The popular SemiTether jailbreak was updated to v0.9.1 this morning, and it’s quite the update.

Working with Saurik, the team was able to fully incorporate the new mobile substrate, which allowed them to get rid of the daemon patching and restarting.

Mobile substrate now does all of the heavy lifting when it comes to the SemiTether. There’s even an option to patch Safari to work in non-jailbreak mode now.

Perhaps most importantly, the new version of SemiTether will protect your iOS 5 Notification Center plugins…

Along with that much needed feature, the team also says that they are looking into patching Mail, and working with the developers of MyWi and AppSync.

Per BigBoss here are is the summary of changes:

1) Much more stable with new mobile substrate
2) Can patch safari so it works in the non-jailbreak reboot mode
3) App to monitor the status of your semitether and reapply. Check after Cydia installs.

The team states that this update will certainly address the “flakiness” of the previous versions of SemiTether, but to keep in mind that this is still a beta package, and a complete rewrite of mobile substrate.

If you haven’t seen the video that we created that shows how to SemiTether jailbreak your device, then check it out below:

Have you used SemiTether? What do you think about it?

  • someone

the idea of booting tethered very problematic. It is still not successful100% all the time… problems happen. Wonder when the untethered one is coming out…at least have to do that DFU thing only once…. =S

  • Alex

    SAM isn’t compatible. πŸ™

  • Jarbarator

Does it fix 3g/data issue which was the reason i had to remove semi-tether earlier version and do without it?

  • angelo

i got stuck at the apple logo after boot tether… can anyone help me to fix my iphone ?

    • angelo

sorry forgot to mention.. i mean i got stuck after is try to reboot with boot tether.. now my i4 just show me an apple logo but it still can connect with itunes/ifunbox.. please help me…

      • njk

You just use redsnow and just boot tether option… You might have to do this twice. Ignore the “your device has to be off” and just do it. worked for me

      • Put ur iPhone into DFU mode and “Boot Tether” with redsn0w … If u can’t put it into dfu mode then download RECBOOT n it will do it for you

      • Put ur iPhone into DFU mode and “Boot Tether” with redsn0w … If u can’t put it into dfu mode then download RECBOOT n it will do it for u

    • George

You have appsync installed most probably

      • angelo

isn’t is delete appsync and instalous automatically when i installed semitether ? how can i delete appsync manually ?

  • njk

why the hell did it delete installous and appsync while installing this ?

    • Zack

      wow really?!?!?

      • njk

Is this sarcasm ? I understand Saurik doesn’t like us using it, but there’s no reason to delete it. People do whatever they want on their phones…

    • Gabeapp

its because appsync is a core file replacement and wont run unless u r in a jailbroken state and it causes ur device not to boot up properly like the apple logo stays but u can still sync with itunes

      • njk

Okay, thanks. Let’s wait for the untether all together…

    • Xepptizz

You’d know why it doesn’t work if you’d read the article

  • Rey

I dont see the point of semitether. If u cant use cydia better not to jailbreak then. Pointless

    • Alex

You’re in a desert. Your phone died. You try turning it on, but it’s stuck at the Apple logo! Oh, right! It’s on a tethered jailbreak, darnit!

      • DebTym

you’re phone died already, there’s no point turning it on.hehe

      • Alex

        Let’s say it crashed. πŸ˜›

      • Rey

        So dont jailbreak it.

      • tomdotcom

Or let’s say you had a solar charger… FTW!

  • ron

can you use mywifi with semi teethered……..

  • Alon

is it normal that it tells me that it is gonna delete my installous, appsync 5 and quick open… ?????
    please help!

    • Alex

      Oh, are you serious?

  • Works about as well as iTunes Match πŸ™‚

  • angelo

@njk i’ve done that maybe around 5-6x times but still i cannot pass trough the apple logo.. and the assistive touch became small as if it was only 1/4 screen active..

    • njk

try the reset, you hold power and home for 1 minute. If it does work, you might have to restore your device… If it doesn’t, try to rejailbreak. I know it’s hella not good, but from that you can then put in dfu, restore and rejailbreak. Good luck, man

  • Adam

I updated but the badge is still on my cydia icon, the update is still in changes and won’t go even if I run the update again, anyone else getting this?

  • Geez guys it’s simple.

AppSync & MyWi don’t work with Semi Tether. Maybe next week will update.

Only work around is install App Sync without Semi then sync all your apps. Then install semi which removes App Sync, but your apps will still work.

