Publisher 2K Games and developer Firaxis Games are gearing up to launch a new interstellar strategy game for Mac and Windows PCs and the iPad, Polygon said Monday.

Coming in early 2015, legendary game designer Sid Meier had a direct hand in designing Sid Meier’s Starships, a turn-based, adventure-driven interstellar strategy game in which you’ll take the role of a fleet commander after the age of the Seeding.

The player is tasked with building a planetary federation and leading their starships across the universe to defend planets against various enemies. You’re expected to grow your empire along the way and “usher in a new age of peace in the galaxy,” Firaxis said in a media release today.

The cinematic intro sequence looks exciting!

Starships will tie in with the Civilization: Beyond Earth universe as Firaxis is building cross-connectivity between the two titles to enhance the experience for those who own Beyond Earth and also buy Starships.

In addition to turn-based 4X combat, the game sports customizable starships, dynamically generated combat missions, future technologies to research and explore, a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy and exploration and much more.

Starships has been designed as a spiritual successor to Civilization: Beyond Earth, which released on Mac and Windows PCs in October 2014.

“When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth,” said Meier.

“What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars?” he continued. “What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth?”

Starships will release in Spring 2015, 2K said.

Keep your eyes peeled as we post more details as soon as they’re released.

  • Why isn’t ipad apps working on the 6+?

    • BoardDWorld

If you read it’s being released on Windows PC, Mac & iPad. It’s actually a landmark release being that a Game on iPad is launching alongside Windows PC “at the same time”. It’s likely that the iPhone 6/+ doesn’t have the performance to support it and/or the UI may be too refined for the smaller screens.

      • I didn’t meant for this game specific. I meant for every game. The screen is 5.5 so I think it will be awesome to play ipad games on the iPhone 6+

That would make a good jailbreak tweak… When the original iPad was released a few iPad specific apps did install onto iPhone.

  • I don’t know how to feel about this game. i’m a fervient admirer of the Civilization series, and I just bought this weekend Beyond Earth on steam. We’ll have to see how different is this game, I don’t think that is good to release it that soon if it’s like Beyond Earth.

This makes me laugh. Beyond Earth doesn’t even work for almost everyone that bought the game back in October last year and yet they’re pushing the next game out. 3 months not actually being able to use play the damn thing properly. DISGUSTING!
With each update (1 game update and 1 GPU update) it gets worse. Minimum requirements and pretty much recommended requirements advertised are a lie and they refuse to refund any money and then updating their “terms and conditions” just after everyone requests refunds. DISGUSTING!
I’m a big fan of Civ games but this is a complete joke. People, including me have even gone out to spend extra money to boost our computers to above the so called “recommended requirements” but still no joy. Also a really bad thing about this is that nobody has anything to say about it while all the customers are complaining. DIGUSTING!
Sorry to bring the complaint on to your blog iDB but people need to know before throwing money at these companies.
