In less than a week, Apple will be taking the stage at its WWDC keynote event to talk about OS X, iOS 8 and its new health-tracking ‘Healthbook’ app. Unsurprisingly, Samsung tried to beat them to the punch today by announcing its own healthcare initiative.

They’re calling it ‘SAMI,’ short for Samsung Architecture Multimodal Interactions, and it’s a cloud-based platform capable of reading and storing data from various sensors. It’s compatible with Samsung’s S-Health products, and completely open to developers…

Reuters has more on the event, and comments from project leader Young Sohn:

At an event at San Francisco’s SFJAZZ Center today, Samsung’s Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC) team demonstrated its open platform in a wearable wristband form factor, showing how devices based on this reference-design “blueprint” could be used to track measurements such as heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure. The company also demonstrated its open software architecture and how it could be used to collect data from a variety of sources, aggregate it and display it in a format allowing consumers to better understand what is taking place within their bodies.

“Samsung’s Digital Health Initiative provides an exciting opportunity for the brightest minds in the technology world to come together to develop the products that will, for the first time, put individuals in the driver’s seat in understanding their own health and wellness,” said Young Sohn, president and chief strategy officer, Device Solutions, SamsungElectronics. “At a time when healthcare spending is at record levels and when the number of people over the age of 60 worldwide is expected to exceed more than 1.2 billion by 2025, digital health is an incredibly important area for innovation. We believe this initiative is an essential first step and we invite developers and partners across the globe to join us in creating the technologies of the future that will help make people’s lives healthier.”

In addition to the cloud-based software, Sami also utilizes an open hardware platform. Samsung introduced a reference Sami-friendly device at the event called the Simband, which is capable of integrating the most advanced sensing technologies in the world today.

The Simband is actually pretty interesting, as it features a modular design that will allow for innovation. It won’t be sold in stores, but Samsung hopes that the project will lead to an ecosystem of third-party health products, and it’s putting $50 million toward the cause.

Again, the timing of today’s event is interesting, and it seems clear that Samsung wanted to preempt any announcements from WWDC next week. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that Apple was building a full health and fitness services platform, akin to the App Store.

Samsung! Samsung!! Samsung!!!. How many times have i called you? Are you not tired of your drama queen.? Can’t you just change strategy for once>? Its like the more you keep this game this way the more cheap you become. Please change your ways already.

    • I do; I care about true competition (regardless of brand) and hope it never ends.

      • leart

Well this is not a site for true competition fans I guess your little wrong like usual

      • Neither is a site for mindless zombie fans; it’s an Apple-related news blog, not an iTardsOnlyBlog…

typical comment for a fagdroid troll

      • Coming from the typical asinine fanboy…

      • leart

yeah since you care that i dont give a sh*t about samsung you’re a little bit brain damaged

      • Couldn’t give a rat’s a$$ if you care or not. Just answered your question of who cares…

      • leart

who asked you?, your doing your job trolling like another user called Kurt

      • Kurt

There is a troll on this site who shares my name? Cool!

      • leart

your vision of competition is to copycat apple and sell cheaper

      • Talking as-if Apple doesn’t do the same, or even worse by stealing instead of just copying.

      • leart

yeah sure anyone now knows whos copying

      • Kurt

Apple copies and Samsung copies. Why pretend one copies and the other doesn’t? What do you get by doing that? Quit being a troll, don’t be that guy.

      • Guest

Samsung also copying …Can you give us evidences about how Apple is stealing?

      • First off, I’m referring to the act of patenting stuff you copied as stealing (ie taking (another person’s property) without permission).

Second off, there are dozens of scenarios you can find here (http://bit ly/13tVo4n). The first being Apple stealing Xerox’s GUI for Mac then going after Microsoft as-if they invented the GUI…

you’re wasting your time trying to reason with these fools. most of them are just children and worse–immature fan boys.

you can talk facts til you turn blue in the face, it wont matter a bit to them.

The day Samsung innovates is the day they go out of business. They don’t know how to innovate so instead they copy, it’s in their DNA…

      • Guest

        Sounding pretty racist there dude.

      • ✪ aidan harris ✪

        I guess I’m being Samsungist 😛

      • Your Mother

name one thing, just one thing that apple has ever invented.

