Apple TV gains NBC Sports Live Extra channel

Apple TV in Hand

Apple’s $69 set-top box has gained yet another content source with Monday’s addition of the official television channel from NBC Sports Live Extra. It arrived just in time for Saturday’s 141st Kentucky Derby and during the first round of the National Hockey League’s playoffs.

NBC Sports Live Extra for Apple TV, much like the existing iOS app, delivers “thousands of live sporting events that air on NBC, NBCSN and Golf Channel,” in addition to live video, at no cost.

No cable or satellite subscription is required to enjoy some content, but you’ll need to create an account with the NBC Sports in order to take full advantage of its features. Also, NBC Sports Live Extra users may want to provide their cable subscription details in order to enjoy the vast majority of the more than 3,000 live stream events per year.

Today’s addition of NBC Sports is especially interesting in light of a somewhat rocky relationship between Apple and NBC’s parent company, Comcast.

Content available through the channel is distilled into the following categories: Featured, Live & Upcoming, Highlights, Replays and Sports categories.

According to NBC:

In addition to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and Triple Crown, Live Extra streams all live sports content televised by NBC, NBCSN and Golf Channel, including: the Summer and Winter Olympics; Sunday Night Football and NBC’s NFL pre-season and post-season coverage; NHL regular-season games; the PGA TOUR, including the FedExCup Playoffs, and the LPGA; the Premier League; studio content surrounding many of the aforementioned properties; original programming such as The Dan Patrick Show and Men In Blazers; and much more.

Again, “the vast majority of live streaming” will only be available to authenticated cable, satellite or telco customers via TV Everywhere.

The new channel addition adds up to the Apple TV’s growing list of sport content sources, which include apps like WatchESPN, MLB.TV, NBA, NFL Now and many others.

NBC’s Sports Live Extra app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad is available free of charge in the App Store.

The app streams NHL Regular-Season and Stanley Cup Playoff games, PGA TOUR, U.S. Open (golf), Notre Dame Football, French Open (tennis), Premier League (soccer), Formula One, IndyCar and Triple Crown horse racing to your iOS device.

It’s worth mentioning that NBC Sports Live Extra for iOS hosts digital-only content not televised by NBC, NBCSN or Golf Channel, including some Premier League matches through Extra Time and select motorsports content.

NBC Sports is available to Apple TV owners in the United States.
