Unlock

Is Geohot Working on Unlocking Baseband 05.12.01 for iPhone 3.1.3?

Did Geohot change his mind? A few weeks ago he said that he would not work on OS 3.1.3 but what he tweeted yesterday suggests otherwise.

Apparently Musclenerd and Geohot are talking to each other to figure out whether his exploit is the same as the one discovered by Sherriff a few days ago.

This unlock would sure be a life saver to the many iPhone owners who "accidentally" updated their device to 3.1.3.

iPhone 3.1.3 Baseband 05.12.01 Unlock On Its Way?

Some good news for those of you who accidentally updated their iPhone to 3.1.3 and are now stuck without being able to unlock or downgrade.

Sherif Ashim announced today on Twitter that he successfully crashed the 05.12.01 baseband, which really is step 1 in finding an exploit to unlock it. Later on, MuscleNerd confirmed that it was a totally legit find.

What does this mean? Well, this means that at the time you're reading this, the Dev Team is probably working on turning this exploit into an iPhone 3.1.3 unlock.

iPhone OS 4.0 is still months away so I wouldn't be surprised if the Dev Team released this 3.1.3 unlock instead of saving it for 4.0.

Early updaters rejoice! An iPhone unlock for baseband 05.12.01 is on its way!

How to Unlock iPhone 3.1.3

This guide and tutorial will show you how to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 using UltraSn0w or BlackSn0w, depending on your iPhone baseband.

The first step is to jailbreak your iPhone 3.1.3, either with RedSn0w or with PwnageTool. Note that PwnageTool is the preferred method as it helps preserve the baseband.

You can use UltraSn0w to unlock these basebands:

04.26.08 05.11.07 05.12.01 05.13.04

To find out what your baseband is, go to Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware.

How to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 with UltraSn0w Launch Cydia. Add the following source to Cydia repo666.ultrasn0w.com (note there is a “0″ in sn0w, not an “o”). After installing this source in Cydia, search for “ultraSn0w”. Install UltraSn0w and reboot your iPhone. How to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 with BlackSn0w Launch Cydia. Add the following source: http://blackra1n.com. After installing this source in Cydia, search for "BlackSn0w". Install BlackSn0w and reboot your iPhone.

Your iPhone should now be unlocked. If you have questions or comments on how to unlock iPhone firmware 3.1.3, please leave a comment.

Jailbreak & Unlock iPhone 3.1.3 with Sn0wBreeze? No, Thank You

The almighty Sn0wBreeze has been recently updated to version 1.4 and although it claims to help jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3.1.3, I recommend to stay away from this tool.

The problem with Sn0wBreeze is that only a very small amount of people actually get it to work. It's such a small amount that I've come to think that it's the creator himself who leaves comments here and there to make people believe Sn0wBreeze actually works.

In a Sn0wBreeze tutorial I wrote about a week ago, only one commenter got it to actually work, but then he had to face many other issues:

I still get a lot of glitches when installing third party apps as well as the apps from the App Store. Also, I’m getting a lot of problems with Cydia. The Big Boss Repo won’t show up no matter how many times I uninstall and reinstall, still the same problem.

Can Sn0wBreeze jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3.1.3? Maybe. Do I recommend it? No. MuscleNerd goes as far as suggesting to stay away from it.

For those of you daredevils who'd still want to give a shot at jailbreaking and unlocking with Sn0wBreeze, you will first have to download version 1.4 and look at the Sn0wBreeze guide I wrote (steps are exactly the same).

Have you tried Sn0wBreeze? Have you had it to work? Please let us know in the comments.

RedSn0w 0.9: iPhone 3.1.2 Jailbreak Available

RedSn0w 0.9 is officially out of beta and is now available to everyone who wants to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2. RedSn0w had been in beta testing for a couple of weeks now and the Dev Team worked on fixing the bugs. Apparently, this release is now completely bulletproof.

This release of RedSn0w supports all iPhone and iPod Touch models (still a tethered-only JB for late-model devices though) and runs fine on Windows and Mac OSX.

At first, this version of RedSn0w was supposed to include the IPCC tethering hack but it seems it was causing issues so it was removed at the last minute.

I was a little confused about the baseband situation so I asked MuscleNerd directly. Here is what he has to say:

redsn0w itself doesn't update the firmware, or the baseband. It just works with whatever firmware is there and ignores the baseband. redsn0w happens to know about both 3.0 and 3.1.2 firmwares, so it can jailbreak (or add logos, etc) to either.

ultrasn0w right now is only for baseband 04.26. If you have baseband 04.26 on 3.0 (which you normally would at that FW version), then that works fine for ultrasn0w. If you have baseband 04.26 on 3.1.2 (you got there through a custom IPSW), then that works fine for ultrasn0w too. And in both cases, redsn0w can be used to jailbreak, get Cydia, and install ultrasn0w.

However if you somehow have baseband 05.11 on firmware 3.0 (you went up to 3.1.2 then tried to come back down), ultrasn0w won't do the unlock, even though redsn0w will work fine. And if you have baseband 05.11 on firmware 3.1.2 (you did a stock apple restore/update), then ultrasn0w won't work there either.