      • ✪ aidan harris ✪

        I’ll name four:

        iPhone, iPod, iPad, Macintosh

      • Your Mother

the iPhone is a smartphone, the iPhone is a model. the ipod is a media player model it’s not an invention. the iPad is a model, it’s a tablet not an invention and the mac is a model computer and apple did not invent computers.

I don’t belive your that stupid or if you was just playing around but seriously, name just one thing that Apple actually invented, not what already existed and they made better but what have they ever created on their own.?

      • ✪ aidan harris ✪

This is the definition of invention so by this definition Apple definitely did invent them. They also invented an awful lot of software too such as multi-touch gestures and the rubber banding scrolling and slide-to-unlock.

      • Your Mother

Your not making any valid points. Any company can make a product and call it an invention but you just proved my point–Apple hasn’t invented anything. Apple did not invent multitouch gestures, I believe LG did but maybe not entirely. You call rubber banding an invention? Lmfao, then everybody’s an inventor including myself.

Apple stole slide to unlock, I think the phone was called Noemode N1.

Please feel free to try again.

      • Any company can make a product and call it an invention

That’s right. For example, Microsoft just recently invented the recipe for the Surface Pro, they did NOT invent the kickstand, nor the detachable keyboard…hopefully they’re not patenting those.

      • He’s actually right; Apple invented those recipes, the same way Coca Cola invented the recipe for it’s popular beverage. What Apple did NOT invent are the ingredients (rectangular display, gestures, multitouch, etc.), yet they were still granted patents for those and are hypocritically suing others like they invented those ingredients.

      • whatsa2

The only patent they have that looks like it wont be over-turned is rubber-banding.
Too many people get confused between copyright/trade dress and actual patents which are technical in nature.
An implementation of others patents and tech is unique
but thats true to almost all models made as they add features in a way not done before so it has a unique style or way to interact. insightful but not inventive as a totally new idea is ie patentable..

BT LE is the tech that made remote sensors a reality
Nokia created that and is now a SEP patent with additional improvements from many others.

And if you heard this first from me it does not mean I invented this and others who ad-lib me are copiers.

    • The day you pull your head out of your behind, you’ll be able to see innovation beyond the Apple logo.

    • Kurt

Apple copied S-Health with came out with the S4. Yeah that was more than a year ago

      • Rowan09

Adding a fitness app doesn’t constitute as copying when there have been thousands on the AppStore and Playstore before the S4. Nike Fuel band was exclusive to the AppStore so if anything they copied Nike and the hundred others in the fitness field.

      • Kurt

If S-Health didn’t exist then health book wouldn’t be a stock app. Clearly Apple is copying. Nothing new as they both copy all the time. Something you never admit to.

      • Rowan09

So if Apple didn’t have iTunes Samsung wouldn’t do Hub? Apple had a deal with Nike and included Nike + way before the S4. Samsung didn’t create health apps and neither did Apple, they are just joining the community since health is a bigger focus now-a-days.

      • Kurt

Not sure what Hub is but Apple wouldn’t have done Healthbook app if there were no S-Health that’s for sure.

      • Rowan09

Prove it? So google wouldn’t have done Google Music without iTunes? S-Health is just an application pre-installed, the fact that you’re trying to compare it to something not even released is beyond understanding. S-Health was not the first health app so to give Samsung the credit or even Apple is just false.

      • Kurt

People on IDB are saying Samsung is copying Healthbook app in most posts about Apple’s app. Weird I never sen you reply to them with your “unbiasedness” saying they are wrong. Strange indeed

      • Rowan09

If I see it I would say the same thing. I’ve said it here. Samsung didn’t copy Apple with S-Health since it existed before IOS 8 and Apple didn’t copy either because Samsung did not create health apps. If you want to take it further Apple as I stated had Nike + preloaded since IOS 5 I believe and that is a health app preinstalled.

      • Kurt

Interesting, I’m gonna pay attention next time it happens which will be any day now with Samsungs and Apple’s events just days away. I’m sticking with they both copy each other often.

      • Rowan09

        Cool.

      • Your Mother

because on those apple sites you get banned or your comments get deleted.

      • Your Mother

apple didn’t invent app stores, smart phones, tablets, apps and about 2 dozen other things related to today’s mobile so what exactly is the point you’re trying to make?

