CoolStar updates APT, DPKG, and GNU for iOS 11, Cydia coming in future Electra beta

Electra quickly became one of the most popular ways to jailbreak iOS 11.0-.11.1.2, and while it hasn’t included Cydia since its initial release, that could all change very soon.

The primary reason we haven’t had Cydia on iOS 11 as of yet is that both it and its dependencies haven’t been updated to work on Apple’s latest operating system. On the other hand, CoolStar made significant strides in the right direction this week after upgrading APT, DPKG, and GNU with iOS 11 support.

Jailbreak update: a summary of current tools

In times gone by, jailbreaks would come in the form of one tool per firmware range. Whoever got there first would release, and that release would be the standard. As we've moved from secret tools to public exploits, developers are free to seize upon vulnerabilities as they become public and try to make a jailbreak out of them, resulting in multiple tools for the same firmware. These tools often have different advantages and limitations, and can become hard to differentiate. In this article, we'll do our best to summarise the current tools, as well as how they differ from the rest.

CoolStar launches a tenth beta of the Electra jailbreak tool for iOS 11.0-11.1.2

On Wednesday, CoolStar released the tenth beta of his Electra jailbreak tool for iOS 11.0-11.1.2. The new release incorporates a bevy of bug fixes with the intention of making the experience more stable for everyone.

Electra still doesn’t install Cydia because Saurik hasn’t updated it for iOS 11 just yet, but users can take advantage of SSH connectivity to install tweaks and extensions for personal enjoyment.

CoolStar’s Electra iOS 11.0-11.1.2 jailbreak tool gets significant improvements in beta 9

Not even 24 hours after the release of Electra beta 8-2, CoolStar pushed beta 9 of the iOS 11.0-11.1.2 jailbreak tool on Saturday with a slew of additional bug fixes and performance improvements.

Just like the LiberiOS tool that launched last year, Electra utilizes Ian Beer’s open-source tfp0 exploit to jailbreak supported devices. Notably, it doesn’t install Cydia because Saurik hasn’t updated it for iOS 11 just yet. Instead, users need to resort to SSH for installing extensions.
