BlackBerry CEO calls iPhone users ‘wall huggers’ due to poor battery life

By , Mar 9, 2014

john_s_chen

BlackBerry’s newly appointed CEO John Chen isn’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers. Last month he penned an open letter regarding T-Mobile’s ‘ill-conceived’ iPhone promotion, and this past week he went after the iPhone users themselves.

Speaking at the Oasis Montgomery conference, Chen was asked for his thoughts on the surging popularity of the iPhone. And his response was ‘I call you guys wall huggers,’ suggesting the handset is unable to last a full day on a single charge…

Yahoo Finance has more on Chen’s comments from last week (via TUAW):

“Asked about Apple’s (AAPL) popularity, Chen belittled iPhone users whose batteries run down before the end of the end of the day, forcing them to search for power outlets. “I call you guys wall huggers,” he quipped.

He was also in a joking mood when asked why he left private equity firm Silver Lake to take the difficult turnaround job at BlackBerry. “I wanted to do something where I could wake up every day and worry,” he answered, adding “and I have fulfilled my dream,” as the room burst into laughter

So far, investors seem to be impressed with Chen’s plain talk and fast action. He’s already outsourced handset manufacturing to Foxconn, reducing the risk of getting stuck with unsold inventory, while focusing on enterprise customers and mobile messaging. Shares of BlackBerry have surged more than 50% since Chen took the reins in November.”

Of course you could argue that Chen is incorrect about the iPhone not lasting a full-day, and you may even be right. But the fact that he said it at all is significant. He obviously knows BlackBerry is the underdog right now, and he’s acting like it.

Chen has seemingly been making headlines since he took over the CEO position at BlackBerry from Thorsten Heins last fall. He’s saved the company from acquisition, gotten into a spat with T-Mobile’s John Legere, and taken BBM multi-platform.

Of course, only time will tell if all of these shenanigans will pay off. While BlackBerry’s stock is indeed up from 6 months ago, it still appears to be bleeding customers. Last month the Air Force traded-in 5,000 BlackBerrys for other devices.

Blackberry users are “flop clingers” then.

    • on3simpleclick

wtf is a flop clinger? lol

      • XboxOne

someone that clinges to a flop.

      • Oscar Nigma

Its like a early 1930’s flapper, but with Blackberry users.

    • Hyr3m
  • Adham

Well to be honest the new Blackberry devices do have a slightly better battery life than iPhones, but here is to hoping the iPhone 6 has a bigger battery.

  • Mohamed Hassabo

To be honest, he has a point about the battery.. Well atleast for me. My iPhone barely lasts a day without reaching low battery. Charging it twice a day isn’t good enough.

    • XboxOne

You have to remember that the battery life is great considering the small size of the battery in iPhones.

      • grumpyfuzz

Who cares about the size of the battery, isn’t it about the actual experience?

      • https://twitter.com/MrElectrifyer MrElectrifyer

When Apple loses in the spec war, it’s about the experience, when they lose in the experience war, it’s about the specs…

      • grumpyfuzz

        That is spot on haha

      • jzack

it was never about specs.. what good is a 800 cores but still lags.. what good is a 200k mah battery but only last for 2 hour?

      • Dan

My Galaxy Note 2 has a 3100 mAH battery and lasts for 2 days (doesn’t lag either).

      • Kash Gummaraju

Horrible….just a simply horrible way of trying to convey your point. 800 cores lagging? What are they clocked at? .000000001 hz? 200000 mah battery lasting for 2 hrs? Da fuq? What are you doing? Does such a battery even exist for consumers?

      • jzack

        :double facepalm:

      • ✪ aidan harris ✪

How do you experience a battery? You somehow planning to connect your body up to an iPhone battery?

    • Peak

Heas to talk about the battery because he dare not talk about usability because no one wants to create anything for blackberry’s platform.

      • Hyr3m

They don’t need to. Android apps run on Blackberry OS 10.2.1.
The user interface and experience are eons ahead of iOS.
        Get up to speed mate.

      • Brent Shelton

Uh huh. That’s why Blackberry is still on life support.

      • iDefect

BlackBerry has a great product and plenty of cash in the bank. The problem they can’t seem to crack is getting through to everyone who has drank the cool aid, believing that it isn’t a a great product. It really is a great mobile platform with some great phones, especially the z30 which reviews praise consistently.

    • Thiago Vaccaro

      You should download BattSaver 7

      • Nirvana

Meh, that tweak just automatically switch off toggles for you, it carries no additional battery! I don’t see this power thing is a big issue for me!

