Samsung today took the wraps off a new smartphone for its Galaxy line called the ‘Galaxy Alpha.’ The company says the handset encapsulates its new design approach, featuring a “carefully constructed” compact body with a metal frame and a solid finish.

In terms of specs, there isn’t anything too crazy under the hood. The Alpha sports a 4.7” HD Super AMOLED display, an octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and a 12MP rear camera. There’s also a fingerprint scanner on board, and a host of other sensors…

alpha 2

Here’s a rundown of the hardware: 4.7” HD Super AMOLED (1280 x 720), Octa Core (Quad 1.8GHz + Quad 1.3GHz) processor, 12MP (rear) and 2.1MP (front) cameras, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory (no SD card slot), and an 1,860 mAh battery.

The really story here is the Alpha’s all-new metal design, which some folks are saying teeters dangerously close to that of Apple’s iPhone 5/5s. The two firms have gone to court over design infringement before, although they did recently call a semi-truce.

Here’s what Samsung has to say about the new look:

Concentrating on elegant aesthetics and compact construction, Samsung has taken a fresh approach to design with the Galaxy Alpha. Created to help consumers express their unique style without sacrificing functionality, the refined Galaxy Alpha features a sophisticated design with a metal frame, elegantly curved corners and a tactile soft back cover. In addition, it is visually balanced, with the perfect contrast of both a calming, soft matte finish and an eye-catching reflection from the metal frame. At less than 7 mm thick, the Galaxy Alpha is also one of the slimmest Galaxy devices ever, and its uniquely compact construction and light weight provides consumers with maximum in-hand grip and control.

And here’s the official introduction video ‘Just Alpha’

The timing of this device is also interesting. Samsung says that the Alpha will go on sale in early September, which is right around the time Apple is expected to announce its iPhone 6, and around the same time that Samsung is believed to unveil its Note 4.

Unfortunately, there’s not much information at this time in terms of availability. Samsung hasn’t named any carrier partners for the Alpha yet, and there’s no word on pricing. We do, however, know it will come in black, white, gold, silver and blue colorways.

Oh my god a Samsung which isn’t made of plastic???

    • The back is still plastic. I think you mean “Oh my god a Samsung with a side bezel which isn’t made of plastic???”

      • R4

        Lol okay

      • GuyWithTheThings

Lol the buttons are still made of plastic

    shamsung copycat

  • Normally Id say that the side of this phone looks like the old iPhone 4 4S 5 and 5S but they put the antenna breaks on the top and bottom so I’d get shot down by Android/Samesung lovers.

  • Rayan Tawfik

It’s all about standing your phone on it’s side metal frame 😀

    • My iPhone 4 could do that, oh and my newer 5S thanks Samsung.

  • Rowan09

What exactly is this phone suppose to be?

    • Michael Edwards

An iPhone 5 substitute for people who love Android

      • Yes that exactly what this is. Slightly old modified mid frame mixed with new iPhone spec rumors.

      • Michael Edwards

Both companies appear to want to appeal to its main competitors customers. It’s not a bad thing of course, it gives us more options.

      • Except it doesn’t give us more options other than the OS. OS aside this is a clear attempt to copy the design of the iPhone 5 although I’m sure on the inside things are different. I wonder if Samsung is using the same exploding batteries they use in some of their other phones?

  • Michael Edwards

    Looks familiar… hhmm iPh…

  • CAS

Who is crazy enough to buy this?

    • Android fans who deep down want an iPhone.

      • Zack Simpson

You must admit, there are those people out there. It’s why jailbreaking an iPhone to get Android features is a thing. Likewise, it’s why phones like the HTC One M8 (and now, the Galaxy Alpha) exist.

      • Ill Admit that my phone is jailbroken and I often add some features unknowingly to have came from the Android OS and even some I know are on. I just won’t settle for a full Android device. Apples Hardware is just too darn good!!

      • Zack Simpson

I completely agree, brother! Neither is perfect and neither is worthless. They’re both great for different reasons!

    • WolfgangHoltz

All that is not so insane so they buy an Apple.

  • Donovan

Hey cool, it looks like an 5s!

    • WolfgangHoltz

      Just little better and cooler.

      • CAS

Why is it better? Why is it cooler?

