IFTTT How To 5

We have some pretty diehard fans. Quite a few of our readers boast about not being able to go to work until reading our news and jailbreak articles. Some have even mentioned adding our RSS feed to their SMS notification through IFTTT.

For those that don’t already know how to use the trigger-and-action service, we have a quick tutorial for creating an IFTTT recipe from both the website and the iOS app. This will allow you to receive SMS notifications every time an article is published on iDB…

As a friendly reminder, we know that a lot of our readers already know how to create recipes using IFTTT. This tutorial is for our new readers who may not already have experience with the trigger-and-action community. If you know how to create a recipe, feel free to skip our tutorial. Maybe we will have something new for you next time.

If you haven’t already, go to IFTTT.com and sign up. All you need is an email account and password. You can also do this on your iPhone from the IFTTT app.

From the website

IFTTT How To 1

Step 1: Create the “This”

  • After you’ve created an account, tap the “Create” tab at the top of the screen. Then, select the “This” word from the sentence.
  • Tap the RSS feed icon from the list of Trigger Channels.
  • Choose a Trigger. You have the option to choose from a New Feed Item, which triggers the action every time a new item is added to the RSS feed, or a New Feed Item Match, which triggers the action every time a new item in the RSS feed that mentions a keyword or phrase is added. Choose New Feed Item.
  • Copy the iDB RSS feed URL (http://www.idownloadblog.com/feed/) and paste it into the feed URL bar. Click the “Create Trigger” button.

Step 2: Create the “That”

  • When you have finished step one, you will see the “If [this] then [that]” sentence. Except the word “this” will be replaced with an RSS feed icon. Click on the “That” word in the sentence to create the action.
  • Select the SMS icon from the list of Action Channels.
  • Activate your SMS channel. To do so, you must enter the phone number for the device you wish to receive the SMS messages to. You will get an SMS message sent to your phone with the activation PIN.
  • Enter the PIN into the pop up window to activate SMS capability.
  • Click “Continue to the next step” and select “Send me an SMS” to receive a message on your phone whenever iDB posts a new article.
  • You can customize what the message will read, but the default will be, “New post on iDownloadBlog: {Title} {URL link}.

From the app

IFTTT How To 4

Step 1: Create the “This

  • Tap the recipe icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Tap the plus (+) icon to create a recipe.
  • Tap the highlighted “+”from the sentence and then scroll to the RSS feed icon from the list of Trigger Channels.
  • Tap the “New Feed Item” trigger from the two options.
  • Enter the iDB RSS feed URL (http://www.idownloadblog.com/feed/) and tap “Continue.”

Step 2: Create the “That”

  • In the “If [this] then [+]” sentence, tap the (+).  Then, select the SMS icon from the list of Action Channels.
  • Similar to the above-mentioned SMS activation, you will have to add your phone number and activate SMS with the four-digit PIN they will send you. If you have already added your phone number, you will not have to perform this action again.
  • Tap the “Finish” button and you are ready to go.

Other than sending an SMS whenever iDB publishes an article, what is your favorite IFTTT recipe?

  • Vvbreaker

Will AT&T charge me MSG fees when I receive SMS notifications ?

    • CryptoCoin420

      who doesn’t have unlimited messaging??

      • My Wasted Fantasy

Apparently “Vvbreaker” doesn’t have unlimited messaging..

    • http://www.sacramaniacs.com/ Lory Gil

The notification is sent to you as a text message, so if you do not have unlimited text messaging, you will be dinged every time a text is sent to your phone.

  • Jo

    thanks a thousand

  • Jo

no jokes this blog is on the top 5 best blogs on my blog list. yes I have a blog list

    • Jonathan

      Top 5? Pfft. Number 1 :D

  • Jo

    the second link is broken

  • Mark

If your courier charges you for each text, bare in mind that iDB pushes approximately 2-5 article every 40 minutes or so it is really one of the busiest blog out there.

    • Steven Cannan

Iv seen them not post for days sometimes

      • Matt Ashcraft

        That’s usually over the weekend.
Unless it’s important or a Staff finds something interesting over the weekend, it’s usually dead Sat and Sun. I follow iMore as well. They do the same.

  • Matt Ashcraft

How well would this work with IFTTT + Pushover Notifications?