      • Sunny

Might not be for you but it is for atleast 90% of owners of iphones surely, i laughed at the ‘wall hugger’ comment kos it is damn true! im always stuck charging my phone :/

      • Mohamed Hassabo

        Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Jeffrey

    WALL HUGGERS HAAHAH

  • Mescudi

He is right, whether we agree or not. My 5s’ battery lasts me just 12 hours.

    • Jeffrey

      mine about 8/9

    • XboxOne

That’s good for an iPhone. Want more battery life get a Mophie battery case.

  • thecalstanley

BlackBerry’s dont have the best battery life either. There isn’t really much comparison

    • N&LH

Because the battery life is the only thing that Blackberry CEO can use to compare it with the iPhone.

    • iDefect

#z30 is 25 hour battery, and that’s while using it for media, games, communication etc, not a standby #. Z30 is an amazing phone.

      • AnArcticMonkey

Seriously the comment section here is almost cringe-worthy, I prefer my iPhone but the anti-Blackberry circlejerk is just sad.

      • Hyr3m

Mine just lasted me a whole weekend; I took pictures, played heavy android games and spend hours talking on the phone… Still have 10% left when I get to the office Monday morning and it wasn’t even full when I left on Friday :D

      • iDefect

Great to hear, z30 is an amazing phone.

  • on3simpleclick

what wall? my 4000mAh battery pack replaces a wall & i can take it anywhere

    • Hyr3m

      Brick-hugger then ? :D

  • Matt Ashcraft

That’s not a good comment to blurt out. Especially since you have an App in the AppStore that Apple can easily pull.

    • https://twitter.com/MrElectrifyer MrElectrifyer
  • Jerry

My phone lasts me all day with heavy use. And the reason a blackberry would last longer is because no one wants to use that crap.

  • Scott

Except when I am at work where the cell signal is so bad I get great battery life in my iPhone 5. 4:54pm here right now and I have used my phone for 59 mins today and 5 hours and 54 mins of standby time. 99% battery power still. Granted I check email, send text, use amazon app, surf the blogs, stuff like that. I use my iPad rMini for watching video and most of my web browsing.

On a side note, I downloaded BBM when it came out but then realized I don’t know anyone with a blackberry. Mostly everyone I know just uses iMessages or normal text.

  • RarestName

Funny, my phone can last for one or two days.

    • mrgerbik

funny, when I barely use my phone it can last 2 or 3 days :O

      • RarestName

Mine is moderate usage. Texting, web browsing, email and taking pictures. I usually charge it at around 20~30%.

        What’s your usage pattern?

  • Max Rojas

    lmao so true!

  • Jason Baroni

Has spoken the guy who cannot sell phones due to “wall huggers” consumers.

    • Abi Manyu

Chen is only an attention whore… there’s no kind of any BB improvements that could gain any attention, so they decided to ‘borrow’ iphone’s name…

      • Hyr3m

Chen is right and Abi Manyu is oblivious.

      • Abi Manyu

        …said chen’s harem… bet you’re one of chen’s ‘huggers’

  • jack

who the hell this gook thinks he is

    • Carlos Gomes

        he insulted us first

      • Carlos Gomes

        “But mom, he started!”

      • Sunny

        lmao good replies! XD

      • mrgerbik

so you actually identify yourself with a phone, let alone the words of some CEO who you’ve never met?

      • Hyr3m

To be fair with the dune coon (just a wild guess while we’re into stereotypical name-calling), Chen did call iPhone users wall-huggers. One could be offended by this… especially if it’s true :D

    • iDefect

Gook? That’s definitely uncalled for. Racist comments required to defend a position are an embarrassment.

  • https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/412035973686366208/r14EeLu9.jpeg CPVideoMaker101

My iPhone 2G usually gave me about 2 days of battery life. With moderate usage.

  • Gabriel Schwartz

    BlackBerry who?
Is this a company or a fruit?

  • jocastro

and thats why blackberry is going down hill lol

would love to have a blackberry keypad built into my iPhone. call it a iberry. can’t type fast anymore since i switched to iPhone years ago.

But I like the virtual keyboard on my Z30, it’s much better and faster than the physical keyboard of the Q10.

  • Jack Wong

BlackBerry battery life last so much longer… of course… the phone is useless…

My preference for smartphone is iOS -> Windows -> Android, BB is not on the list at all.

    • WalterB

obviously someone who has never used the ne Blackberry phone..

      • Jack Wong

You are correct, I never owned any Android too, well… a week of Nexus 2012 and 2013 if this count.

Please join BB and try to make us get a BB’s phone.

You do not have to step on others to make you get higher, unless you really have a GREAT product, and where is that?

      • WalterB

I have used all three phones. I’m not stepping on anyone but I have an opinion based on using the phones. You said the BlackBerry phone is useless, the reason for me correcting your ridiculous statement.

