Check out this new “iPhone 6″ concept video

By , Apr 14, 2013

It’s the time of year where not only are people conceptualizing the new version of iOS, but they’re also imagining what the new iPhone might look like. This new concept video shows off a new thinner and smaller iPhone design with a bigger screen, sans Home button. No, I don’t ever think we’ll ever see an iPhone without a Home button, but it’s nice to use your imagination. What do you think about the design? Yay or nay?

    nay

iPhone’s will always have some sort of physical button on the front.

    • QuarterSwede

After using Zephyr there is no reason for it. Gestures work that well. In fact, I find them easier to use. Swiping up to go to home or swipe up and hold to reveal the multitasking tray. Apple may think they’re too complicated for normal users I suppose.

      • Beta382

The problem with replacing the home button with swipe gestures is that it breaks many App Store apps (Pandora, Temple Run, Paper Toss, to name a few I can think of off the top of my head. Many games would have an issue with this).

      • QuarterSwede

Apple has never cared about breaking apps in the past.

      • Matthew

        How?

      • QuarterSwede

It can conflict with apps that already use gestures. Facebook being the most used I imagine. Swiping left and right to switch apps can conflict with Facebook’s side panels (chat, etc). In Zephyr you can customize it to use two finger swipes but it’s highly doubtful Apple would make a necessary gesture that has to be used with two hands.

      • Beta382

The apps I listed use swipes from the bottom as an integral part of the app (and all are apps with rather large users bases, with the possible exception of the latter). Also, most intensive games nowadays are swipe-heavy. Making a purposeful/accidental swipe up from the bottom now close the app would piss off users, and moreover, piss off devs.

A few unhappy devs is nothing for Apple to worry about; a large number of devs with massive user bases is a different story.

      • QuarterSwede

        True.

      • http://twitter.com/Grolubao Grolubao

Indeed! Home button is useless to me right now with Zephyr

      • Damian W

Apple put complicated gestures on OSX and everyone loves it. So they could do the same with iOS.

      • QuarterSwede

OS X isn’t meant to be used one handed. That’s the real issue.

      • Damian W

OSX and iPad have gestures . Most android handsets got rid of physical button. It is really time for iPhone. Pressing home button with one hand is more difficult than swiping up the finger. Btw, my home button completely broke one week ago so thanks to zephyr I forgot that it exists.

      • QuarterSwede

Sure they could. You can even get the native iOS iPad gestures on the iPhone but they’re a pain to use (four/three finger) because of the size of the screen.

As someone already mentioned they’d make many games and apps (including Facebook) hard to use because of conflicting gestures.

      • Damian W

Apps are meant to adjust to specific phones. They are always updating together with new phones. Compatibility issue would be fixed in a matter of few updates. Dont tell me Apple would not do major change because facebook app etc would run into issue.

      • QuarterSwede

The main point is that most gesture based apps, which are far more popular today, would have major issues. Not minor, _major_usage based issue.

      • Damian W

You might be right, but I am still hoping that the home button will disappear in the near future. After all, it is very obsolete and apple should not dwell on something that was good 6 years ago.

      • QuarterSwede

        Agreed.

  • http://twitter.com/VuilzakFrak Bram

    Lovely

  • Mr_Russ1an

That is so ugly. Also the glass on the back looks horrible because it is so big and not proportional. Overall I hate everything about this.

    • http://twitter.com/MCaudebec Maxim∑

if you look at the patents Apple has filed recently they seem to be following a design similar to iPod nano 4G and 5G but thinner and only slightly curved

  • Bob

    Not feeling it.

    • http://twitter.com/yashgorana Yash Gorana

      true story bro !

It just doesn’t touches my heart.
++ the screen size is awful !

    • GuyBey0ndC00L

I would luv the iPhone Screen to be that size but keep the home button. Think that screen size is the sweet spot.

    • GuyBey0ndC00L

If a smaller iPad is cleaning winner people over even with older specs. Why can’t a slightly bigger iPhone good the same.

  • Andrew Jr.

    Neigh

  • @official_jdc

Front looks good, massive glass panel not so much so

  • http://twitter.com/ZacHack Zac Ramirez

    No

  • seyss

I don’t think Apple will change screen size again Jeff

    • http://www.facebook.com/L.Tempris Leviscus Tempris

Hope not the screen size is perfect as is. Maybe even too big.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002884144215 David Rivera

In the back looks like the iPhone 2G.