      • Rowan09

Dude are you serious? A smartphone with a touchscreen interface without a stylus was made by Apple, did they invent it I don’t know but for consumer usage they get the credit. To my understanding the military had some tech that was used to make the iPhone. In regards to the App Store no one is saying the PlayStore copied the AppStore because they made an Application Store, Apple didn’t create an application store. It would be idiotic to say that the AppStore when added by Apple wasn’t a game changer. When Apple deserves credit I give it to them and when they don’t I don’t.

      • Your Mother

the iPhone was not the first touch screen smart phone without a stylus. apple did not invent touch screen or smart phones or any type of phone.

apple takes ideas, makes them better and that is a fact. what they also do is make other people’s ideas better then claim it as theirs and sue anybody whose as successful or more successful than they are. and then that’s made worse by know-nothing fan boy’s spreading lies, rumors and misinformation all over the Internet. perfect example, slide to unlock. they stole it plain and simple yet sue Samsung over it.

      • Rowan09

The LG Vue was the first phone from my knowledge without a stylus, my brother owned one and if you are trying to compare that to the iPhone or any other touchscreen phone you are delusional. No one said Apple created touch screen phones, that would just be stupid to say. Everyone takes ideas and improve on them in the tech space it’s not an Apple exclusive thing. Apple has been sued more than any other company. Samsung did copy Apple, whether it worth suing isn’t debatable anymore since they lost in court and I’m no patent expert and neither are you. Apple is making the most money out of any smartphone vendor, so if you thought it was Samsung try again. It’s funny how you keep hating on Apple, but then support Samsung which is basically the Apple of Android.

      • Kurt

Apple copied Samsung too. Funny you forget to mention that.

      • Rowan09

        With?

      • Kurt

Please. You lose credibility and prove yourself to be so biased.

      • Rowan09

        With what?

      • Kurt

5.5″ hmm where did we see that before

      • Your Mother

Ok so now we switch from Apple invented gravity to Apple makes more money than ‘X’ Samsung’s profits from mobile are only slightly behind Apple and on any given quarter Samsung has made more–I’ll provide links.

You and Apple fans don’t seem to know the difference between copying and making a competing product. For example, Apple didn’t have pull down notification shade and now they do and while it’s visually more appealing it works exactly like it has on Android for years. Apple didn’t have access to settings like Samsung now they do except it’s from the bottom and is not customizable. In and of itself there’s nothing wrong with that but let Apple put a finger print scanner on a phone followed by Samsung then it’s copying when Apple got that idea from both Samsung and LG.

The next iPad is supposed to get finger print scanner as well as a future Galaxy tablet but you and everyone on this site will say Samsung copied even though Samsung put a fingerprint scanner on a tablet years ago–just watch and see.

      • Rowan09

Good luck trying to find Samsungs profits because they don’t give numbers and before they only gave shipped figures. Most of their sales are from sub par phones not the luxury line. Who said Apple made notification center? Dude you keep trying to make up things to sound as if you are right and you’re way off. You give Apple credit for nothing and expect others to follow you when your wrong. Samsung runs on Android so stop giving them credit as if they make their own OS.

      • Kurt

Original LG Prada was shown off and came out before the original iPhone. iPhone 4, looks just like it. Apple copies all the time. Health book is a new example. Plus split screen.

      • Rowan09

Sorry. Split screen is not a Samsung thing, it’s been around on laptops and other mobile phones. The Vue or Prada doesn’t not look like the iPhone and to even try and compare the two is just crazy. The tech in both are completely different.

      • Kurt

Crazy? Every blog and their moth has compared the two. Why so biased? Does Apple pay you like Samsung pays ppl?

      • Rowan09

You have to be joking. The Prada 1 game out May 2007 and the iPhone June 2007. The Prada was the first capacitive touchscreen device but it was released the same year as the iPhone so how could they copy them in 1 month? I never hated on Samsung. You can’t give Samsung credit for something they didn’t do.

      • Kurt

Reread my comment. Apple copied the prada when they released the iPhone 4. The Prada phone was unveiled in 2006 btw

      • Rowan09

No one would confuse the Prada and the iPhone 4 but if they have similarities what does it matter? The iPhone was released in 2007 a month after the Prada so obviously they were both being worked on in the 2006. The iPhone was a secret.

      • Kurt

Again, I don’t care about the original iPhone. Just proven to you clearly Apple copies.

      • Rowan09

        Ok man.

    • Your Mother
