The iPod touch, with a “touch to home” feature. How obvious, when you think about it?

This new leaked photo of what is apparently an iPod touch is making waves around the Internet today due to its lack of a mechanical Home button.

Although it’s a bit different than the rumors that suggested that the Home button would go away completely, a capacitive touch sensitive button is certainly one step in said direction.

Of course Android phones have been doing this for quite some time now, but it’ll be interesting to see — assuming the photo is the real deal — if this feature will ever make it to the iPhone…

But don’t mark it down in stone just yet, as there are a few reasons to doubt whether the feature will even make it to the iPod touch line, let alone the iPhone.

The biggest reason for skepticism comes from the fact that the device is loaded with older firmware as you can discern from the blurry-cam shots, and the fact that the model numbers don’t exactly pan out to anything solid.

Aside from that, it’s also been noted that the photo was taken with a camera circa-2002, not that that really means anything.

Apple has been known to have multiple prototypes of different models of their products for testing. See the 64GB iPhone 4 for evidence of that.

What do you think? Would you like to see a capacitive touch sensitive Home button on the iPhone 5?

  • For some reason something doesn’t seem legit about this image. Mind you I can’t rule out the fact that maybe this was one of apple’s prototypes for the 4th gen iPod touch. I personally don’t think that Apple would load older software on their prototype models. I would expect for the demo/dev/testing software to come pre-loaded. Aside from that I’m not a big fan of a touch home button. I kinda like the way the iPod and iPhone look with a physical home button.

  • Spencer

I would certainly like this more then no home button at all.

  • to be honest look at the capacity of the ipod too did apple ever make 130gb ipods cos its showing that 1 at 128.5 capacity lol i know they dont read a full gb tho cos they read it as 1000mb instead of 1028mb which is the true size so i very much doubt this being a legit ipod of the future

    • Julian

Yea 🙂 Dosent look like the real thing. Apple has never made ipod touches that big.

    • Nate

First off, we know this is a prototype which implies it would have new features not yet seen on an iPod touch/iPhone and the true gigabyte is 1024mb, not 1028

  • XepptizZ

No i wouldn’t like it. I want atleast something to give me feedback when i press it if the screen goes black.

  • EazyB

touch home button would suck for accidentely hitting it, i like the push button as it is

    • Lucas K.

My thoughts exactly. I’d be afraid to hit it in my pocket or something or while just holding it and close an app if my finger skimmed across it.

  • Also seems like touch home button would suck for putting device into dfu mode or recovery mode given that software needs to load in order to accept input from a touch device. I agree with Spencer, a touch home button would be better than no home button at all.

  • Twited21

Yeh I agree this pick dont look like a leap forward for apple products tell you what would be great in the iPod a flash and better battery life

  • XepptizZ

I want a dieselpowered iphone, dual exhausts.

From two headphone slots on the back

  • Ernesto Castellanos

Fake… Because firmware 4.2.1 only works with the hardware of current iPhones/iPods… It would be stupid to have the same name for a firmware that works for currents models. It’s like naming two of your kids the same…

I have a friend who has two sons with the same last and first names.

So easy to fake a picture like that, I don’t believe it at all. Show us a video.

Well what makes it look REALLY fake is the huge font of the iPod text. It’s also closer to the apple than usual and the text below is way too close to the bottom.
The only good thing about this would be a decreased number of failing home buttons, but then again I don’t think it’s that widespread problem. I honestly think this would suck big time. The tactile feedback of the current home button feels really nice. And it’d probably be way too sensitive. I’d even rather they remove the home button than put this sucker in iDevices. Conclusion: Hopefully and very likely a fake.

OMG someone please delete the dupes. It said every time it couldn’t be published, please check the comment and now I see them all posted. Hopefully someone fixes that, really annoying.

i think that its a screen protector that covers the button.. Look closely at the image there appears to be a bubble (ligheter area) where the button would be on iPods.