  • http://www.facebook.com/vainstar Hermès Vainstar Chu

    i like this

  • QuarterSwede

Wow. I usually hate these but this one is brilliant. Like a meld of the original iPhone and the 5. It’s gorgeous.

  • Beta382

Eww. Too much gloss. And that larger screen just looks like crap with the non-proportional borders (too thin).

And to be honest, how much “thinner” do we want to go? When I first held my iTouch 5, I almost dropped it because there wasn’t enough substance to it. It needed a case to bulk up a bit and feel comfortable in my hand. Light and thin are nice buzzwords, but there is an extant at which thinner is too thin, and lighter is too light. (which, although I don’t have an iPhone 5, I feel has already been reached.)

I sincerely hope that “thinnovation” doesn’t proceed any further. Too little substance in holding the device is quite awkward.

    • QuarterSwede

Have you seen an iPad mini? It has non-proportional borders.

      • Beta382

        Not really…

I am talking about the space above and below the screen. In removing the home button, the screen takes up for too much of the vertical surface (in this concept). The iPad Mini still has adequate vertical borders to maintain a pleasing aesthetic.

      • QuarterSwede

        That’s entirely subjective you realize.

      • ReanimationXP

Agreed. Both this and the iPad Mini look great. The fatass bezels are exactly what everyone complained about on iPad to begin with and they’re finally gone.

  • http://twitter.com/klouud Timothy Polumbo

I think Apple is going to settle into this design for a while – they seem to do this, and why not? The MacBook has looked pretty much the same for a while, MacBook Air, Pro, iMac, Mac Pro… the list goes on. People who demand a new design are ridiculous – why do we need a new design? How about we make minor improvements to the current design and find ways to IDK… boost performance and battery life! Also, Apple needs to really focus on iOS and closing that gap between iOS and Android as an OS. Honestly, this design is probably the future of the iPhone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/xvxfrozenxvx Marcio Atouguia

It’s pointless looking at these renders as we know that the next iphone will look exactly like the 5. I’m more interested in ios 7

    • http://twitter.com/P_FJP Cisco

The iPhone 5s will look the same as the i5 but this is a concept of the i6 read the title.

    • Liam Mulcahy

      yes iOS 7!

      • http://www.facebook.com/L.Tempris Leviscus Tempris

And a iOS 7 jailbreak. I really hope evaders will be developing the exploits before it releases.

      • http://www.facebook.com/liamsagooch Liam Googolplex Merlyn

How can they develop for something that’s not released?

      • http://www.facebook.com/antman217 Anthony Antunez

        iOS 7 Beta

      • http://www.facebook.com/L.Tempris Leviscus Tempris

Because they’ve found the exploits. If they are still there in iOS 7. Then it’s gravy for them. They should develop a secret jailbreak for 6.1.3 and see if it works with 7 also. That way we could all see a jailbreak faster. And if not they would already have a starting point new for iOS 7. Hopefully.

      • http://twitter.com/P_FJP Cisco

It was the end for evaders on iOS 6.1.2 :(

      • http://www.facebook.com/L.Tempris Leviscus Tempris

Sorry. Don’t think so. They claim to be sitting on new exploits. If that holds true like they promised the last jailbreak.

      • http://twitter.com/P_FJP Cisco

I hope you are right, I want EVADERS to come back

      • http://www.facebook.com/L.Tempris Leviscus Tempris

        Trust me. Me too. :)

      • yahmed

I’m pretty sure by then there will be some other team working on the jailbreak. It is the end of the Evad3r’s era.

    • SkyFall

Yeah but what if Apple releases iPhone 6 this year? I mean if they release iPhone 5s with minor upgrades it won’t worth to buy.

      • http://www.facebook.com/L.Tempris Leviscus Tempris

Not going to happen. They may be developing it now. But I doubt it will be this year.

  • http://twitter.com/VinnyTerra1 VinnyTerra

The screen size will remain 4 inches for a while. Apple made developers in the App Store configure their apps so its native for the 4 inch iPhone 5. It’s mandatory and have until May 1st to convert or risk being banned from the App Store. Apple thinks the current screen size is perfect for a smartphone. You want a bigger screen and like iOS, try an iPad. I own a mini and love it. Also, the cheaper iPhone that is supposed to come out along side the premium one will also be 4 inches. iOS 7 and fingerprint technology will be the selling point for the iPhone5S.

    • http://twitter.com/klouud Timothy Polumbo

Good points. I’m crossing my fingers for better battery life… aside from that, all other upgrades are gravy to me at this point.

