web wikipedia spotlight search

A feature that could have easily gone unnoticed with yesterday’s release of iOS 7.0.3 is the return of web and Wikipedia search directly from Spotlight. The feature had been missing since the first beta release of Apple’s latest mobile operating system.

To access it, simply pull your Home screen down to reveal Spotlight Search. Then start typing whatever you’re looking for. If necessary, scroll all the way down. In my experience, I’ve found that some common searches usually return tons of emails first, making the feature a little less convenient to use than I would want to…

In Spotlight Search settings, there is no way of moving the Search options to the top either, so unless you’re searching for something very specific (see screenshot above), searching for vague keywords such as “iPhone” will likely return many unwanted items first (ie, emails containing the word “iPhone”).

It’s still nice to see this feature back in iOS 7.0.3. Now I’ll just have to remember to use it.

Does it display results within spotlight? Or just link you to safari?

    • chumawumba

      Safari

      • Matt Taylor

Like iOS6! Lot of advancements in spotlight then…

    • Tom

      opens safari

  • Jonathan

I actually never used that feature for some reason.

    • Matthew Cleveland

Me neither. But I think I will now. It sounds easier.

Also they bring back the clock on lock screen while playing music. Click the Home button, and it switches to clock.

    • Armen M.

The clock is always avail on the status bar, except if you want to display the date…

      • Quang

I mean the big clock with date at on the lock screen. Its back in iOS 7.0.3, right?
Correct me if I’m wrong, cause I don’t see it in iOS 7.0.2 🙂

      • T_Will

I’m still on 7.0.2 and pressing the Home button while music is playing toggles between the large clock and music controls. I hadn’t realized this before though, so thanks for the tip. 🙂

really want to get spotlight safari search back but nervous about updating out of the next jailbreak

In the last tweet Musclenerd posted (regarding the update), in the replies, he mentioned that if you are on iOS7 already, then it is fine to update.

  • Shane Sepeda

I’ve always used it! Glad it’s back! Only drawback is waiting for MuscleNerds tweet saying it’s okay to update!

    • Jonathan

      Already have. 🙂

    • Vitaliy Anonymous

He never really officially mentioned in a tweet that it is okay. If you see his last tweet regarding the update, in the replies, he mentions that it is okay to update, only if you have iOS7.

Was really pissed when this feature was taken away. I think the spotligjht search is the most underrated feature of ios, but its quite brilliant. It has the whole phone in one place

  • Khis Ariasaif

I have also noticed you can take pictures while recording video. Unless this was there and I just recently noticed this feature.

    • iBanks

Think the feature was released with 7.0, but may have been limited to certain devices maybe?

  • Query

Someone tell me what the jailbreak guys said. Safe to update?

    • Vitaliy Anonymous

Yep. As long as you are on iOS7, you should be okay. If you are on 6.1.3 and waiting for the jailbreak, then do not update.

      • f96lrs

he said 702 nothing about 703

  • iBanks

I have a really good feeling that 7.1 will bring quick reply to messages and email as it is in Mavericks.
