samsung galaxy gear

In September, Samsung launched a line of Galaxy Gear smartwatches. The move appeared to be little more than a response to rumors that Apple and other tech companies were working on similar products, and an effort to be “first” to market.

But going first in unknown territory doesn’t always work in your favor, and it looks like the Galaxy Gear supports that theory. According to a new report, Samsung has sold just 50,000 smartwatches since it launched them nearly 3 months ago…

Here’s BusinessKorea:

According to the related industry sources on November 14, Samsung Electronics released the curved smartphone Galaxy Round on November 10, but the product currently shows daily sales of under 100 units. Its cumulative monthly sales fall under 10,000 units.

Also, on September 25, Samsung Electronics released the Galaxy Gear in time for the wearable computing generation. Yet this product has cumulative sales under 50,000, with daily sales of only 800-900 units. These low sales values for the Galaxy Gear are far below the initial expectations of the industry.”

Daily sales of 800-900 units is rough for a product that is sold worldwide, but it’s not surprising. Reviews for the Galaxy Gear have been mostly negative, with users complaining of its 1-2 day battery life, limited functionality and $300 price tag.

It’s worth noting that smartwatch sales from other companies haven’t been much more successful. Pebble’s managed to sell just under 200,000 units in its first year, which is impressive for a startup, but hopefully not indicative of interest in the space.

And I suppose this is about where Apple usually comes in, right? There were MP3 players before the iPod, smartphones before the iPhone, and tablets before the iPad. But Apple has this wait-and-see approach, that gives it extra time to react and refine.

Rumors that Apple is working on a smartwatch have been consistent over the last 6 months, with a recent report claiming that the device will come in multiple sizes for men and women. The so-called ‘iWatch’ is expected to launch sometime late next year.

Update: Samsung is refuting the numbers in the above report, claiming that it has sold a stout 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatches in the last two months. Note that it’s 800,000 units “shipped,” not “sold.” So technically, 750,000 of these shipped units could still be sitting on the shelves.

you can never trust samsung. remember they faked benchmarks, paid for people to pollute forums with good rep, their CEO was convicted of fraud, etc?

  • Skrilla

Apple will show them how it’s done with built in Nike+

  • bring_it_on

Apple will build it, sell it in the hundreds of thousands if not millions..and then samsung fans will claim that Samsung was first to market..

    • Dan

Won’t change the fact that it will be true. Just means that Apple is better at selling their product and that iFans are more faithful. Ie: I have a samsung phone but have no loyalty whatsover towards them.

      • bring_it_on

My point was, that its all about getting a product RIGHT and not being the first one out…Of course it helps big time if you are the first one out, and also get the product just right…! In my opinion apple will market the product as a stand alone device, which becomes even better when paired with another ios device…I think Samsung got it all wrong with the entire GALAXY+GALAXY gear approach…but thats just my opinion..Apple also makes products that have more customer appeal, whether that is because of the overall product value or brand loyalty is another issue..Nothing really is stopping samsung from building that sort of brand loyalty..Apple will probably sell this much in a matter of hours!! And all of that wont be because of loyal fans…

      • Dan

Yeah I agree, Apple is not always the first to implement certain features but when they do they get it right. Although you can’t deny that some Apple fans are more alike to cult members and will buy anything and say that the company can do no wrong 😉

      • Rowan09

True but it goes both ways and for every company.

      • John

        WAAAAAAIT a minute.
        Apple can do wrong?

(PS: How can I take these blinkers off.)

      • It’s easy. People trust on Apple because apple makes great products. Now with Samsung, it’s hard to be a loyal fan…for obvious reasons.

      • Dan

I agree, I don’t have Apple products anymore but they do inspire more confidence. I do have a Samsung phone (Note 2) which I am very happy with, but most of their products would not suit me.

      • mehrab

My first smartphone was a galaxy s3 and boy did they scare me away it was SOOOO horrible. lol i cant imagine how someone actually can be loyal to them

      • Dan

Well currently I have a Galaxy Note 2 and it’s never disapointed, so imo Samsung CAN make good products (their tv’s and blue ray players aren’t bad either). Although I agree that when I got the GS3 I was very disapointed, I ended up giving it to the wife.

      • mehrab

Note 2 is marginally good for me. Its always been slow to me and now even more after all the new devices i used. i dont like the design display and camera. And touchwiz is my least favorite launcher. If it had a higher ppi screen 330 ish and had more optimized play store apps i”d call it great but its just good.

      • Martynet

poor wife 🙂 Just get her an iPhone and stop torturing her 🙂

      • Dan

She had an iPhone before but she she hated iTunes and the poor battery. Now she can just hook up her phone via usb and drop music in the selected folder. Also got her a 5600 mah battery, phone lasts 3-4 days lol. She has no complaints.

      • John

To me, it seems Samsung will cast their net far and wide and THEN see what sells rather then taking the approach Apple have, research and create a handful of products that are of quality.

      • mehrab

Well iwatch was rumored to be a apple pruduct for years now and they are making one no doubt they hired alotof people from nike and also some people from fashion industries 2 months later out of the blue samsung makes a smartwatch i dont think they wanted to get it right i think they just wanted to be first and beat apple in terms of being the first company to make one.