I recently wrote a tutorial on how to use RedSn0w to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2. Check it out if you want to jailbreak your iPhone using RedSn0w, which you can get from our iPhone downloads page.

RedSn0w 0.9 iPhone Jailbreak Released

Just a few hours ago, MuscleNerd tweeted about the release of the long-awaited RedSn0w jailbreak for iPhone 3.1.2. This version of RedSn0w is actually a beta version (redsn0w 0.9beta3) but it seems very stable from what I hear.

RedSn0w is a safer alternative to BlackRa1n to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone running OS 3.1.2.

Since it's still a beta version, it hasn't been posted on the Dev Team blog yet but more info about RedSn0w 0.9 beta 3 can be found here. If you're too lazy to read the full article, here is a rundown of the most important points:

RedSn0w 0.9 will jailbreak all iPhones and iPod Touch (except iPod Touch 3G) It will jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.2 It will only unlock the iPhone 2G (install UltraSn0w from Cydia for iPhone 3G and 3GS) RedSn0w will modify your current filesystem, so your existing baseband, data and applications should remain intact If you have a late-model iPhone 3GS or an iPod touch 2G whose serial number begins with “MC”, you can use redsn0w to jailbreak but you are currently restricted to “tethered” rebooting

For full details about RedSn0w 0.9 beta 3, please read the Dev Team's article about it.

I just wrote a tutorial on how to use RedSn0w to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.2. Make sure to check it out if you're not sure how to use RedSn0w. In the meanwhile, you may download RedSn0w 0.9 beta 3 for Windows and Mac from our download page.

Everything You Need to Know About Jailbreaking And Unlocking Your New iPhone

If you just got a new iPhone for Christmas, then congratulations, you are going to love it. Next step now is to jailbreak your iPhone in order to release the full potential of it. If you're not sure what jailbreaking is, I suggest you read a bit more about it. As you will see, there are many reasons to jailbreak your iPhone.

Now if someone offered you an iPhone and you don't want to use it on an official carrier (like AT&T in the US), then you will have to unlock your iPhone. Unlocking is fairly easy, even for non techy people and there are very few risks of doing any damage.

Brand new to this whole jailbreaking and unlocking thing? I understand it might be a little confusing. I wrote an article about the difference between jailbreaking and unlocking that might help you understand both better, so feel free to check it out if want to learn more about it.

Let's get into it now. This article aims at giving a quick overview of possibilities for jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone. For both jailbreaking and unlocking, the method used depends on what iPhone model you have and what software (firmware) is currently installed on it. At this time, I will assume that your iPhone comes with firmware 3.1.2 preinstalled on it.

First things first. Before unlocking an iPhone, you first have to jailbreak it.

UltraSn0w iPhone Unlock Updated to Fix Missing Carrier Logo

The Dev Team updated UltraSn0w from 0.91 to 0.92 to fix the missing carrier logo. Those of you who unlocked using PwnageTool + UltraSn0w noticed the disappearance of the carrier logo. While this was just an "aesthetic bug", the core functionality of UltraSn0w (the unlock) was not altered in any way.

A short update was given on the Dev Team blog earlier today:

Today we released an ultrasn0w update that fixes an issue for those running firmware 3.1.2 with the 04.26 baseband.  That specific combination resulted in a missing carrier name in the upper left-hand corner of your home screen.  Today’s ultrasn0w update from 0.91 to 0.92 fixes that problem (which was an important issue for roaming). You should see the update available if you have http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com as a Cydia source.  Enjoy!

According to AIS, the carrier logo has been fixed for the following countries: USA, Thailand, Austria, Trinidad, Germany, China, Kuwait, Serbia, Poland, France, Nigeria, Egypt, Pakistan, Ireland, UK, Turkey, Sweden, Switzerland, Malaysia, Hungary, The Netherlands, Bahamas, Jamaica, India, Israel, Belgium, Canada, Portugal, Denmark, Costa Rica, Italy, Chile and Argentina.

How to Fix Wifi Connection Issues After Unlocking Your iPhone With BlackSn0w

Many people are experiencing various issues after unlocking their iPhone with BlackRa1n and BlackSn0w.

Here are some of the problems you may have encountered:

No 3G or Edge Can't connect to wifi Problems with YouTube No push notifications

There are 2 possible solutions for this.

The first fix is to reset your network settings. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. After resetting your settings, make sure to reboot your iPhone. It is very important to reboot or else, the changes won't take effect.

A few people told me on Twitter that this didn't work but resetting ALL the settings then rebooting did work. So try this if the first fix didn't work.

The second fix is pretty simple too but it does require you to have an Internet connection. From your iPhone, go to Cydia and add this new source http://cydia.iphoneil.net.

After adding this source, search for an app called Push Fix and install it. Reboot your iPhone and you should be good to go.

If the problems persist, I suggest taking more drastic measures by restoring your iPhone. I know, I know, restoring is not fun but it's always a good thing to do when nothing else works.

If you choose to restore your iPhone, make sure you set it up as a new phone. Do not "restore from backup" as this would bring back some of the bad settings that caused your issues in the first place.

If you tried all of these fixes and you're still experiencing issues, then I'm not sure what else to tell you.

If you found another fix, please feel free to leave a comment below.