    • Burge

It work very well with pushover and a pebble watch

  • blastingbigairs

Can you set it to only notify me when an IOS 7 JB is released???

    • Matt Ashcraft

That would be interesting. Have it set to trigger only if specific criteria are met if IDB post an article with the word ‘Jailbreak’ in the headline.

Don’t think there is an option. As-of-yet.

      • Jonathan

Or notify people when a certain tag is used?

  • Question

Couldd you guys write another article lol i want to see if this works

  • omrishtam

can’t you just make an app? PLEASE?!

    • Jonathan

iOS 7 style? That’d be so cool. Or, update the mobile version :) I would LOVE that!

      • omrishtam

I would too much and I hope they will do it soon

    • n0ahcruz3

      This ^^.

    • Question

      This

  • http://www.ideaprison.com/ ideaprison

Nothing is free, let alone SMS… either you’ll be charged, or you’ll end up getting ads/unwanted texts.

    • http://www.sacramaniacs.com/ Lory Gil

No ads. If you have unlimited text messaging, you will not be charged anything extra. You will never be sent unwanted texts or ads from IFTTT.

  • Jonathan

I can’t start school without checking iDownloadblog. :D

    • XboxPS

      How old are you?

      • Jonathan

        14.

      • XboxPS

My age is less than yours.

      • Moi

        Babies haha

      • XboxPS

        Goo Goo Gah Gah!!!

      • Jonathan

Mhm….. don’t forget I hacked a computer, twice, can write C++, and am a professional photographer. Babies, eh? lol

      • Moi

        My bad I should’ve said ” talented babies ”
By the way I’m not that old , I’m 18

      • Jonathan

        I guess that’s better, lol.

      • Jo

is writing C++ really difficult to write? just curious

      • Jonathan

Any first language is difficult. It’s like learning another language that we speak. Once we know the basics, the rest is easier. Same with C++. I was clueless in the beginning. But now that I know the basic commands, what does what, so so forth, I’d say it’s a rather easy language.

      • Jo

        ok

      • omrishtam

        i am 15 :D

    • chumawumba

I can’t start life without iDB

  • n0ahcruz3

My daily dose of all things iOS. Although i wont be trying this for my carrier charges my sms. :P

  • jocastro

    meh i rather use flipbaord

  • Shay Shtern

Dont get an SMS Pin Code to confirm.
    Any alternative ?

    • Burge

Your carrier needs to support it too..
Search Winterz in ifttt and get email notifacation

  • PatrickNo

Who needs SMS notifications?! Just use Reeder ;-)

  • Burge

Or just search for WINTERZ on ifttt and download the email notifications ..that’s been on ifttt for a while now..
You can even download the podcast only email notifacation ..both by Winterz

  • ✪ aidan harris ✪

I haven’t used this service but it sounds similar to Boxcar which offers push notifications for various services such as RSS.

  • tstsr6

It’s a shame uk carriers aren’t supported on this app otherwise it would be amazing

    • Burge

On ifttt search Winterz and get email notifacations

      • tstsr6

Emails aren’t the same as texts

      • Burge

No but texts cost..if not in your plan ..plus this don’t work in the uk .. I tried way before this post was put on here

      • tstsr6

It doesn’t cost me to receive texts at all

      • Burge

If this worked on UK carriers you would be signing up for a service ..there going to charge someone..

  • Saeed Ghattas

We need an App for that…

  • Tsavo Walker

I’ve missed English to catch up on IDB

  • Yunsar

Is there anyway to use this for iMessage?

  • Mostafa Mahmoud

why don’t you make an app ! it will be Awesome .. Thanks

  • https://twitter.com/MrElectrifyer MrElectrifyer

Twitter does that already via push notifications and LockInfo already displays RSS feeds on my LockScreen, don’t need another notifier…

  • Sⅈℕœ∂ℯ™

iDB needs to make an app. I prefer app to visiting web blog. e.g iClarified sends me notification each time news is posted.

    You can do it!

  • https://twitter.com/aphunex aphunex

Nice idea! I did that with mail. ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/luisreyespr Luis

Shit. Getting my iphone and reading this blog is the first thing I do when I wake up

  • Amad

Does not support the uk network three.

  • Max Rojas

Idownloadblog should just make an app for this already.

  • http://www.mnatives.com/ pramod kumar

In this post we look at an actual case of sms.

  • life isn’t easy