      • John

I couldn’t agree more…not to mention, they really haven’t perfected it, just shoved as many features into it as possible without really thinking about form or function.

      • John

But it’s not true, weren’t Sony the first to bring a smart watch to the market?

    • Cameron Chao

i was glad Samsung went first, because when Apple releases their version and does so well with it, Samsung will release their updated version that looks exactly like Apples, we know how much it will be copied.

  • Samsung success depends on Apple success.
They will only sell a lot of watches after copying the Apple iWatch.

At this moment, this is just a brick where 50.000 morons fell on Samsung lying ads.

    • leart

      100% true

  • hkgsulphate

    1 word: UGLY

  • Rowan09

When I said the Galaxy gear did too much and made a horrible move by making it only compatible with the Note 3 at launch fanboys on this blog killed me. Now they see the numbers I wonder what they are going to say? Why make a Android watch to only work with only 1 Android phone at launch and only 2 later? Stupid move Samsung. How can they refute the numbers saying they sold 800,000 instead, that’s far from under 50,000?

    • planetcoalition

The funny thing is… Why are there Samsung fanboys on this blog? They must be really pathetic.

  • felixtaf

People buy these expensive ugly first gen products?

    • Burge

First iPhone ugly.. I think not..

    • John

First gen iPad and iPad mini, ugly?
      I do not think so.

  • Yasser Kaskas

Tried it on in-store. It was uncomfortable and looked awkward and bulky. Not practical for every day use.

  • ConduciveMammal

Hmmm WiredUK just reported that Samsung actually sold 800,000 in two months. Which is it?

EDIT: Ahh never mind, I just saw the update on this article

    • John

I wonder how many of these (alleged) 800,000 sold units were returned. Didn’t Best Buy claim something like 1 in four were returned.

  • Chindavon

Samsung should be treated for bipolar.

  • Burge

Didn’t Pebble sell more on kickstarter..

    • felixtaf

Pebble Smartwatch and Sony Smartwatch 2 looks much better than Samsung’s Gear. I prefer Sony’s design over anything [Although am not planning to get ANY (includes iWatch) of these smartwatches]

  • Ricardo Arriaga

The las comment from Jack should be “you can never trust idownloadblog”, again this kind of internet fan sites just lie to get attention. The real number is 800,000 galaxy gear units. Stop creating false articles idownloadblog, remember, if you do not have something good to said about someone is just better to keep your mouth shut instead of lying.

  • Ted Forbes

50,000 or 800,000 after 2 months what does it matter its a watch and a Samsung watch with no spark. Remember the first iPhone? It was a phone like no other a a phone we couldn’t go on living without. iPhone gave all mobile phones the spark it lacked.

Look, I know Android fanboys wont like what I am about to say next. Well its this, after iPhone life just didn’t make any more sense trying to live without iPhone!!!

Lol!!!!! There, I said it!!!! Now we can move on.

Samsung tried but didn’t do it (they rushed it) so it will have to be Apple to spark this watch thing. Just “Watch” and see, Apple will get this thing right. The Apple watch will be the watch that will give all watches the punch it needs (they do this all the time for Samsung) and it will be the watch we cant live without, And all of a sudden Samsung will sell millions of watch after that… “Watch” and see

    • Hwang Lee

Well think about this, without Samsung doing it first, Apple or any other company would have nothing to really improve on. These companies can hear the criticisms of the SmartWatch, and then build a better product. Someone’s gotta do something first, so let it be Samsung.

      • Ted Forbes

And that is all I am saying. Samsung is the first to do it wrong. Apple is always the first to do it right.

      • Hwang Lee

Yeah but you’re supposed to do things wrong first. It’s natural. I don’t think the Smart Watch is great at all. but I understand why it’s bad. It’s basically the first of it’s kind.

      • Umut Bilgiç

        Samsung is not the first…

  • Tom

    Nailed it! …Not.

I bet Apple will sell more iWatches than this on day 1.

  • My Wasted Fantasy

I’m not going to lie, I almost bought one. Till I got my hands on one..

  • Matt Dowdy

If there is a high demand for smart watches then my guess for samsungs low sales figures are because the galaxy gear was only compatible with the note 3 up until the last few days where Samsung is updating the galaxy family of devices so I would give it a bit of time to give people the chance that now have a compatible device to decide if they want a smart watch now that they have the choice

  • Philthy

Apple do it right? At the End Apple buy some parts for the iWatch from their “rivals” and with every sell Samsung, LG and Sharp are part of the Success and make money from the Apple Fans. You all blame Samsung so often it is possible and then use your iPhone5s, feel like you are one of a Elite and at the same time use parts like the 64bit processor from the so weak Company named Samsung or the Display at a iPad. Apple need Samsung but at the same time Samsung didn’t need Apple to build their devices.

  • idwnldFAIL

Actually you can never trust idownloadblog – the fact is this is completely untrue. And yesterday the news sites were reporting on how much of a success the gear has been with almost 1 million sales. But then isheep will beleive anything.