      • http://www.facebook.com/L.Tempris Leviscus Tempris

Same here. Then again if you keep on your phone for hours of coarse it dies. But at least the good thing is it takes tips an hour to charge if left alone! :)

    • ReanimationXP

Still think this whole fingerprint shit is bogus. What’s the point?

Reminds me of the thumb readers on ThinkPads. Who actually uses those? No one. Exactly why the MBP doesn’t have one.

      • http://www.facebook.com/L.Tempris Leviscus Tempris

For the future of making payments and managing money all online through your phone. Say you have a yard sale, go to a pub, you can use the scanner to verify transactions. It’s also cool because chances are they will be adding it built in to the home screen button. This will be transparent to the user whilst serving a better purpose. And you could make your phone to where third need your finger to unlock it. Unless they Cut your hand off. Oh god I hope not. Then again I really hope the don’t make it to the design they filed a patent for where the scanner seems to reside as a seperate button next to the home button.

      • http://www.facebook.com/liamsagooch Liam Googolplex Merlyn

I did wonder how, if fingerprint was implemented, the iPhone would “talk” to the payment device. NFC? Bluetooth? Hmmm

      • http://www.facebook.com/L.Tempris Leviscus Tempris

        NFC? Bluetooth? iTooth?

  • http://twitter.com/P_FJP Cisco

Yeah not feeling this at all, hope it doesn’t look like that if it comes down to being similar like this I won’t buy it(or would I) just because I am a faithful apple fanatic

  • Jordan

    No,

    Absolutely not
    Everything is out of proportion.
Especially the glass at the back of the case

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

perfect that how the 5 should have looked

    • seyss

“Joe Jonsen seal of approval” strikes again

    • http://www.facebook.com/bunna.chea.5 Bunna Chea

didn’t I see your comment some where that you don’t like big screen phone ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

oonly thing bad is tat same boring IOS UI design lol its so damn retro now its sad

    • http://www.facebook.com/L.Tempris Leviscus Tempris

Well if apple turned and redid everything you’d be pissed cause you couldn’t use it like you used to. They have to keep it the same for consistency. It’s like windows 8 the moment you see it you want to shoot it.

  • Joe Bobbins

    That’s pretty cool!

  • Om Soni

    Go get an Android. ;)

  • 4p0c4lyps3

    Pointless, but looks cool.

  • ReanimationXP

Now that is a beautiful phone. This is how Apple should have done two-tone.

  • PeanutGalery

    Please no.

  • Ernie Marin

Why do they still think removing the home button is a good idea?, it would be the stupidest idea to remove it, maybe put it one the side or something but not removing it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cameron.nelms Cameron Nelms

The back is a reused design of the first iPhone! Nice idea, but ugly when made modern.

  • Liam Mulcahy

    ugly!

  • http://twitter.com/reloadedhead Tom García

It’s the same but without the home button..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1809769505 Tom Bush

    Waste of bandwidth and talent.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Makavelli.1 Joseph A. Ahmad

The back is hideous, the front is pretty cool. Overall, I’d rather see an all aluminum back if you’re going to slap a huge piece of glass on there for no reason.

  • http://twitter.com/TonyLonsway Tony Lonsway

looks to be running iOS 6…

  • http://www.facebook.com/TheGreenMachine667 Jason Forker Ruoff

wow looks like same…. oh wait ya its apple

  • http://www.facebook.com/bunna.chea.5 Bunna Chea

if this became everybody who always complain how android screen is too big going to start saying how brilliant it is to make the screen bigger than line up to buy it. Lol

  • Damian W

I want to believe that we gonna see an iPhone without home button. Zephyr proved that home button is obsolete and mostly useless. Moreover, Android phones proved it too to some point.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=645816319 Dominique Choo

I wish apple would just make a home button with touch interface. Then I wouldn’t worry about having to replace my home button after a year.

    • qosmio

Maybe dont push so hard!!! Ive had every iphone going and not once have I needed to replace my home button…

  • http://twitter.com/day_dreamer_92 Radu

    this is waaaay too fat!
get a galaxy note if you lile this oO

  • http://twitter.com/notoriousTEG tim

only chance there’ll ever be an iphone w/out a home button is if they implement zephyr

  • wheebang

What is the point of all these Concept videos? All they show is something we wish we had, but will never get.

  • Hyr3m

    meh..

    Trash

  • last_chancexxx

I love the back, but anything over the size of the iphone 5 is hideous

  • @dongiuj

I think it looks kind of ok minus the glass on the back.

Need my home button. Even if they make it smaller or a different shape.

yes home button is iconic an symbolic
