Philip Elmer-DeWitt, writing for Fortune:

Last quarter, Apple finally made a major acquisition. And what did it buy?

It bought Apple.

By my calculation, the company spent $16 billion last quarter ($4 billion in cash, $12 billion through the so-called accelerated share repurchase program) to purchase 36 million of its own shares at an average price of just over $444.

For that amount, Apple could have bought three Nokias or three BlackBerrys…

Maybe Apple will pull a Dell and go private at some point?

I’m all for it. If a company can help itself without the stock market it should do that.

  • I’d be intrigued to see if they do go private as well. I think they can sustain w/o the stock market.

  • Hi Marc

We are not in coalition with anybody. As far as I can tell, 9to5Mac isn’t copying anything from us, and when they use one of our posts as reference, they always credit us fairly. We, of course, always return the favor when we reference one of their posts.

Ok, thanks for answering my question. I just noticed that they cover quite similar topics sometimes, which would concern me.
Anyway, your blog is top notch, without question. My daily source, great community! Keep it up.