Touch Wiz is the worst android skinh there is, and celebs that usually use a galaxy device is because they get paid to do it.

      • WolfgangHoltz

I would use any brand if I get paid.

  • sloanq

    STRIKING Resemblance

  • Tom

The plastic and cheap display breaks easy

    • Yes. Unfortunately Samsung will continue to producing it and using it for new devices. Even the ones that are supposed to be more durable.

    • TeChNoStyLeZ

Lol plastic is a lot more durable than metal, my s3 was falling from 1,5meters and not a single scratch, when my 5s fell from like 40cm the metal on the edge bent inwards

      • Oh so thats why cars are made from plastic instead.. Oh wait only Saturn tried that and they are discontinued now…

  • Zack Simpson

What?! So even the Galaxy Alpha has a plastic back? Hahaha I’m dying

  • Tutui Dragos Iulian

I’m not an Apple fanboy, but how can you have respect for a company that only copies from others … It’a a disgrace … 🙁

    • Jazz Bo

Well said. And I don’t care how good their phone is I would not purchase one for that reason alone. With all the money they make they can’t come up with their own stuff? Do they even have a creative department?

  • Zack Simpson

It’s like Samsung is embarrassed that they used the same ugly plastic back for the Alpha. Watch the video; they practically hide the back of the phone until the very end.

  • Qasim

    Wow they are really desperate.

  • Noah Mospan

    Wow

    Such cool

    Much innovation

  • Marcos Gonzalo

    someone know wallpaper name??? Thks!

  • Jonathan

Wow, in a way this looks a lot like the iPhone 6.. and kinda has the same specs, mostly.

    • Well for one technically it can’t look like something that isn’t out yet. Two if those iPhone 6 Rumors are true how can this squared device look like those round ones?

  • kadeem kadz Dulice

its so sad that they cant copy apple’s Home button design mehn lol… not without risking the possiblities of getting nuked from the heavens – even God would be pissed if they did that lol

  • justme

why they called ‘Alpha’? in some terms of names Alpha is before Beta, so this Alpha device is worse than a Beta device? LOL!

    • The beta will probably look like the iPhone 6. Like how this one does the 4 and 5.

    • They’ve probably called it that for exactly the reason you’ve described. Next year we will see the Samsung Galaxy Beta, the year after the Samsung Galaxy Golden Master, and then the *Samsung Galaxy Stable.

*Device comes with Android and touchwiz and as a result may not be stable.

    • WolfgangHoltz

Quote from Wikipedia “In social animals, the alpha is the individual in the community with the highest rank” So the Galaxy Alpha is the phone with highest rank. You learn new things everyday.

      • So Samsung just said F You to all the owners of their first flagship Galaxy S Series devices because this is the new flagship? I mean this is basically an S5 with the fingerprint scanner that barely works anyway. Or is it a Note 4 without the S pen? Oh darn the screen is too small to be either…

      • WolfgangHoltz

Apple do the same when they add S to the number. Evolution will not stop just because you buy something.

      • No its not really the same. The S model comes out a year later instead of a few weeks/months. The first Galaxy S was announced in 2010 not long after Apples 3G S. Only difference is Samsung always adds the S and Apple ‘S’ Always Stands for something. Speed, Siri, and Security.

      • WolfgangHoltz

“Always Stands for something. Speed, Siri, and Security”
Is just your guesses. it could be S like in Same also. Samsung have different models of their phones and if everything i true about the rumors Apple will soon have several models too. And if Apple want to be in the top level along with Samsung they need probably speed things up also. One year product cycle is something inherited from stone age. So if you always want latest model you need a big wallet.

      • Not guesses thats from Apples ‘Mouths’ itself just do some research for once. After that research the fact that Samsung has too many devices in the market and are starting to fall behind because of it. It is not a good idea to flood the market. The once a year cycle has done Apple really well every new iPhone outsold its last generation.

“So if you always want latest model you need a big wallet.” You are talking about every company here. Full price for any ‘flagship’ device is over $500. Contract is a different story because they practically give away androids.

  • DroidGuy360

“In terms of specs, there isn’t anything too crazy under the hood.”

Wow, every single spec is better than whats in any iphone. Even the new iphone 6 rumors dont stand up to the specs of this, except for the finally hd but still not full hd screen resolution.

