List of Jailbreak Apps Compatible with the iPad

Spirit brought us the easiest and fastest jailbreak ever. Great! The only problem is that most of these jailbreak apps aren't compatible with the iPad just yet.

Some smart dude got the idea to create an editable list of jailbreak apps that work on the iPad. The list is on Google Docs so anyone can edit it. I'm not sure who started this but it sure is a good idea.

So far, about 70 apps have been tested, with more to come. You can find the list here. If you have tested a few jailbreak apps on your iPad, try to report the results by adding them to the list.

How to Make Your iPhone Apps Run in Full Screen Mode On Your iPad

iPhone applications that have not been optimized for iPad yet don't look so good on the iPad. Sure you have the option to blow up the iPhone apps by hitting the "2x" button, but the pexilization is so bad that it makes this feature almost useless.

For those of you who jailbroke your iPad with the newly released Spirit (see Spirit jailbreak tutorial), there is a solution that will allow you to blow up your apps to fit the full screen, without having the dirty pixelization.

I initially saw this on Remond Pie but the instructions didn't work at all for me. So I dug a bit more and I found something on ModMyI that perfectly worked for me.

Step 1: Download iPhoneBrowser and launch it. In Cydia, download Afc2Add and reboot your iPhone.

Step 2: Plug your iPad in and navigate to /var/mobile/Applications.

Step 3: Find the application you want to hack and search for the info.plist file in the app's main folder.

Step 4: Copy the info.plist file to your desktop.

Step 5: With a text editor such as TextWrangular (for Mac) or Plist Editor (for Windows), edit the info.plist file to add the following:

<key>UIDeviceFamily</key> <array> <integer>1</integer> <integer>2</integer> </array>

Step 6: Save the file and drop it back in its location in the app's main folder.

Step 7: Reboot your iPad.

I tried the following hack on several apps. I didn't work for many of them but it did work for a few like Tweetie, and I know it works for Facebook as well. I think it completely depends on how the app is designed. Graphic heavy apps don't seem to do well, whereas text oriented apps such as Tweetie do well.

How to Jailbreak Your iPhone or iPad With Spirit

Spirit has to be the easiest and quickest jailbreak ever. JailbreakMe was fast, but Spirit takes it to a whole new level. I'm not really sure a Spirit tutorial or guide is necessary because it is so simple...

Before thinking about jailbreaking your iDevice with Spirit, there are a few requirements that you need to know about. Please head over to this post I wrote earlier to read the "fine prints" and make sure you know exactly what you're doing.

I wrote this guide by jailbreaking my iPad using Spirit but the steps are exactly identical for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Steps are also identical whether you're on a Mac or PC.

Note that Spirit is a jailbreak for every device. It will NOT unlock your iPhone.

How to jailbreak your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad with Spirit

Step 1: Download Spirit from our download page.

Step 2: Make sure you have at least version 9 of iTunes.

Step 3: Back up your iPhone, iTouch or iPad in iTunes, just in case something goes wrong.

Step 4: Launch Spirit.

Step 5: Click "Jailbreak".

Step 6: Wait just a few seconds until you see this image:

Step 7: Your iPhone will reboot and you should have the Cydia icon on your springboard.

Congrats, you just jailbroke your iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad using Spirit.

Errors & Troubleshooting

Windows Vista or Windows 7 users may get the error c0000005.

To avoid this error, you have to run Spirit.exe in compatibility mode. To do so:

Right click on Spirit.exe and select Properties Select the compatibility tab Check the “Run this program in compatibility mode for” box and select Windows 98 / Windows ME

Jailbroken iPad 3G Sends SMS

Dev Team member MuscleNerd managed to send text messages from a jailbroken iPad 3G. According to MuscleNerd, The MobileSMS.app from the iPhone doesn't run properly on the iPad so he had to use raw command lines via Terminal.

Since the AT&T plan that comes with the iPad 3G doesn't allow to send SMS, MuscleNerd used a T-Mobile SIM card that he cut down into a MicroSIM.

This is just the beginning. I'm sure we'll see more and more of these hacks

iPad 3G Spirit Jailbreak Pictures & Video

In a tweet sent yesterday, MuscleNerd teased us with a couple pictures and a video showing an iPad 3G jailbroken with the long-awaited Spirit jailbreak.

Spirit, which was said to be released this past Friday has been delayed. There is no official release date yet but it shouldn't take more than a few days.

While waiting for Spirit, you can prepare your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad by saving your SHSH blobs.

Spirit Jailbreak for iPhone,iPad and iPod Touch Coming Tomorrow

A few weeks ago I was telling you about Spirit, a new userland jailbreak by Comex that would supposedly jailbreak all iPhones and iPod Touch 3.1.3, no matter what model, as well as the iPad 3.1.2.

After a month of painful wait, the official realease date finally came from Comex himself. When someone asked him on Twitter when we could expect his Spirit jailbreak to be released, Comex said "Friday".

