‘DreamBoard’ Brings Advanced Theming to the iPhone

Do you feel like WinterBoard is getting a bit long in the tooth? Tired of its limitations?

Perhaps this new jailbreak app might pique your interest then. It’s called DreamBoard, and it promises to bring advanced theming to your iPhone.

Those are pretty big promises, especially considering how the mighty WinterBoard has pretty much dominated iPhone theming over the last few years.

Can DreamBoard live up to its aspirations for greatness?

It’s certainly off to a fine start. Version 1.0 of the DreamBoard gives us a sneak peak of some of the promising things to come from this new theming app.

While it’s not totally stable yet, and it only works with a handful of devices, the ceiling is quite high for its potential.

First and foremost, the app is incredibly easy to use. Once it’s installed, all you do is open the app, swipe to the theme you wish to switch to, and tap ‘Apply’ to select your theme. It’ll then seamlessly switch to the them you selected.

That’s right, when I say seamless I really mean it; there are no reboots or resprings required whatsoever.

Another thing that I appreciate about DreamBoard is that it’s a completely self-contained app. This isn’t an app that relies on a lot of other prerequisites in order to accomplish its duties; it’s a big download coming in at around 12MB, but all of the functionality is built into the app itself.

This is apparent when you actually begin using your themes – a complimentary HTC-esque Android theme is included with the package.

The complimentary theme includes your standard fare Android-clock widget, and a Facebook widget. There’s also an option toggle weather based overlays, and a button that showcases all of your apps on one vertical scrolling screen.

The included theme isn’t going to shock or wow you, but it does lend a sneak-peak to the potential of DreamBoard.

For those wanting to make their own themes, there is a set of instructions contained within the DreamBoard section of Cydia. You’re probably going to be familiar with theming in general before venturing in that direction.

Considering that this is version 1.0 of DreamBoard you are destined to experience some springboard crashes. If you have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 running 4.1 or 4.2.1, and you can handle some slight instability, I recommend you give it a try; it’s free on Cydia.

    my phone just ended in an endless loop of springboard crashes. Had to restore with iTunes !!!

      Same thing happened with me but I put my iPod in dfu mode by holding the home+power button and then it worked fine.

    I removed it, and tried reinstalling the theme and winterboard, for no avail.

    I don’t use WinterBoard because I can an obvious degradation in my iPhone 4′s performance. Can anyone who’s tried DreamBoard speak to whether they’ve seen a performance hit or not? Thanks

    It’ll be hard to take off since winter board is not only an application for themes. It let’s you bring in other tweaks as well.

    This is really cool! However, I installed it and it crashed 7 times (literally) in 5 minutes. It’s quite unusable. If it could get a lot more stable it could be awesome!

    What part of the post you guys dont understand? Its a new release, work in progress, free, and more themes are coming later. This is a new platform for theming for those wanting an alternative to winterboard. Pls report bugs instead of whining

      That’s all true and all, but I consder crashing to be a pretty big bug :p or are you implying they should send the error log to the devs? That would make sense I guess. And I also want an alternative to winterboard :(

    guys i think what he means by OS crash is when the ipod’s screen turns white, it shuts off and then reboots. This happened to me when i tried to use dreamboard.

    Don’t get too excited by the way, guys. As ive noticed, wyndwarrior never sticks with one project for very long, so the bugs are probably here to stay ):

    It looks pretty and has potential, but it crashes constantly. Once it’s more stable, I will try it again. I really like the concept.

    What the f*** is wrong with all these guys around insulting others and talking about Android on iDB?? If we’d want Android phone we’d have it, but since we’re smart we have iPhone. Just get out of iDB if you want to advertise Android around here, noone’s going to switch to android if he’s visiting this site. -_-

    I was also facing same problem after installing DreamBoard on 3GS. Tried above steps for long time.. didnt succeed. Later I install iphone explorer ver 2.1, Kept it running with Itunes.. as Itunes detected my iphone i immediately.. browser iphone with Iphone explorer… and deleted Dreamboard folder from Apps.
    from the Springboard (it shows complete black only with status bar,) Open Multitasking bar, start cydia. Remove Dreamboard. Respire Springboard…

    Later everything working fine.
    No Need to Factory RESTORE…

    This is just useless right now. Basically, get it only if you want a perpetual boot machine. I didn’t even apply a theme, just went in to view the theme then tried the Edit mode and blammo! Boot city.

    Srsly, some testing might have done this app a world of good.

    Great potential but 1.0 is extremely unstable, and the 1.0-1 update that was released today renedered the app completely useless….I have nothing but respect for WyndWarrior and he has done some great work for the iPhone, but he really should have done a better job testing this and getting it working before releasing it to the public. It is nowhere near ready.

    As stayed in the article, this app has potential. It is unique and given time and a good amount of tweaking could become a major player.

    Could anyone update why the only theme (Dreamboard had) is removed & left us with an icon only of Dreamboard on our springboard with nothing to do with it…

    I think this is going to be a great app if the dev sticks with it and makes more stable. Because I know some people that like certain themes but feels like they are to complicated and time consuming. This can fill that void.

        Yeah i downloaded it and then there’s no different themes, swiping does nothing. Clicking the app just makes it revert back to the usual theme.

    I could not use the thing at all on my 3gs, it would not load, it just shows a splash screen with usage instructions, when I swipe, it crashes. Crapware for now.

    Just downloaded this for $2.99 and i’m having the exact same problem as you guys… App opens and when I try and swipe the screen it just takes me back to the springboard… There had better be an update for this pretty damn soon or i’ve wasted my money!!

      same here paid for the flippn thing i liked the ol cydia with the free dreamboard switch it was a dream come true now its a gallon of gas wasted…….they will be hearing more of this if its not fixed soon

    I didn’t have to pay for it? I downloaded it like seriouslly 3 mins after it was realeased and about crapped myself due to how awesome the HTC Endroid pretheme was. And I remember think ing to myself “OMG!!! UPDATE!!! YESSSS!!!!!” And then…nothing. Nothing at all. It got rid of the theme and everything. I was so upset. Can anyone tell me what happened? Or a known fix? Possibly a downgrade? Please help!!!

    Downing 7 $ on a file browser app I was able to fix it though I fell off the horse soany times I would have given up until it worked after one last reboot. There is a do it yourself fix but if he’s working on it then it’s now worth the time I put into it nor the money I paid for it. Sorry guy but I don’t like fixing apps I had to sign up for paypal just to get that was previously free. Highly illogical everyone. And u too author.
