. I’m eager to acquire that kind of convenience, especially from a company who has told me that they are concerned about my privacy and seam to be doing everything it can to protect it.

  • Keith

I had a feeling this would come. Apple probably been working on a special chip or something part of the a9.

  • iPhoneWINS

    hmmmmmmm

  • Guy

Why can’t this be done on iPhone 6 & 6 Plus?

    • White Michael Jackson

      $$$$$$
      That’s why!!!

      • Guy

        True

  • Kevin Osborne

I swear in the last commercial it looked like the guy used Hey Siri without his phone being plugged in, but maybe not? If they officially announced it during the keynote, I may have missed it since I’m watching at work. Anyone??
