Music App iOS 8.4

If you’ve yet to go hands-on with the just-released iOS 8.4 and the redesigned Music app, then I recommend checking out our video walkthrough. In this video, we step through many of the new changes, from both a visual and functionality standpoint.

I’ve been playing with the new stock Music app on iOS 8.4 for the last two hours, and I have to say I really like it. My favorite new feature is the Up Next queuing, followed closely by the mini player that allows you to keep tabs on the currently playing song while anywhere in the interface.

Be sure to check out our iOS 8.4 release post for a full textual run down of all the new items. What’s your favorite new feature?

  • Okhoo

    Excited

  • Kowloonyou

    sweet.

  • Mr Hopscotch

Looks nice! I hope it turns out good.

  • Lance Baker

I’m loving it. There a couple bugs here and there but that’s to be expected. Really loving this redesign. I expected it for iOS 9 but Apple seems to be really pushing major changes lately. Perhaps to offset that iOS 9 will mostly be fixing bugs and increasing overall performance.

    • or maybe because iOS 9 will only work on iPhone 6 and 6 plus and later.

      • Lance Baker

I really doubt that. They still sell the 5s and 5c.

      • they also still sell the iPad mini 1… I doubt that it will have iOS 9 support as the internals are exactly the same as in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.. unless Apple makes history and support iPad 2 and 4S aswell.

  • Jonathan

What’s the background music in the video? I really like it.

  • Jackson Grong

    What abaut the ipad interface!?

    • Kyle Warwick-Mathieu

iPad interface? You’re kidding right? WHO uses the music app on an iPad? I sure don’t!

      • Rupinder

        I do.

      • justme

me too.. meanwhile I browsing safari, or chat with someone..

      • Merman123

I do. Actually one of the few things I use it for lol.

      • George

Then why the hell would it be available for iPad dumbass.

      • Anthony

        I do

      • al7oot

        Check out MacRumors

      • I have my iPad on a stand that’s connected to my Bose bluetooth speaker.

      • Kr00

I don’t know who the bigger moron is, you, or the guy that upvoted you.

  • MrJohnBlaze

i like everything except the now playing interface and the touch targets on the scrub forward or backward slider are off

    • jp2002

The scrubber is so buggy since iOS 7.

  • Dammit, I want this now!

  • Barbie_Klaus

Looks nice!!! About time they added the up next feature to stock. I like the new design too.

  • Landroverz7

Whats the interface like in landscape/horizontal mode?

    • coLin

      it is awesome

      • Adrayven

ok, as far as descriptions go, enthusiastic, and totally useless.. lol

description or screen cap would help in horizontal… I’ve hated album view for years. Not that I don’t like album art.. I love the art.. but not if I cannot control my dang music because of it..

when I drive, I leave my phone horizontal in it’s car dock.. I have to pull phone, turn it over just to change music.. very annoying.

    • That’s my big question. I’d like to be able to play my music while it’s in landscape mode, but that album view is nearly useless.

    • QuarterSwede

It crashes when going to landscape currently.

      • John

        Not for me.

      • QuarterSwede

Could be a difference in devices. Could you take a screenshot please.

      • John

Sure, but it won’t show much.

At least for the iPhone, the app stays in portrait mode.

On the iPad though, that has landscape mode.

      • QuarterSwede

Oh I was talking about the iPhone. The iPad’s UI is super sparse at the moment.

    • The Guy

      Exactly…

    • John

      It doesn’t do landscape.

      Portrait mode only.

  • Cole Mahoney

I signed up for the public beta and I only got to enroll my Mac. How to I enroll my iOS devices?

    • coLin

it’s not a public beta like on the Mac. you have to have a dev account for iOS

      • Cole Mahoney

I know, I use public and developer betas. On apples website I signed up but the iOS public betas but download was not and option only for OS X

      • coLin

there is no public beta for iOS as far as I know

      • Cole Mahoney

I found I link for the public iOS beta and got the feedback app but get an error.