It is pretty unclear what Spirit will look like. It was originally believed to be a browser-based jailbreak like jailbreakme.com but Chpwn confirmed a few hours ago that Spirit doesn't work out of a browser. He also made it clear that Spirit will work for the latest firmware of the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

That is indeed good news for some of us who "accidentally" updated to 3.1.3 and got stuck without a jailbreak. It's important to note that Spirit is a jailbreak only. It will not unlock your iPhone! There is no word about a 3.1.3 iPhone unlock and if I were you, I wouldn't hold my breath. I suspect we won't see a 3.1.3 unlock until iPhone OS 4 is released in a few weeks.

If you're going to be using Spirit for your iDevice, MuscleNerd recommended NOT to update iTunes to the latest 9.1.1 version. According to MuscleNerd, iTunes can detect Spirit and remove it, so make sure you stay away from this "update" button.

I just got my iPad and I was feeling really miserable without all my jailbreak apps. I'm glad I'm going to be able to take full advantage of this beautiful device as soon as I jailbreak it with Spirit.

iPad 3G Ships By May 7 In The US

It's now official, the iPad 3G will be ship in the US by May 7th, according to Apple's website. It's interesting to note that even though Apple hadn't been specific on a launch date back when they introduced the iPad, they did say it would launch 90 days after January 27. In short, they're late, but not really...

I know I'm not buying an iPad 3G. Why would I pay extra for 3G when I can simply tether my iPhone and share its 3G with my iPad? But at $130 more than the wifi-only version, I don't think it's a bad deal.

What I really like about it too is the flexibility of the 3G data plan. You choose the amount of data per month you want to buy (250MB at $14.99, or unlimited data at $29.99).

"Best of all, there’s no contract. So if you have a business trip or vacation approaching, just sign up for the month you’ll be traveling and cancel when you get back. You don’t need to visit a store to get 3G service. You can sign up, check your data usage, manage your account, or cancel your service — all from your iPad."

How to Turn Your iPad Into An iPad 3G

If you don't want to cough an extra $130 (+ $15 to $30/month) to get the 3G version of the iPad but still want to enjoy the freedom of 3G technology on the go, I have a quick and easy tip for you to turn your iPad into an iPad 3G.

In order to get your iPad work on 3G, you will need an iPad (duh!) and a jailbroken iPhone 3G or 3GS. The trick is pretty simple. You just need to download the MyWi app from Cydia. MyWi is a tethering app that allows you to turn your iPhone into a wireless hotspot.

I wrote about MyWi a couple of months ago here so I won't go too much into details but basically it creates a wifi hotspot so you can share your 3G with devices around you, including your iPad. My Twitter friend @LappyGirl tried it and confirms it's working great.

So here you go, you just got yourself an iPad 3G for the price of a standard iPad.

More Evidence Of iPad Jailbreak In The Wild

Yesterday I told you that GeoHot had found a jailbreak for the iPad. It seems he's not the only one as more proofs of an iPad jailbreak are surfacing.

This time, the leak comes from Comex, the developer behind the Spirit jailbreak. A few hours ago, Comex tweeted the image above showing MultiFl0w on the iPad.

In the meantime, ZodTTD posted a video by Chpwn showing an iPad running the N64 NES emulator for iPhone.

As usual, there is no ETA date but I believe this iPad jailbreak release is now imminent.

GeoHot Reveals BlackRa1n iPad Jailbreak

Things are going fast in the jailbreak world these days. One day after MuscleNerd announced the Dev Team had jailbroken iPhone OS 4, it's GeoHot turns to impress us with a jailbreak for the iPad.

Ealier today, GeoHot posted a tweet with a picture showing verbose mode running on his iPad. For info, verbose mode basically shows everything that your iPad is doing on bootup. It's a clear sign that the iPad has been jailbroken.

As if it wasn't clear enough, GeoHot posted a more straightforward picture on his blog minutes ago showing a jailbroken iPad with the BlackRa1n and Cydia icons.

When the picture was first posted on GeoHot's blog, it had a caption under it saying that "The new app will not be called blackra1n". This caption has since then been removed.

The name doesn't matter. Of course what really matters here is that GeoHot is once again the first to find a new jailbreak, this time for the iPad.

There is no estimated release date but if I had a guess, I'd say that this new iPad jailbreak should hit the streets pretty soon. It seems like multitasking might come to the iPad earlier than Steve Jobs would want to after all...

How to Turn Your iPhone Into An iPad Camera

It's too bad that a great device like the iPad doesn't have a camera. Fortunately, there's an app that will turn your iPhone into an iPad camera. It's not the perfect solution, but it should do the job...

All you need to use your iPhone as a camera for iPad is the Camera for iPad app. After installing the app on your iPad and iPhone, simply launch it on both devices and they will find each other via Bluetooth. Your iPad will then show what your iPhone camera is seeing.

Intuitive controls let you zoom with a pinch or rotate with a swipe. You can just tap the button to take a high resolution photo that is saved onto your iPad.

Camera for iPad isn't just for the iPad! You can connect an iPhone to an iPod Touch, or even connect one iPhone to another, and choose which is the sender and which is the receiver.

Camera for iPad is available from the App Store for $0.99. While I haven't personally tried the app, MichaelB who tipped me on this confirms it works like a charm.