      • Jack Wong

My opinion is about this guy, I am still waiting to see the new phone instead of his “talk”, show us the “amazing” phone please.

By the way, I am the IT support, I guess I do not have to name all the smartphones that I have experience with, and there is no more BB after mid-2013(where I work).

      • WalterB

I too am IT support. We have bb10 servers with all three phones on use managed through the BlackBerry servers. BlackBerry is having issues because of a very poor public perception about their phones, not the phones themselves. If you are really an IT support person, I feel bad for the people you try to help.

      • Jack Wong

It is okay, just like I do feel bad for the people who is still on BB.

I do not want it even it is free.

      • WalterB

I enjoyed out talk. Great dialog. Lol.
        IBahhhhhhh

      • iDefect

I’m really liking the comments about how BlackBerry phones are not any good by people who have obviously never had the opportunity to use a bb10 phone. I gave my iPhone up and went to BlackBerry over 1year ago. My z10 is an excellent phone and mobile platform. Though my wife decided BlackBerry wasn’t for her, she’s constantly finding herself impressed by it. It’s not the phone so many try to make it out to be. It’s excellent, and the z30 is really an outstanding smartphone. It’s rated extremely high by all who have given it a honest try.

If you think iPhone is best for you, then great, use an iPhone!

Bashing the bb10 platform is ridiculous, it’s a fantastic platform, each to their own, I say.

      • oioile

same here. I remember last fall after my boss got 2 Samsung Note both with defective battery from Verizon, he decided to replace it with the new Blackberry. Our IT support guy was sniffing at his thought saying: “even your own children will laugh at you if you go and buy Blackberry.” But he insisted he already has an iPad and does not feel like to use iPhone. I think he is now pretty happy with his BB(sorry I forgot which model).
I admit that BB is a decent phone for people who are seriously using it, even if I (or we, some Apple fans) cannot understand it whatsoever.

      • Hyr3m

        Probably a Z30.
        Greatest phone ever :D
I like the HTC One too but I love my 64GB microSD better ^^

      • Jack Wong

I am just being another John Chen.

  • Jerwyn Feria

Haha. So on a daily, how much is an iPhone used. Now compare that to a Blackberry phone of any kind. I’m saying from my point view, only reason why BB phones don’t lose as much battery is because it isn’t being used as much as an iPhone is. I have a friend that has a blackberry and a iPhone and he is much more on his iPhone because he uses it for more of its usability. I’m just gonna say that BB is mad that their application based operating system didn’t go so well like how iPhoneOS did back then at 2.0

    • Hyr3m

I probably use my Z30 more than you use your iPhone… and that’s not just because I don’t have to leave it plugged to the wall half of the day.

      • Jerwyn Feria

Everyday I’ll be doing homework on my iphone. If not homework, I’m reading something on the internet, Facebook, twitter, work email. If not that during work. I’ll be using my phone as a Point of Sale unit at work. When with friends, I’ll be using my iPhone as helm and science controls while playing Artemis

      • Hyr3m

Alright… I could tell you my life story too or just change my first sentence : “I probably use my Z30 as much as you use your iPhone… “

  • Jerwyn Feria

I’m proud to be a wall hugger :)

    • Hyr3m

That’s the way to go :D

      • Jerwyn Feria

I can socialize with people in front of me while I charge. Get the feel of talking to someone not on the other end of the screen. No offense to everyone here.

      • Hyr3m

What I meant was “If you’re going to be a wall hugger for the next few months/years, you might as well embrace it.” ^^

  • Sam Khan

Well i think all power users know about Mophie and Incipio

  • Sam Khan

By the way BB playbook is the worst product i have ever purchased

  • felixtaf

Trust me, Z10 wont last a day either… I dono what he is bragging about!

    • iDefect

My z10 lasts as long as my wife’s iPhone. The BlackBerry z30 is the real king of battery longevity.

  • Lam N

Blackberry phones last longer because they just idle all day long. No usability at all.

    • iDefect

That’s an inaccurate comment, I’m on my z10 nearly the entire day, I need to be connected both because of my job and my other side line responsibilities. I use social media, email and documents to go primary during my work day , but remote desktop functions are running on my z10 constantly. It’s a very capable device.

  • http://www.apple.com St3vè Jb

    Hey Apple Fans Boy….

  • Ariel

Then lets see him make a phone that lasts mote than a day!

    • Hyr3m

My Z30 just lasted me more than the whole weekend with moderate-heavy usage. I left the office on Friday with a bit more than 80% and still had ~10% when I got here on Monday morning. I spent about 3hours and a half on the phone, played heavy android games for a bit more than that… watched plenty of videos, took plenty of pictures (albeit without flash; great weather this weekend :D) and spent a good while dealing with emails. Oh, I use it as my mp3 player too…

  • WalterB

He is correct but …. I had a Z10 (the second best phone on the market today) and recently switched to the Z30 (the best phone on the market today) .
The Z10 battery life is as bad as the iPhone, both do not last a complete day.
The Z30 in comparison lasts a complete day with lots of life to spare, one of the reasons i switched.