      • coLin

that is not PUBLIC beta. it’s just beta for developers. I think I payed like 8 bucks a year for that. google it

      • Siddharth Desai

He is right. There is an iOS public beta program (just like OS X). However, unlike OS X beta program, iOS is invite-only. To answer your follow up question, there is no way to request an invite.

      • coLin

oh yeah, you are right. I completely forgot about it.
There were like 1,000 invites and I was actually lucky to be one of them but since I’m jailbroken I forgot about it lol

      • Cole Mahoney

Also here is the public beta profile I found

      • Nate Peterson

I think it just isn’t public yet. Like how the 8.3 beta was already a few updates in when it went public. They just have developers test it first.

  • Axl Feliciano

OMFG Apple stole the tweak UpNext and they cry when Samsuck copies them lol

    • gittlopctbi

LOL, no Apple doesn’t complain, the Fanboys do.

    • Sleaka J

Adding a song to an Up Next queue has been available on desktop iTunes for nearly a couple of years now. Much longer than UpNext.

If you didn’t think it was eventually going to arrive on the stock iOS Music app, then you’re an imbecile.

But based on your comment, I get the sneaky suspicion you already are.

    • Kr00

Seriously? What universe have you been living in? Up next has been in iTunes for quite a while. Best you educate yourself before mouthing off.

  • Julioz

What about song lyrics? Where can I see them when I’ve added them from iTunes?

    • Kr00

If it works like it does now, lyrics should show when you tap the artwork while the song is playing.

  • QuarterSwede

Great overview of the iPhone app. The only other one I could find was of the iPad app and that one looks sadly sparse.

  • Nirvana

what about “make available offline” option?

    • coLin

it’s there alright, but they just changed the name of it. it’s now called: ‘Buy’

    • John

      What about it?

  • Hopefully this new look feed over onto the Podcasts app. It’s currently lackluster.

  • Rodney Coleman

I’m already on it… Pretty nice!!!

  • background music tho

  • Ecigsandcoffee

This is sweet, dont get me wrong. But ill stick with Aria and my jailbreak.

    • iPhoneWINS

      jailbreak IOS > regular IOS

  • StarShootex

Awesome! Though I think they should just have either ‘Play Next’ or ‘Add to Up Next’, not both, cause they pretty much do the same thing.

    • Kr00

No, they aren’t the same thing. One lets you play a song right after the one thats currently playing, the other allows you to add multiple songs to the list as you go.

  • InfinitePlusOne

    What’s an iTunes Radio?

    • Furrnace

Really? Are you actually being serious?

      • InfinitePlusOne

Been bloody waiting however long they released it. Still no sign of it in the UK

    • Never heard of it here in Canada aswell… didn’t know iTunes had a radio station. 😉

  • Alex

    Pro tip:
You could upload and post your videos on Vimeo too, so folks like me can watch your reviews and news at work during lunchtime or some 😛

  • Michael Gargett

No sign of any Genius playlists anywhere within the app…

  • i like the it looks clean. Its about time that they hit on a new better looking interface.

  • iPhoneWINS

    get ready for IOS 8.4.1

  • RichysDisqusName

Are you able to use swipe to control playback yet?

  • What about Lockscreen features for Music playback? for example, does it add option to shuffle music right from the lockscreen or do you still have to unlock?

    • John

      Still have to unlock.

Could always ask Siri to shuffle.

      • Yeah.. but I mostly listen to music on the subway train which has no signal for internet and SIRI is dead when that happens…and I don’t see myself in the bus saying Shuffle or Repeat outloud…seems like a simple feature to add yet it has been overlooked for 8 years by Apple designers.

  • Gregory D Foster

I haven’t opened the stock music app since I got Spotify years ago. Good to hear they’re keeping up with it though!

  • Vignesh Rajan

    The wait finally ends.

  • neoamaru

    no sign of an Equalizer…dealbreaker..