  • Kelvin

AppSync has already been updated (couple of days ago, actually)to use mobile substrate instead of hard-patching system files.

Weird that the dev for semitether hasn’t noticed that. :/

  • Semi can work with AppSync since the update but you need to install AppSync from another source and not from the hackulo. then it will work perfect, just checked it right now.

    • nick

ahh good to know! think I’ll semi tether now. I jus couldn’t lose my appsync & installous lol

    • Bruno

What’s the working source? to install Appsync?
and what about installous, have you tried to install it too?

      • the working source is

  • Dan

screw that, tether works just fine so I’m gonna wait it out till untethered.

    • Why the heck? you can still use untethered and install along the semi, this will give you the option to boot your device if something happens untill you get home or near a computer and run the Just boot again…

Actualy, it saves me today while my iPhone got stucked and had to do hard reset. this happend to me while i was at work and save my ass.

There is no logical reason of not installing it.

      • Dan

actually, with semi-tether I found out that I cannot do a respring (which I find useful).

Last time I had to reinstall mobile substrate so everything would work again. I’ve been on tethered since OS5 came out and my phone has not crashed once, so I’ll just avoid the hassle and wait.

  • sami

also i discovered some thing with out installing semitether do you now you can reboot your iPhone 4 ,3gs just by installing 2 cydia packages
1, mobile substrate 2, ulkit tools just install this tow packages and fell free to reboot your iPhone i tested in 5 phones its working without any problem except safari
what is the diffrence with semitether and my discovered thing
1 ,semitether you can not install installous and appsync and you can not install craked app
2, my discovered you can install installous and appsync you app when you reboot its working with out craked app .
please try it and give me comment

  • Alex

Would love to see semitether work as expected.

  • MALdito

    Still not untethered πŸ™ ….

    • Nope, but it’s allmost…

    • Guest

That’s why it’s called SemiTether. Comex is working on the bugs.

      • Comex is working at apple last time i checked πŸ˜€

  • Tony

ok…. after the reboot, my safari works fine!
    cydia doens’t though…

    • dvs

you need to do a tethered reboot to get your fully functional jailbreak working again!

      • Guest

I believe Tony may know that, just mentioning that they fixed the safari issue…..

  • 181

Guys, if I tethered jail brake my phone, will I be able to run an untethered once it’s available? … And would there be any issues or concerns about doing that if I can? ….. Thanks in advance!

    • Whizpopthat

Yes, it is possible to used the untethered jailbreak once it’s available. It’s just like as if you were to restore your phone to a normal iOS 5 Firmware (stock), there would be no longer a jailbreak. Once untethered is out, you can just choose to do an untethered jailbreak once they release the tool.

  • J-

  • Kelvin

Now working with installous and appsync.

  • Whizpopthat

All in all, SemiTether is an awesome way to stay connected to your mobile phone while on the road in case it dies or reboots. I experienced my phone last night dying and plugged it back in and I still was connected to the world minus the jailbreak. Soon as I got home DFU, Boot tethered & I was back again. I think we should all be appreciating the works of BigBoss and Saurik as they have helped the jailbreak community very much so by fixing mobile substrate & SemiTether.

Stop crying out loud! It’s your choice to opt for semi or no Jailbreaks. No one points a gun at you to semi-tethered your iphone. Both BigBoss and Saurik are doing a great job and should appreciate their efforts.

for those who can’t wait for untethered JB!

  • Stango

    • Bigal

Read the instructions goon .. U can still use ur stolen apps ect it’s only if u need to restart the iPhone u will lose jailbreak stuff. But the semi tether at least let’s u restart the phone untill u get back to ur computer … Well done big boss and the others working on this a great alternative till the full untethered is out πŸ™‚

      • Stango

See my comments down below because it applies your ass also.

  • Stango

    • CO

Your pissed off because your waiting for someone to do spend time and their efforts doing you a favor? Figure it out yourself or be quiet.

Thanks developers for all your work. Most of us appreciate the fact that were to dumb to figure out how to jailbreak our own devices. Then there are the really dumb one who think you somehow woe them something.

      • Stango

It should be noted that, the nerds that write the blogs that criticize Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and their development team are the same ones that create these JB software. There is no reason they should not be subject to the same criticism when their software falls short, is difficult to use or misses the mark. With that being said you and @Binary-Stalker should stop sucking the d*cks of these home developers, move out of your parents basement and get a job. Especially, since you are so damn smart and know everything. SMDH

  • Binary-Stalker

Stango, fuck off. This is a different team working on it, and it’s sufficient until then. If you think it’s a waste of time, look at it from a different viewpoint.

