Today I tried out OpenBackup, a new package backup solution for your jailbreak apps and tweaks. Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical. I’ve had my fair share of experiences with backup tools for jailbreak apps tweaks in the past, and they either don’t work, or are overly complicated.

Outside of PKGBackup, I can’t really recommend any backup solutions, although I have yet to try iBye (I have heard good things about that).

But even an excellent app like PKGBackup can be borderline confusing when it comes to safely backing up and restoring your Cydia tweaks. With the advent of iCloud, I held out hope that a backup tool could harness its power for backups and restores, and that’s just what happened.

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing OpenBackup, the first tool of its kind that utilizes iCloud for seamless backups and restores…

What makes OpenBackup so promising is how ridiculously easy it is to use. There’s no setup, no configuration; you just backup and restore. It’s as simple as 1-2-3.

What’s great about OpenBackup is that it totally relies on iCloud. It saves a list of all of your free Cydia apps and tweaks on iCloud, along with their preferences. On restore, it downloads every item on the list from Cydia, and replaces the preference files so that all of your settings are restored. It’s remarkable how simple it is.

And while it’s true that other backup solutions do the same, iCloud is the real difference maker here. Since your device is already connected to iCloud, there’s no logging in, no setting up credentials, or anything like that. It automatically knows your device, and can restore to the device with a simple press of the restore button.

Although I really like this app, it does have some room for improvement; improvement in two areas, actually.

Area one: The interface. Simply put, it looks like something I could design in Microsoft Paint. It’s definitely not Apple-esque, and it looks almost questionably rudimentary. It might make you think, “Should I even store my stuff with this thing?”

Area two: Lack of options. It’s okay to be simple, but this is over-the-top simple. In fact, there’s no easy way to display what’s being backed up and restored.

One last gripe is that it can’t backup your paid apps and tweaks. I understand that this is due to the need for credentials, but it’s still a small gripe. As of now, it can only backup and restore free tweaks, but that’s just a minor gripe in the grand scheme of things.

Overall, OpenBackup is an excellent first release, and has plenty of promise for the future. Best of all, you can download it for free.

What do you think about OpenBackup? Don’t you think managing your tweaks with iCloud a major step in the right direction?

    Looks promising!

  • I’ve been using xBackup for months now, never fails me.

  • Downside- tweak relies on a dozen different programming pieces to work.. I didn’t install this one….

I like my jailbroken iphone 4 to run lean and clean..

    • Harrison

Agreed! As Xbackup is the same way-maybe it’s just the way these backup apps work.

don’t need it. i’ve gone back & forth so many times i can do it in my sleep haha

  • xBackup is good. I have Pkgbackup too. I”ll try this. Thanks for the post.

  • Ive bee usingPKGbackup for a while Owens let me tell you I had some really horrible restores where I miss backed up my device ad had to install everything I had one by one but now that I knw how to use PKGBackup I’ll never give it up for anything but hey trying new backup apps doesn’t hurt ether 🙂

  • It looks like a cute tool but i guess that Xbackup is the best! Only 1.5$ but it worth it, IDB – please try Xbackup 🙂

  • I bought PKGbackup before few months and I have to say that is the worst tool that I ever meat!
It cost me 7$ and it’s didn’t work at all… It’s really annoying that in the end of all of my restores I can’t back my tweaks and jailbreak apps, and it’s my favorite hobby, accept playing BF3.

    • Next time use Xbackup

      • it’s really worth the 1.5$?
I just don’t want to spend my money about something that doesn’t work at all.

      • Believe me that it worth the money! it’s only 1.5$ and it works like a charm.
In the latest version the developer added so many features that it also saves your icon state/folder state/tweaks settings etc…

        watch some demos on youtube.

  • Wow. Used OpenBackup to back up my packages on iOS 5, then updated and jailbroke iOS 5.0.1 and launched Openbackup again and restored all the packages, then it told me to reboot. I did the usual process, but my iPhone won’t get past the pineapple logo, it just hangs….

Don’t know what’s up with it as I’ve used redsn0w multiple times before, so I assume it must be OpenBackup.

    Anyone know what’s happening?

Yes; as you said it: this app looks very childish and it is very limited but it does the job. Maybe with future updates it might get better. Right now, it is not for me.

I am a die hard fan of PkgBackup, I’ve been using it for almost 2 years now. The problems that I’ve had with it were resolved within hours with the developer, the backup options are the best and most complete of all the backup tools out there and are simple to use. For these reasons, there is no better backup tool than PkgBackup. xBackup is also a good backup tool but it doesn’t have the options of PkgBackup.

This sounds great. I’ll check it out now.

  • I’ve installed it, but it always crashes when I open it.

If I restore my iDevice and Before restoring I did a Backup with iCloud and Saved all of my Free Tweaks, Should it now download my tweaks or because i did a restore, I will need to JailBreak and install cydia, then only i can restore my Tweaks? pls answer ASAP thanks 🙂

  • you have to test iBye. Way bEyond…

  • This didn’t work for me. I backed up and then when I had to rejailbreak it wouldn’t restore anything 🙁

Since PKGBackup uses contacts, shouldn’t it also go to iCloud?

  • Steve Rand

LOL… “instuctions” Could do with a spell-check too!

  • but xbackup is free??? Just downloaded it! There are 3 different one’s to download.

  • Why is the ‘BigBoss’ version a paid app while the ‘xSelize’ free???

    • Harrison

Isn’t xSellize a cracked app repo?

    • Because one is cracked. Witch means that they have stolen the code, modified it to do stuff you have no idea about, and then spread it to the public.

Cracked apps often have more problems than original.

  • wow, just realised this is a pirate version… Going to buy the BigBoss version

  • does is backup cracked packages/tweaks ? and which one should i use now, which is better: PKGBackup, xBackup or now OpenBackup? (

  • Scott Bowman

Can someone please help? Has anyone else experienced this? The app keeps crashing on me when I use the iCloud feature. It backs up for a while and then eventually takes me to the springboard. When I disable the iCloud feature, it works normally. Anyone?

  • can it backup cracked apps???

  • is it possible to backup with OpenBackup on my iphone 4 and then restore it to my another iphone 3gs? Will this work in some way?

  • YoniS

hey i used Openbackup and it crashed my Cydia and since then i can even open my Cydia, is there anyway you can help me fix it please ? i tried everything for many hours but nothing worked

  • ManWithPlan

If I have my files saved to iCloud, how do i get them out later because there is no jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3

  • Deborah Howard Young

Imstalled and used to backup cydia apps. Had to do a restore, rejailbreak, reinstall Openbackup and guess what? It did NOT reinstall my backedup Cydia apps tho it had said it backed them up! Thumbs DOWN!

  • Nick Bro

Free tweaks is quite useless when all my valuable ones are paid..

  • Ikhlaas Miroune
