Smugglers caught sneaking iPhones into China in glass beer bottles

By , Apr 21, 2012

M.I.C gadget passes along an interesting story regarding a recent smuggling bust that took place at the Sha Tau Kok border in Southern China. Chinese officials seized hundreds of iPhones from a woman traveling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen.

The craziest part of this story is how the handsets were being transported. The Customs agents found the iPhones hidden inside 25 ounce solid glass beer bottles. How’d the smugglers manage to pull this off? Watch this video…

What you are looking at is Chinese officials removing iPhones from the inside of glass bottles. Apparently the smugglers cut these bottles in half — without cracking them, mind you — put the handsets inside, and then perfectly resealed them with transparent tape. Wow.

When it was all said and done, more than 200 iPhones were seized. Can you imagine meticulously cutting and resealing that many bottles? Boy, the smuggling business must be getting rough these days.

Sort of ironic that they are trying to smuggle them back into the same city where they are built.

      2 things:

      1) The iPhone is a phone, Google on the otherhand is a company so your misguided logic for your comment is just that.

      2) How can people be so dumb to like a comment that not only shows a lack of knowledge but is pure moronic, i’m sure the people who liked it, along with you of course, actually never use Google to search the web, course not, that would just be hypocritical now wouldn’t it !!

        1) It’s also annoying how so many people (mostly hardcore Android fanboys) kept on saying “Android vs iPhone”, or “I hate Apple, Android is better” or something like that.

I don’t know how people managed to ignore the fact that the iPhone isn’t the only device running iOS, or how Apple is a company and not a mobile operating system (-_-)

You didn’t have to write 2 paragraphs for his single line comment, with a little bit of common sense anybody can understand he meant ios vs android :)

I wanna add a 3rd point to your argument, how exactly is this article supporting the fact that iPhone is superior in any way?
I’m a fan of apple and their products, but I really don’t see how this is supporting iPhone over android phones. (maybe what he meant by ”google”)

the cleaner was paid $200 ( not known if HKD or RMB ) by a Hong Kong man to push the trolley of glass bottles through the customs, in the name of clearing rubbish

      • Kok Hean

That wasn’t clear in the video so I blindly ignored it (^__^)

Why would they need to smuggle the iPhones?

    • http://twitter.com/rlmeena Roshan

Because smuggled iPhone are sold on half or less then half price.
Downside is, these are not entitled for Apple guarantee or support.

I myself is planning to buy a smuggled iPhone next time as soon as we have iPhone 5 in market.
