150 young developers have a chance to attend WWDC 2012 free of charge

If you didn't get the memo or can't afford forking $1,599 for this year's WWDC conference, but are a full- or part-time student over the age of thirteen, Apple's got you covered. The company said it will offer 150 students a chance to win scholarships for WWDC 2012, which includes a free of charge ticket to all conference sessions.

The company will judge applicants on "technical ability, creativity of ideas expressed in products or projects, prior WWDC attendance, as well as technical and work experience". If there is a tie, the most creative applicant has an edge, Apple noted...

The 2012 Apple Design Awards nominations now open, get your apps ready

As Apple announced this morning that it will hold its annual WWDC conference from June 11-15 at San Francisco's Moscone Center, they also revealed details about this year's Apple Design Awards. The prestigious award recognizes the best of the best in iOS and Mac app design, innovation and technology adoption.

Developers who intend to have their work included for this year's Apple Design Awards consideration are required to submit their apps by May 1 through Apple’s developer portal. However, even if you don’t submit your app, Apple could still award your work in one of the categories...

Confirming speculation, Apple just announced via a press release that its annual developer conference will run this year from June 11 through June 15 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, a week after this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo show. Tickets are now on sale, available from $1,599 for conference passes.

If history is anything to go by, WWDC 2012 will sell out in a matter of hours. If you're planning on attending the conference, better get your tickets right now, right here.

Unlike previous WWDCs, however, this time around Apple is mandating that attendees with conference passes be members of one of their developer programs...

WWDC 2012 to take place June 11-15?

Apple's annual pilgrimage for developers - the World Wide Developers Conference traditionally held in San Francisco's Moscone West - is approaching fast, but club Cupertino is still mum on exact dates.

As Moscone West gets booked months in advance, a quick trip to their online event calendar shows a five-day slot for a "corporate meeting" on Levels 1-3 scheduled to run between June 11-15. This is likely your WWDC 2012 date.

Apple's conference typically takes place mid-June and there's no other corporate meeting set for July. However, plenty of unused slots are still available for the month of July so take this one with a grain of salt as Apple could still book the venue some time in July rather than June...

iOS 5 Beta 1 Tethered Jailbreak Now Available

RedSn0w, the popular jailbreak tool by the Dev Team, has been updated with support for a tethered jailbreak on the iOS 5 developer beta. It's been less than a week since Apple got iOS 5 Beta 1 into the hands of developers at WWDC and across the world, and a tethered jailbreak is already available.

The news was announced by Dev Team frontman, MuscleNerd, and version 0.9.8.b1 of RedSn0w is now available to download for those with access to the iOS 5 beta. To get the iOS 5 beta legally, you must have a registered developer account with Apple.

Apple Owes the Jailbreak Community an Apology

The relationship between Apple and the jailbreak community has always been an interesting one. Ever since the first, public iPhone jailbreak was displayed in 2007, Apple and jailbreakers have been fighting in a secret, underground war. Fast forward to 2011, and you can do a lot more with a jailbroken iPhone than just add custom ringtones.

On Monday, Apple unveiled iOS 5. Version 5 was called Apple's most "revolutionary" iOS release to date. Oddly enough, many features that have been in the jailbreak community for years are now present in iOS 5. In fact, Apple has borrowed (some would say stolen) ideas from jailbreak developers for years, and iOS 5 is the most current, blatant example.

Apple, you owe the jailbreak community an apology.

Nuance Voice Integration Not Currently in iOS 5, But There’s Still Hope

Apple unveiled a truckload of iOS 5 features at WWDC on Monday, but one major thing was missing: Nuance voice integration. There was a strong series of rumors leading right up to the keynote that claimed iOS 5 would boast huge improvements in voice integration.

Unfortunately, no voice-related features were previewed during Monday's keynote, and the first iOS 5 developer beta has no voice additions to speak of.

Has Apple abandoned their partnership with Nuance in iOS? Or will we still see deeper voice integration in iOS 5 before it's released to the public in the next few months?

Apple Didn’t Tell Carriers About iMessage, Watch Out SMS?

Apple's wireless carrier partners were apparently just as surprised as we were when Apple unveiled its new messaging client, iMessage, at yesterday's WWDC keynote. Reportedly, Apple didn't bother to give carriers a heads up that they were introducing a new, media-rich messaging client before the actual presentation to the public.

Wireless carriers are the ones that will actually be handling the transfer of messages/photos/videos in iMessage over 3G. Apple demonstrated its classic attitude by not even bothering to give carriers a heads up about iMessage. What Apple wants, Apple gets.

iCloud Does Not Play Nicely With Verizon CDMA iPhone 4

We've all gotten used to Verizon arriving late to the party, and despite finally handing over the iPhone in February, Apple is still finding ways in which it can keep Verizon's customers waiting. Next up is iCloud, which doesn't play nicely with the CDMA iPhone built for the Verizon network.

During his announcement at WWDC yesterday, Steve Jobs said that some iCloud features were now in beta, including the ability to sync content among your devices, and download previous purchases. However, in order to enjoy these features, you need iOS 4.3.3 – a release not currently available for the Verizon iPhone...

WWDC 2011 Keynote in 2 Minutes

Did you miss Monday's keynote where Apple unveiled Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud? If you don't have time to watch the 2 hour keynote, this short 2-minute video will go over all the major points.

Of course this clip can't replicate the energy and excitement that go into the presentations and the demos...

WWDC 2011 As a Musical

You can file this under the creative and ridiculous categories. Just in case you haven't gotten enough of Apple's WWDC keynote on Monday, you can now watch "WWDC 2011: The Musical." We know, sounds like a dream come true.

It may sound like the worst 4 minutes of your life, but the guys that put this funny video together are actually quite entertaining. Check it out after the break...

Mobile Safari Gets Private Browsing Mode in iOS 5

Since Apple dropped the first beta release of iOS 5 yesterday, those of us with access to the firmware have been keen to play around with it and discover those "200 new features" that weren't quite big enough to get a mention at the WWDC keynote yesterday.

In addition to customizable keyboard shortcuts, one feature you may not have noticed is the 'Private Browsing' mode within mobile Safari...
