Yesterday afternoon, OtterBox showed off a brand new series of iPhone cases it’s calling ‘Symmetry.’ The new cases are surprisingly minimal, compared to the accessory-maker’s other offerings, and consists of just one solid piece.

OtterBox says that the new case is the culmination of over a year of design, testing and innovation. It’s one of the slimmest, most protective cases in its class, and will be available in a number of different colors and graphic designs…

From the company’s press release:

“The OtterBox Symmetry Series is the culmination of over a year of design, testing and innovation. This slender, cleanly constructed protective smartphone case is molded into a single piece for ease of installation. A dual-material construction makes Symmetry Series one of the slimmest, most protective cases in its class and a raised beveled edge helps keep the touch screen safe. Internal synthetic rubber with honeycomb coring helps protect the device from drops and shock. A full spectrum of wraparound colors and graphics on the sleek exterior add seamless style that slides easily into and out of pockets.”

And of course the official promo spot:

Honestly, I don’t see anything necessarily groundbreaking here. But with OtterBox’s track record in the iPhone case space, anytime it introduces something new, people pay attention. I will admit, though, the white/gray one looks sharp.

The OtterBox Symmetry cases will be compatible with the iPhone 5, 5s and 5c, and again will be available in a plethora of different color and graphic combinations. They’ll start shipping this spring with a price tag between $40 and $45.

What do you think of the Symmetry?

The only way to protect a 5/5s is in a thick sock! The paint on these is like a bleeding scratch card! My once beautiful, well looked after gold 5s now has a silver bezel. My OCD couldn’t handle the marks on the chamfer so i took the paint off! It baffles me how apple can put out a £600 device with a dog sh#t exterior. Pray the iPhone 6 has a better case!

I understand you. My iPhone 5c has got a gap between the screen and the plastic housing. It is not too noticeable because the screen is black and the gap tends to be dark, but if you use the flash light of another iPhone to analyse the gap, you are going to see much dust in there. A gap and dust. OCD rules. I hope Apple improve their build quality even more for this year’s iPhones.

You should just get it reanodized or get a bezel replacement. This is why I got the Space Grey, I’ve got a couple scratches and dings and you really can’t tell the difference in color.

        Re-anodized? How? Where? Isn’t a replacement back about £150? :0/

i never understood the otterbox case and why people buy them, their the thickest ugliest cases around.

    • OhSixTJ

Because some people work. And when you work, your phone has a greater chance of getting damaged. Dropping it on your bed while looking through Facebook while you’re waking up at 4pm in moms house hardly warrants a “protective” case.

      Get out there, do something.

      • Cameron Chao

I almost never drop my phone, I do work and I currently have a cheap eBay plastic case that does the job most of the time, my point was just why buy an otter box rather than thin cases that actually do a good job protecting the phone, even so life proof makes thinner all round protection that isn’t ugly.

      • OhSixTJ

Well much like you prefer a thin case, there are some that like bulk. Imagine that! :O people having their own ideas and opinions of things?? Holy shit!!

      • m3nphls

Thin cases don’t protect your phone. Coming from a Defender case, my phone was still brand new after 2yrs. Not to mention otterbox lifetime warranty.

      • Cameron Chao

please tell me how and when do you use a warranty for an iphone case?

      • m3nphls

Whenever I felt my case gets too dirty or looks too old I had no problem calling in and having them send me a new one.

      • Cameron Chao

if they do that then thats actually pretty cool, i never knew warranty covers dirt or age. Wish Apple has a warranty that covers that. “hi my iphone is dirty, send me a new one” Apple: Sure!

      • Ted Forbes

Your right I like to feel the built of the phone except I don’t know why Apple make iPhones and iPads so slippery. I use elago cases for years, its thin plastic cases grips firmly in the hand. I don’t drop much but when I do it does not break or scratch.

      • Cameron Chao

i almost never ever drop my phone, im not worried about that, what i put a case on for is to not get scratches, i get a little obsessive compulsive over the iphone, especially now with a gold iPhone 5s, they scratch far too easily, just putting it in my pocket caseless with other stuff can cause a scratch.

because they’re fat dumb ugly people. And if they say they are not then they are denying.

I used to work for AAA, and that Defender case saved it numerous times, especially in the rain.

  • Matthew Cooper

I been using bumpers since iPhone 4. If u cant take care of an iphone then dont buy one.

  • Gavin Friel

    “Ultra Thin” … LOL

    • Matthew Cleveland

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one wondering “wheres the thin?”