    • Jack Wong

      Can I play Crazy Taxi?

Can I access my NAS via SMB to play mp4 file?

      • WalterB

Lol. Yes you have an iPhone and I concede, it’s a much better toy. The new BlackBerry phone is functionality superior.

      • Jack Wong

I am lost, so BB is just a business phone? Email only?

I though smartphone is also mp3 player, email, web access and then digital camera, even GPS since 2013, also a handheld game console, media player…

I am also using this toy to remote into my home laptop, then remote into my office computer then the server since we have 4G LTE.

      • WalterB

Jack, it does all these things much better in my opinion to an iPhone. Yes it’s not just a business phone. You need to review any product before you make comments like the ones you have made. Especially if you are in IT!

      • Jack Wong

To be honest, it is hard for people to turn back to BB.

        He has to do “something” great to impress us, not just talk -.-;

      • WalterB

And yes you can play crazy taxi and crazy taxi 3D on the new BlackBerry phones. Yes I can access a NAS and remote to my work computer, home computers and even the servers at work.

      • Jack Wong

Good to know, let see the next BB phone.

But I would rather invest on a Windows tablet/smartphone.

      • WalterB

Windows, lol. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.

      • Jack Wong

:x it depends on the owner.

      • WalterB

        True. Thanks for the dialog.

      • iDefect

        Yes Jack Wong, you can.

  • Diniesh

No matter what phone you use it all depends on your usage and features enabled for example location services/sensors. if you are a heavy user get a power bank or battery case as a back up. Really nothing to do with wether you a hold a samsung, black berry or an iphone.

  • https://twitter.com/MrElectrifyer MrElectrifyer

    Hahaha, silly but really true

  • Mustang5Oh

Guess he’s mad people actually USE iPhones unlike his dated dying phones.

    • Hyr3m

It’s time to wakey wakey :D

  • Nirvana

Yeah, like who would use Blackberry? Lack of apps cause irritation enough!

    • iDefect

Well, BlackBerry 10 phones can also run Android Apps in a secure environment , which pretty much makes the App argument null.

      • Sam Khan

You mean those stretched out android apps?

      • iDefect

True some look horrid, then I check them on my wife’s Note3 only to see they usually tend to look just as bad there. However most look and function great.

I’ve found that there is little need for android apps now anyway, but when you want, the option is there. The only apps that I’ve really had any interest in (like Netflix), work smoothly and I have no complaints.

  • Al3in

well for me my iPhone 5s lasts more than a day even that I contentiously use social apps , games and cydia because I disabled Background App Refresh and I reduced Motion from Accessibility menu and also Automatic updates for App Updates and also I disabled Location Services

  • iDefect

That’s a great article, thanks for sharing. Apparently the battery is not the problem, just turn everything off that makes it a functional smartphone then the battery lasts just fine. I’m not sure an article like that helps any brand with its battery image. There are articles just like this one about all brands (os’s), if you spend a few minutes looking for them.

    • mavro aspro

To be honest, there ever was an issue with iPhone’s battery…and of course using it without internet,apps/games it’s not the point,as then it can’t be called an iPhone!
Hope on the new one(6,Air or whatever it may will be called) will be better in battery!

P.S: Blackberry seems like a living-dead brand right now

An idiotic thing to say would be to call the best devices in the market “tech antiques”. You obviously own an obsolete piece of fancy overpriced toy-phone and need to get up to speed…

  • Scott

Wall huggers, lol. I travel for a living and the image is perfect. My 5 lasts anywhere from 6-9hrs…not enough, but short of a larger phone, which I don’t want, not sure that there’s any other solution than some sort of external charging, be it battery case or otherwise.

    • iDefect

I used a Mophie case on my iPhone, and it really was very good option. Only complaint was the phone became quite a bit heavier.

  • Jim Hart

Maybe it’s because Apple users actually *use* their phones? Btw Blackberry, how’s that market share going?

  • h4nd0fg0d

Hmm, for a company tht’s dead in the water they haven’t rlly got any room to pass judgement on Apple. Funny.

  • euthenia

yea, basically it’s because iphone users use their phone more often than blackberry.

  • Hyr3m

Oh I’ve tried all the good ones and I’ve also tried iPhones. You lack experience to call Blackberries antiques. That is unless you’re talking about actual Blackberry antiques… in which case we could talk about iPhone antiques.