    • Stango

See my comments above JACK ASS!

  • 181

Guys, I’f I tether my phone. When an untethered break comes out, and I jailbreak with that, will I lose all of the apps and tweaks I added from the tethered break? … Thanks in advance!

    • Dan

      no you won’t

  • vicislick6

Just installed it on an iPhone 8gb 3GS, very happy with it. I know it’s beta so something bad will happen, but at least I’ll still be able to use my phone feature, big deal!! Great job Big Boss and Saurik. And f*** all the ungrateful bastards out there. If you dont like it, go to Android f*** nuts!!!

Anyone else having this problem with semitether? I installed it on my ipt 4g ios5 jailbroken with redsnow, and now my wifi doesnt work(in jailbroken+safemode and semi-tethered modes) I can connect too wifi but there is no connectivity and apps like facebook, twitter, appstore, and safari+ any other internet apps wont work saying there’s no internet connection even when I have full wifi bars(3)

  • Bigdaddyg09

YES!!!! For years we have benefited from these Devs. hard work. Work for the love of it. NOT MONEY. And it PISSES me off to see people posting crybaby complaints. If you don’t like JB-ing. Then DON’T DO IT!! Simple. And let the rest of us that actually know what they are doing, Enjoy our iDevices, without your tissue cries. SHUT UP already.

  • Bigdaddyg09

Not for the one’s giving feedback of their actual issues. Just the ones crying for a rush to untethered. Just had to vent. Sorry

  • maximex

don’t work for my iphone 4

  • MooHamOinkBeef

FOR THOSE HAVING THE APPLE BOOT LOGO ON A TETHER BOOT WITH LATEST SEMI-TETHER DOWNLOADED: This happened to me the first 3 times i tried tether booting with this new semi-tether, after it began exploiting with Limerain, the iphone began normally turning on and the boot into the jailbroken state was being blocked. After the 3rd time i just decided to put the iphone in DFU mode without turning it off and it worked, as naturally the iphone is hard reset prior to the DFU mode initiative. This caused it it successfully boot Jailbroken. Enjoy πŸ™‚

  • Jbravo

I prefer stay on 4.3.3, been on ios 5, batt. life is horible, downgrade back to 4.3.3, and enjoy full untethered jb, plus nice batt. life.. Awesome huh…;)

  • John doe

Do you guys trying the semi teather know how much junk code your installing on your phone? And how it effects performance?

    • tomdotcom

I have to say, my iPhone 4 seems way slower after installing this. Let’s hope they roll out an update soon (or an untether).

Unlike some of the people above, I am not going to throw my toys out of the pram because the untether is taking a while. It’s obvious that they want to release it, it obvious that the devs are working on it and I am sure that as soon as it’s ready for release, they will do it. Semitether, whilst far from perfect is way better than a fully tethered JB. Respect to the devs.

  • emver

with the latest update of semitether as of nov1 i was able to install installous 4 and appsync 5 to my iphone4 running ios 5… πŸ™‚ so happy

  • JJ hitz

doesn’t seem to work with 3gs.. does it work for you

  • Will the semitethered work with 5.0.1?

  • brandon slaughter

i dont quite undersand what this is doing aside from disabling you from using safari and cydia. is there even a point of releasing a semiteathered jail break? just seems like a tease/display of progress in the battle. i just wish i saw this video before i invested a few hours of frustration in trying to find a way to use cydia on the new ios. cheers mate.. its a straight up answer which might just lessen the impaitent bloggers?

    • Brandon, Safari and Cydia (among other things) are only disabled after an untethered reboot. Without semi-tether, your device doesn’t boot AT ALL. For instance, if you don’t have your PC and your battery dies, or iOS crashes, you can still reboot and have basic functionality from your phone. When you boot tethered again, you regain complete functionality(including safari and cydia). That’s why it’s called a semi tether. You can reboot untethered and still have a mostly functional phone, where as normally on a tethered jail break you’d be stuck at an apple logo until you booted with reds now or Ibooty.

Hope that clears it up for you. Semi tether is by far the most useful thing you can have on a tethered jb.

  • Tyler Colon

i downloaded semitether on my my iphone 4s running ios 5.0.1 and now my computer wont detect my iphone and i cant reboot my iphone