Im not sure why samsung made this phone, but whatever. Cant wait for the note 4!!!

    • Eqwan Syafiq

Even every single spec is better than any iphone……..i can assure you iphone can win in term of speed and daily usage..

    • CAS

You could have the best hardware, yet if your os is shit it won’t matter how powerful the device is.

    • Another purpose of this device is to attempt to one up the upcoming iPhone 6’s specs. Unfortunately it wont matter because Apple does not care about having the most ram, fastest processor, highest Megapixel Camera, or highest res screen. They only care about getting the mix right for the user.

      • GuyWithTheThings

I just copied that quote. That should shut up the next fanboy I run into…

      • Be careful, they tend to turn into big babies and name callers when they don’t win.

  • Ariel

…And from afar, it still looks exactly like the old GS2

  • Chocolope Jailbreakush

Anyone got that Alpha wallpaper yet?

  • Dimitrios Pandioras

I don’t understand the hate. Looks like a decent phone. Shocking ad though lol

    • Umut Bilgiç

Because the “”new thing” is such a blatant copy of the previous iPhone models that being the new aluminium sides and the overall look.

      • Dimitrios Pandioras

Companies have been copying companies for years. This is nothing new. We should all be used to it by now. Every year it’s the same old “they’re such copy cats.” Of course they are. Because the design works. Personally, I dislike Samsung, but this phone looks pretty good. A copy? Very likely. Still nice design though.

      • Umut Bilgiç

Yep nice design. But the hate is not to the design it is to the fact that, that nice design is copied from another company.

  • Brian 

Wow! Beautiful aluminum side bezels with perfect chamfered edges, precise speaker grille cut outs with integrated cut outs for antennas. If only the iPhone…oh wait….

  • GuyWithTheThings

Seems like Samsung waits for tons of rumors concerning the new iPhone, then uses those as the basis for their new smartphones….. even though this seems like a new rendition of the iPhone 5.

    • john diaz

      Agree!

  • GuyWithTheThings

It’s also sad how Samsung markets this phone with pictures of the side of it. Because we all know the sides are better looking than the plastic back and the Touchwiz on the screen…

  • john diaz

Looks like an iPhone 5s, is samsung making fun of Apple my mocking their devices, i mean it doesn’t even make sense for them to go down on it’s current Galaxy S5 which is by far way better than the Alpha, aside from the premium feeling of the metal frame it doesn’t stand a chance against the S5. now their gonna charge even more money for this Alpha when is not as good as the s5. man these people and their ways of ripping people off. Bad move samsung!

    • WolfgangHoltz

Now when Apple start copy everyone else’s bigger screen, I think the copy discussion is over. And for ripping people off, Apple is still King.

  • philgin

check out 0:39 – the way they made the headphone jack, it looks like it has bumped and got a dent.. hehe

    • WolfgangHoltz

It’s just the shiny frame that reflect the light and trick your eyes. It’s just fabulous.

  • Stefano

    looks strikingly familiar

    • WolfgangHoltz

      Not strikingly, just little better.

  • GuyWithTheThings

Galaxy Alpha: Where we use old phone designs with nothing new. Hence the Alpha.

    • WolfgangHoltz

Yea they learn from Apple for many years.

  • loleirun

pay attention to the battery size hahahahaha what a fail_

    • Dan

      slightly better than iPhone?

      • loleirun

ios is optimized a lot better than android for the equivilent hardware, my 5s has ~1-1.5 hr more SOT than my s4 while the battery being 40% smaller, i cant imagine how bad this battery will do lol.. with these specs

  • Neo

other copycat from iPhone is coming!!!

  • TwinSon

Do your thing, Samsung. I’m not buying anything you make, but someone will.

  • I loved how Wired titled an article announcing this: “Samsung announces new iPhone” haha

  • DIesel

Definitely doesn’t look like an iphone at all. Totally innovative design by Samsung. Originality at its best. Where do they come up with this brilliance?

    • Liam Mulcahy

      I hope that was sarcasm

  • Jazz Bo

Samsung ‘If you can’t beat em, copy them. And keep copying them.’

  • Tim Farris

i am just waiting for a lawsuit
